BR Liveries

BRClass66

Always needing help
Hi,
I know absolutely nothing about Br liveries/sectors.....well i can guess the coal sector/livery takes just coal
BR Petroleum - takes fuel oil diesel
BR Construction - Gravel cement

What would move cattle/livestock/corn/wheat/goods/cars/wood etc.

could someone run me through what moves what please,or a website that explains the running of these sectors ?

As i may have different trains/sectors running maybe the wrong commodities.

Regards
Brad

@tension69,

thanks for that, but reading through the website (as i dont know about these things)
i think i mean SECTORS.

I think the LIVERY is the paint job
And the SECTORS are what it was made to haul.

thats my understanding, dont know if im right or not?

I need a understanding of what commodities where hauled by what Sector

Thanks again
Brad

Sadly, most of these categories of freight had long gone from Britain's railways by the time of sectorisation, certainly livestock. :(

Anything not covered by Construction, Coal, Metals or Petroleum sectors was normally allocated
to 'Railfreight Distribution' (otherwise known as 'Speedlink') as shown below.

@ Paulsw2...So we don't move cattle/Livestock by rail anymore?

@BLACKWATCH...cracking answer..2 lines answers all

cheers

No, we don't. Or corn, wheat or wood either I think. Wagon load freight has pretty much disappeared from Britain's railways. :(

Well wood does now and again as per this picture

The service originates from Ribblehead works to Carlisle yard then Carlisle yard to Chirk hauled by Colas Rail freight class 66's.

I've seen pictures of it running in July, August and October.

Metals - Transported steel to and from steel works and i think cars
Distribution - Transport of intermodal and freightliner containers
General - Usually box vans, etc. (I think i maybe wrong)
Coal - As you suspected the transportation of coal mainly to power stations
Construction - As you suspected quarry aggregates such as limestone, gravel, stone, etc.
Petroleum - As you suspected the transportation of oil and other liquid fuels.

Note though the 2 links from that Trainload freight wiki page are slightly wrong as they show loco's in the earlier railfreight grey / red stripe and the later railfreight distribution. These 2 liveries weren't part of the trainload freight sectorisation services.

All loco's carried a triple grey livery with their indivudual sector logo as shown on that page.

for example double headed 37's (metals) hauling a loaded steel train bound for Corby steel works
