I've played with changing the default derailed train cleanup rule to 2 minutes or 5 or whatever, made no difference that I can see. Sometimes derailed trains blink out after a minute or so, leaving half the cars sitting behind with the yellow X over them. Sometimes those go away after a while, sometimes they don't. Sometimes they all stay forever, none of them disappear. Got a big collision with a couple dozen derailed cars and one or two at the end of the train that are not derailed, trying to couple onto those to clear the mainline usually derails them plus your engines.
