It is likely your VPN provider has a small block of IP addresses that you use from your location. Some or all of the addresses have been blocked for guessing passwords. I used to see this all the time, attacks coming from IP blocks of VPN companies. The bad guys think you have to whitelist those addresses. But the ISP I worked for treated them same as other IP addresses. Fail2Ban blocks them for failing passwords.
I'm using a VPN right now without any problems . It's possible that your network is busy and this is causing a timeout due to your VPN causing a slower connection to start with. I've noticed that occurring more and more as when the kids in my neighborhood stay home from school. Being a Friday and along weekend, the kids are playing video games instead of playing outdoors.
