Clapham-Waterloo & Speyside Models by tlowthion4

South London Engineer
Here are some screenpics from two now abandonned routes.

Firstly, my Clapham-Waterloo layout (I'm hoping to revisit this as part of my South London Tramway Project)

Screen_033.jpg

Clapham Junction (Seen from the road Bridge at the SW end): Produced mainly with in-game scenerv, plus elements of FMA and Andi06 content.

A TFL Overground train passes along the viaduct from the West London Line
Screen_036.jpg

A Class 220(?) reskined to 'South West Trains' heading toward the station from Waterloo. Once the eurostar terminal opens for intercity trains I'm guessing this is what will run the Poole-Waterloo route.

Secondly, here is my Speyside Railway Route. Modelled by following the remaining groundworks of the Strathspey Railway visible on Google Maps, the railway represents a modern preserved steam railway however, it still serves the Spey Valley Distilleries and other Industries (Allowing for a mix of semaphore signals and old stock but new buildings and vehicles.)

These first images are from a section from Ballindalloch to Carron.
Ballindaloch1.jpg

Ballindalloch Junction. I felt that a branch to the mainline (Which runs from Aviemore to Craigallachie) could start here, serving the Avon Valley. The mainline has two platforms, plus a third terminus platform for local Avon line passenger trains. (visible at the back) There is also a boardwalk to a yard for the local services.

Screen_012.jpg

Blacksboat Station: A coaling post and goods station for local villages and farms.
Screen_016.jpg

Knockando Distillery. The Distillery has it's own yard, and a Station Halt (Gilbey's Cottages)
Screen_017.jpg

Knockando House Halt. This station serves a manor house so only delivery trains and early morning/evening services stop here. In summer months, special trains would also bring tourists to the halt, hence the improved platforms (Originally, the halt stations on Strathspey were made of wood and very short) The siding and coaling station are for a special Pullman train for the house)
Screen_020.jpg

Imperial Cottages; This represents a typical halt station on the route. Stations like this serve small local communities, such as Imperial Cottages which serve as staff accommodation for Knockando House

These second set of images represent a costal line from Garmouth to Buckie. They are more detailed than the original route, so I have only really completed the Portgordon area, however, i would like to build up to the Garmouth Bridge which Bendorsey has so brilliantly recreated.

Screen_023.jpg

Portgordon Harbour: A branch runs right up onto the breakwater for loading fish. Also features some boxwagons reskined in my Speyside Railway Livery

Screen_025.jpg

The Portgordon Distillery. A ficticious Distillery, malts sea whisky. The line from the harbour passes through the distillery.
Screen_026.jpg

The branch to the Distillery passes through a now dismantled yard.
Screen_027.jpg

The Parochial House, built out on marshy land by the coastal road
Screen_028.jpg

Portgordon Station. The Station features a second Terminus Platform for the Branchline to allow transfer of goods from the branch to the mainline. Fish is stored in the fish house.

A Local Train passing along the embankment beside the beach.

I'd like to work on the Spey Valley Railway Project again in the future, but I'm putting it on hold until I can figure out how to run multiple units on a single line successfully.

Anyway, hope you like these, and follow my progress on my South London Tramway Project.

Now, tlowthion1, is there any danger, if you're abandoning these routes, of sharing the incomplete work on the DLS?

I am a long way off getting the "Withered Arm" up to Waterloo, but I have been having nightmares about getting into the metropolis and I would love to see how you have tackled the dense city without a big frame rate hit.

Thanks!

one of the reasons I gave up i'm afraid. North of Clapham Junction Its just track and basic stations. The layout is a monster of signals though, but can almost support a realistic number of services. I think most people who have attempted this route have hit the problem that when they get to about wimbledon, the railway runs on viaducts, so more of the city is visible. Ideally what we need is a 'google rail-view' to make some big backdrops of the london horizon (I'm using streetview to get shop-fronts for my tram-line). It could be done with loads of photos from tall buildings, but i dont think this is an option.

a forced-perspective model? It came to me today whilst working. For film and TV sets, they sometimes use a model that changes in scale as it moves away from the camera. Model railway makers also sometimes use this trick. If you build the houses close to the line in full scale, then create some in half scale, 1/4 scale etc. This sytem (Which production designers call 'perspective blocks') is used a lot in animation sets, so that parts of the model can be changed, so you dont have to build loads of sets. If you're happy with content creation you could give that a go, or wait till I get to doing that sorta thing (may be a while i'm afraid, I'm just starting the section near wimbledon today.

tlowthion1,

I`m from the north-east of Scotland and I would have loved to have seen your Strathspey route completed, the screenshots you`ve posted look wonderful.

There were so many branch lines around this part of the world (now sadly closed), that to find one being modelled is very rare.

Hi there.

In the second picture of the first post in this thread, you have railway arches which is something I'm after for a suburban route. Would you be kind enough to let me know either the name, creator or KUID of the asset please?

I'm guessing it is from Medway Valley trains but if you could confirm this, I'd be very grateful.

Cheers.

Look for FMA, stacks of stuff...

Nice routes too. I tried something similar to Waterloo but had to give up because, as you noted, on embankments there is so much more scenery to put in and frame rates are badly hit.
Maybe some pictures put on blocks in gmax would do the trick?

Well, I think you are probably in a better position to work on it than I am! I live in London and have never been north of Edinburgh. This has proven one of the major problems with the Strathspey project; my work has come, as much as possible, from research and using Google Earth to try and guess the lay of the land, but without being there myself it is hard work, so the line really is quite ficticious and a little chocolate-boxish. I'm focusing now on my London-inspired projects for this reason; if I need a reference image i can just go there...

Long Absence

Sorry all, it's been a long time.
Firstly, i'm about to finally upgrade to 2010, so that might mean some radical re-jiggin of my routes.

I've also gone back to my model of the Strathspey Railway, since i've now learnt how to put Google-Earth maps into trains, and wanna try and make a good, long single-track layout. This means i can now completely reproduce the actual layout of the track, river, roads, forests etc. [Its pretty difficult stuff, requiring google earth, sketch-up pro v8, and Gmax, but if anyone wants a tutorial let me know.] I've re-made my version of Clapham Junction (from a google-earth map) but it's sooo complex i thought I'd leave that for a while.

The Strathspey Railway is now reaches from Broomhill Junction to Carron (about 27mi). This is mostly still in squared-paper grey, but I have done plenty of landscaping around the stations. (the inbetweeny-bits are mostly barley fields and pine forests so dont take too long to produce). I'm hoping to get to Aviemore (where the branch line meets the mainline) soon, so I can start setting up proper train schedules and see the whole thing running. I have found that using the schedule command in combination with some clever ATLS signals mean I can run many services simultaniously on the line: i'm hoping to run a tourist Pullman express service, local commuter trains (in opposite directions), a daily whisky train, coal trains, lumber trains, and supplies for the distilleries. I'm sure this sort of running would not be typical of a branchline of this sort, but I'd like to see a few more trains on the route as I travel along.

Will post some new images asap, the next time I have a play on the game.

London Waterloo Model

Hi all, right, I've set myself a new big project to try to re-create London Waterloo Station... impossible? Probably, but I'll give it a go.

Ideally I need some real architects plans of the station and platforms before I can take it into 3DSMax and get working. I have tried working from photos but if anyone knows where I can get some proper old architects plans of the building facades etc (including in books etc) that'd really help me out. Also, perhaps there will be some modern plans from 1993 when the international station was built?

If you are interrested, I'm intending to build the station as a modular allowing changes to things such as platform positions, shop frontage and station furniature; this will hopefully allow people to build Waterloo from different time periods, or to make a few non-realistic modifications...

Anyhoo, thats what i'm up to, hope you can help. Will be releasing more pics of my Speyside Railway soon as well.

Tomas

So why hasn't Speyside been released yet?

Alas, I lost the model! Epic computer failure, probably caused by trainz itself!
I'm looking into re-starting the Speyside line, but intend to make the route more geographically acurate, and to make my own content. I am currently doing some research into the individual stations and structures on the line, however, this is taking some time.

I am also looking into starting work on London Underground/DLR/Tram route, possibly the district line. Since I am based in London, it will be easier to research this.

Stay Tuned.
