Calling Bendorsey

Dear Ben,
I wonder if you might help me out with an unusual platform canopy. It is of Frome in Somerset in the UK and can be a spline or a static object. Spline would be better but not vital.

This is for the third section of my WCL routes. I have more or less managed so far with existing assets for other things.

Here is an end shot, I have some more if you feel able to have a go for me.

Frome2-1.jpg

The station building sit in front of the canopy, I have used some small German station buildings for that, not quite right but pretty near.

Bless you,

Angela

Hi Angelah:

Would have gotten back to you earlier but I've been tied up buying a new computer (too mucho dinero, lol). Paul (of Paulz Trainz) sent me a heads up e-mail that you were a-callin (someone has to keep me straight). Full time job for Paul I guess, lol.

Old one is 7-1/2 years old and on its legs. Very unwilling to boot up from a cold start (like it was turned off at night) so I've been putting it into sleep mode overnight. So far so good but its only a matter of time befor its kaput. Not worth upgrading as what it would need to really modernize it won't work. It won't even try to run TRS2010. Just sits there until I turn it of to clear the hangup (or whatever it is).

Sure - be glad to make it for you.
Just need:
1. A few more photos - side (both if different) end (both if different), close ups of details (if available), and one from an overhead angle (if possible).
2. Basic dimensions (length, width, height, etc).

Thanks Ben,
Photos I can only get off Google Earth as I am miles away from Frome (I live near Heatherow which is nice and peaceful these last two days with all the aircraft grounded). I have an inside view and one from the station side which only gives the top I am afraid. An overhead I can get off Google.

My old PC died ajust before Chrismas gone (probably the Ghost of Christmas that did it!) and I lost a whole load of stuff. have a new one now but even this needs a better graphics card I think. I use an even older PC to run GE next to me so I can have the place I am working on the route visible and get a reasonable idea what it's like. Think I can work out the length/width for you (more or less) from the shots and our strange English cars and trains - and even stranger people!
Paul is a good lad (I can say lad at my age) but he'll know what I mean.
I am going to have a bash at either GMax or Blender myself, both are on my PC. Blender book and CD are on their way from Europe but with no planes a-flyin' goodness knows when it will arrive. I am told Gmax is probably better but each will have it's 'fans' and they will mainly promote their favourite program. many moons ago I poked my nose round the door of Gmax but only dabbled, didn't get anywhere really and I had the first section (WCL1) in the middle of being built then, so time was at a premium. Well, it still is I suppose and the older I get the more premium it's going to be!

Here, I'd better stop yakking...

More pics
Frome4.jpg

The inside. It's the same both ends and sides. Correction, the outer side has a window long the top as seen here.

Frome3.jpg

The only view of the front I can get, it's the bit sticking out above the station building. The white wall left is the canopy, the station building just butt to it.
Unfortunately no view of the other side but I think it's just a plain white wall, wooden probably.

I'll come back with measurements....

Bless you,

Angela

Measurements

All at a guess...

11.5 feet to eve. Apex probably 3.5 feet(?)

Length judging by cars and doors/windows approx 108 feet.

Maybe better as a spline then length would not matter, only problem the door...

Double track width, one track removed.

Blessings,

Angela

Hi Angelah:

I know what you mean by loud airplanes. I worked within 50 ft of jet engines running at maximum power for 15 years (and yes - I'm hard of hearing, lol). Enjoy the peace & quiet as it won't last forever. I keep the news channel on while Gmaxing and they announced a little while ago Heathrow would be shut down all day tommorrow too. They were hoping to get flying later in the afternoon but tain't gonna happen. I'm quite familiar with what happens to jets engines when they run thru an ash-plume. Coat the blades and pretty much all interior surfaces. Eventually the engine either quits or goes boom.

I bought an Alienware Aurora (you do not want to know what it cost). Supposed to be specifically designed for high end graphics and gaming. I don't zap aliens - just Gmax and Trainz and the only time I run Trainz is to test something I've made before uploading it. Working on The Humber Bridge at the moment which on your side of the pond I believe.

The two photos will really help. I should be able to work most of it out from them. I assume both ends are the same (they usually are). Few projects ahead of you but not too many. Shouldn't be too long (and I'm waiting on info on some of them). Might be able to slip this in. Will hold off until I get some dimensions. I can convert meters to ft (well my calculator can, lol).

Normally I'd print those pics out but my printer is out of ink (and on its last legs too). Bought a top of the line HP (which didn't work right out of the box). Replacement arrived yesterday (it won't work either). HP folks supposed to call me at 2:30 this afternoon but its almost 4 and the phone ain't ringing.

Later,

Ben

Last but not least

The roof view....

A bit hazy, but then it is out in the back and beyond and GE doesn't give a very clear image in the wilds of England, and I do mean 'wilds'!

Bless you,

Angela

EDIT : I always, but always use Epson printers. Never been let down yet.

The Humber bridge is this side of the puddle but way, way up the other end of our terra firma, too far for me to run tonight anyway.
I am deaf one side too and half deaf (and probably daft) the other. I am one of these old dears who keep say 'Eh, what was that sonny?'

I like to fly model helos when I get time, never much of that right now though... Yeah, I watch SKY so know about ash clouds and jets. Had an accident your side once, didn't they?

I have miles to do on this part of the route so no great panic, I can always shoot back and place it. It's very hilly so it mucks the DEM up and takes ages to put right again. I rarely run Trainz as Trainz, just to test the routes, it bores me otherwise. I do enjoy the ride now and then through the scenery though. So now you all know - I get bored with Trainz - lol....

Try using the historical imagery button (the clock icon on the buttons), and selecting the 2001 satellite pass. It's a little less blurry, IMO.

Charles: Thanks for the link. Wrote the dimensions down.

Angelah:

If the building was symetrical I could make it as a spline but those little side buildings (station buildings, storage, offices, and his-n-her loos) prevent that.

I have an old (and I mean old) Epson model LQ-1170 dot matrix printer. Haven't used it in years. Ribbon is undoubtedly kaput. I used it with my previous computers (I have 6 Commodore computers that still work). 2 C-64's, 2 C-128's, and 2 C-128D's. Even have 2 hard drives that work with them. A massive 1Gb capacity, lol. The were fun at the time and we all started somewhere.

Never got into airplanes. Nothing wrong with them as a hobby of course. I have a 14 ft 6 in by 40 ft HOn3 model railroad (that I haven't touched since getting Gmax and Trainz). Hobby gotten too expensive. One little HOn3 0-6-0T loco was $495.00. K-37's are $950.00 (Prowlers are a heck of a lot cheaper, lol).

Never do anything with the sky other then look at it with my telescope (I'm a bit of an amature astronomer), dodge the rain on my motorcycles, and batten down the hatches for hurricanes.

Google Earth has a built in measuring too, its the ruler icon at the top of the image. I use it for all my models, to measure the dimensions of buildings, only thing you have to guess is the height.

Ye Gods Ben, you have some 'interesting' stuff there. By the by, when my old dot matrix ribbon gave up several years back now I experimented with typewriter ones and got it working again. Don't use it now of course.

I meant SKY television, not the sky where our God lives (I think.... He can live anywhere He likes I suppose, maybe in our souls). Perhaps you don't have SKY TV over there?
Model trains are expensive, got too dear for me and I sold them all as you will see from my site. Trainz is an absolute bargain!
Yes, I saw the piccy of you on your mean machine, most impressive.... In my mad youth I got on the pillion of a 500 Norton and the guy took me on a hair-raising trip along a dual carriageway. I think I litterally froze on the back!
I had not meant for you to build the station buildings but if you want to then fine by me, it was the canopy that gave me a problem. If it's an all-in-one thing then that's okay too.

And thanks to everybody else for their help, all a great help to Ben in his efforts, for which I am truly grateful.

Bless you all,

Angela

Hi Angelah:

Ok - I'll just make the canopy. Printed out the photos.

A Norton huh? Be worth some $$$ nowdays. A local friend has an 850. Think he brought it with him from England. He is from the Brighton area (Shoreham I think).

I have a 3-wheel motorcycle with a 350 cubic inch (5700 cc) V-8 engine in it. Ride it every day. I also have a 2-wheel motorcycle with a 502 cubic inch (8226 cc) in it (over 500 horsepower). Called a Boss Hoss. At my age (66) I don't ride it anymore. It was fun tho (watching everybody dissappearing in my rear-view mirrors). One of these years I have to get off me bum and get it ready to sell. Just gathering dust in my garage at the moment.

Nobody heard of a Vincent Black Shadow ?? or a BMW horiz opposed twin with tank gearshift and rod drive ?? or a Triton (Triumph & Norton combino)

Had them all ..... Damn we made some good bikes !!

Hi Paul:

O-yeah - a black shadow was one of my "someday" bikes but never happened. Great set of wheels (and fast).

Another "someday" bike was a 500 cc (single cylinder) Norton (which also never happened, lol).

I did have a 500cc Triumph (1953 model). It was a rolling oil leak but I was 15 years old and had the biggest bike at school.

I had 3 BMW's (many many years ago). R-26 (250 cc single), R-60 (600 cc twin), and a R-69s (also 600 cc twin but more horsepower). Wish I still had the R-26. A farly rare set of wheels. A R-25 had an open driveshaft so you could see it turn. The R-26 had an enclosed shaft.

Ben

Or maybe an Arial Square 4 ?? I even had 2 really old parallogram forks 100cc affairs

Wished I had room to store them all, they would be worth a fortune now !!

Enough of this ... its a Trainz forum LOL

Sorry Angelah, but us old farts have to remember ya know (cant spell reminiss)
