Blocked Forum Pics by my Admin

Trainz Luvr since 2004
I just noticed some pics in the forums seem to be blocked by my company's admin. Other pics seem to come through just find.

I'm no expert on network admin for sure. What information would I give my admin so he might unblock this content?

Thanks.

You might tell your Admin, these pictures are for "educational purposes", hence are important.

Or, your second, moonlighting job is as an engine driver, signal man, brakeman, you need to "train" (no pun intended) and keep up with the latest.

Or tell him/her, you are a CIA, National Security, Homeland, MI5 etc. undercover agent, these pictures are a means of communicating with your superiors for instructions. If asked how this is possible, tell him/her, this is top secret.

Or, if your Admin is male, remind him to his childhood, where he possibly had been playing with train sets. You on the other hand only had Barby dolls and the like to play, you would like to catch up on what you had missed out in your childhood.

I am sure, you will think of something :'(.

What I was getting at is what technical info would I need to give him. I don't know where all these pics are hosted at. Do they need to know or will forums.auran.com suffice?

What is actually being blocked?

Could it be the pics are not blocked by your admin but they can't be seen be course the uploader has to many pics on his account at ImageShack?
They have new rules, more than 500 images and the older images will be removed unless you pay 2 dollars a month for a pro-account.

Pictures are usually hosted at various sites - ImageShack,Photobucket,HostThenPost etc.

I understand. So would he have to give permissions to all these sites?

Not in this case because the same forum pics are visable from my home isp.

Hi, my post above was meant in jest as the days nowadays are dreary and drab and often need some humor injected into it. If you move your mouse pointer over the pictures showing, right clicking when doing so, you will see the image info there. In other words, this will show you from where these images come from when you can see pictures. Hence you will know the sites/pics which pass through.

If you have instead of the pics not showing, something else there, which might also give you similar information, well, then you will know which pics/sites are banned. Admins of larger firms/corporations usually ban the showing of pics from certain sites, understandably, as the showing of these pics seen by employees will hinder productivity etc. You can also ask your Admin, I am sure he/she might/will tell you the reason why some pics are blocked and some of the web sites affected.

*Edit: pictures displayed here come from all sorts of web sites, for example the pictures I usually display here are hosted on my own web site. If the Admin has deemed my web site off limit for you to see, you will not see any of my pictures displayed here, same with all the many other web sites, some listed above, if these are blocked.

If the pics are available from your home, right-click each of the ones that you cannot see at work then click Properties. The Address (URL) part should help.

I know where I used to work Photobucket was blocked due to adult content, least that what the popup said! However they also blocked AOL.com for the same reason, no loss there :hehe:. The Linux Forum I frequent blocks Photobucket and a few others due to supposed privacy issues. I suspect that was more a case of paranoia from "someone" reading something about xyz site and malware or tracking cookies etc.

My employer uses "Websense", and I suspect they manage permissions offsite. One less headache for the in house IT staff.

That's one thing I was trying to understand. How easy it would be for him/her to enable me to view the Trainz forum in all its' glory... maybe I could by them lunch a couple of times. :o

It's almost three years since I retired, so things may have changed, but permissions used to be "managed" locally. Websense provides a list of internet sites (similar to the virus profiles that AV vendors provide) sorted by various categories - gaming, porn, file sharing, hacking, etc. At the highest level, the administrator can just block all sites in the category for everyone on the company internet. If there are sites within a category which need to be accessed (or if blocking causes more trouble than it's worth - try blocking eBay), specific sites can be allowed for all employees. If some employees need access to a site (or a category of sites) that can be granted by user group or specific user id. This is more than you needed (or wanted) to know but someone in-house "should" have control over what is accessed on the company internet.

That's what I assumed. I'm only suggesting that the local guys receive a list, and probably implement all of it, and the reasons for the blocked sites are offsite.
