Bypass EDR When Starting Trainz or CM

epa

Angry Trainz Nerd
With Trainz/CM crashing (thus force-killing TADDaemon, and EDR) outrageously often, I have to run EDR's (extended database repairs) very often, and with over 300,000 assets, it takes a while. Installing content (which takes 30 seconds to a couple minutes) now takes almost two and a half hours, counting the EDR before launching Content Manager.

Is it possible to bypass the EDR while launching?

Thanks,
Matt

Edit: For those wondering, yes, I'm using Windows 8.1.

Edit 2: I'm using TS10, build 49933.

Yes, there is a way to bypass it. You have to go to the Auran Folder, open that, and double click on the Trainz 2010 folder. Double click on the bin folder, and run the trainz.exe, and it's start the game without having to go through the launcher.

And you can do the same to get to Content Manager.

I would still do at least a quick database repair when you're finished doing whatever you're wanting to do.

I will try that. However, CM still freezes on "Please Wait..." very often, and I'm forced to use task manager to close it, and then kill TADDaemon, resulting in an EDR. Any idea why CM freezes and crashes so often?

K, this is not what you are asking for, but might be useful anyway:
over 300,000 assets
Good news; you probably did not download the whole DLS, so a majority of those assets are still on the DLS. Even if you did, you can loose a lot of that.

What could speed up is clean up the junk of assets you have locally and do not use anymore. I am not talking about going over all assets you don't like, but deleting all the obsolete assets you might have pilled up by downloading updates.
See what you can clean up by setting a filter on "location = local", "built-in = false" and "obsolete = true". Delete what shows up; you sure do not need that anymore.
After that, consider a defrag.

This does not avoid the EDR, but it might speed it up a tiny bit.

I don't want to sound alarmist, but it's possible that you have deeper problems (such as disk or driver errors) that need to be solved before you can get back to trouble-free Trainzing.

I raise this possibility because I had similar problems recently, and repeated EDR's did not eliminate them. Happily I was able to identify all the little errors that had gradually accumulated on my PC, and then solve each one individually, simply by Google searching for the solutions. I am not a computer technophile, so the fact that I could do this more or less by myself should be some sort of encouragement.

If you want to pursue this line of enquiry, I refer you to a thread where I wrote down what I did. Random crashes to restart - how to analyse?.

this is often because something is needing a repair/reorganize in the database. the more you interrupt this process by killing the program in task manager the more often you will have to run database repairs. if you just let it complete it's task you can avoid the problem.

by forcing the programs to stop you are in effect causing the very problem.
