Can TS2010 use more than one core? AMD Athlon64 x3

Updated to 49938 from 44088 and noticed after leaving a route going for a couple hours it will max out 1 core of my 3 core CPU.... Makes Trainz freeze almost completely. Anybody know a way to divide the load? Build 44088 didn't seem to act as badly, but almost. Any help or ideas much appreciated. I'd figured 2.9 GHz x3 would be enough but not if I can only utilize one of the cores

-Edit- Not sure if it's relevant, but I saved the session before shutting down Trains. Tried to re-open it and it crashed.

I found out last week on this forum that Trainz was not optimised for multi core use until TS2012. I run TS2010 on a quad core, but it only uses core 0. To me, this is reason enough to ugrade to TS2012, given that it is backward compatable to TS2010 content.

TS2010 uses both cores on mine;

Model: Dell DXP051
CPU: Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 2.80GHz (2 CPUs)
Memory: 2046MB RAM
Operating System: Windows XP Media Service Pack 3

Video: NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT 512.0 MB
Hard Drive: Western Digital WD5000AAKX-001CA0 462.0 GB

Main problem I see is it's overusing the CPU and underusing the GPU. Oddly enough the GPU gets hit harder in surveyor than it does in driver, which should be the opposite since driving is where you need the full power of the GPU for smooth animation.

Dunno anything about AMD triple cores, first I heard of any multicore without an even number - I always thought it was 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, etc. Main thing that jumps out at me is that Radeon HD5450, that IS a "budget" card so you might need to reduce your quality sliders.

Got a triple core AMD here, on my number two PC uses all 3 cores in TS12. Worth mentioning that I had to tell Win7 it had three cores, device manager found them however the OS only found two. Needed to add it via Msconfig in the boot, advanced options section.

Didn't figure on W7 not seeing all 3 - strange. I got a little better perf. from OC'ing today - managed 3117 MHz stable and cool. I guess it's time to move to the phenom II 3.5GHz quad and see what happens. I've got all my trainz from 2006 up installed and will still use 2010EE for it's compat mode:p even after I buy TS12!! Glad to hear 12 will use all cores though, damn demanding resource hogs these are!

YEAH!! GOT IT!!

CLAM!! Your a genius! I thought just because my resource monitor saw all three so did W7.... Figured the OS using one core was by design as to free up the other two for other things?:hehe: So I went into msconfig and sure enough... Now my OS is using all 3 but SO IS TRAINZ!!! Problem solved! Now I can procrastinate for a little while longer on that $$$ upgrade:D

Malc,

What are the settings for Win7?

I can't find them in MSConfig. It must be a brain fart again.

Thanks,

John

Yeah I thought so too - then I upgraded 2010 to multiplayer and found out nothing will be supported below build 2.7.... 2010 overlooks a lot of that so I'll be running both and enjoying some of my old content:) Still can't wait to get ts2012 though just to see how much it's improved:confused:

Interesting thread. A little research reveals this. Bottom line: the MSCONFIG multicore 'fix' is a myth, according to that article.

Note: I'm only reporting what I find. I am not...and will never be...a software or hardware engineer. FYI.

You haven't found anything relevant to the problem being discussed.
Read the article again properly, that was a supposed fix to decrease boot time and has absolutely nothing to do with the operating system failing to detect the number of cores the processor actually has. If the OS is only detecting one core and you have more you need to set the figure in there.

Hey if you need more than one core to boot, you've seriously got to cut down on those desktop widgets:hehe: Seriously, the only difference it made for me is that THE most CPU intensive program I run (trainz) now uses all 3 rather than cooking one
