Blender and Python

Just installed Blender and Python (Blender 2.44) and latest version of Python. WhenI start blender I get a screen that says Blender cannot find Python. Can I use Blender without Python or do I really need to find a way to fix things. I,m not sure but I think you have to have Python for scripting, I could be wrong though. Specs : Windows 7; Blender is running in X86, Machine is a Dell studio XPS I know that isn't much help but if need be I will get more specs, The machine does have an ATI card which I was told there are some problems in compatibility. Should I possible go to 2.5 , understood, there may be some problems getting 2.5 meshes to work in Trainz though. Thanks for any help offered.

Hmm, blender 2.44 is quite old and would certainly not use the latest version of Python. The current version(s) in use would be either 2.49b or the newest, with revamped user interface, 2.57b.
If you're new to blender you probably best off with the 2.57b version, if you're allready acquainted with blenders old interface you should at least go for 2.49b.
In both cases all build in (python) scripts will work with the buildin runtime python version provided in the distribution. Only more sophisticated third party scripts could need a seperate python installation. Afaik the exporter for trainz doesn't need a seperate python install. If you do want to expand the script possebilities of blender you should goto the blender website and check what version of python is needed for the distribution you want to install.

Blender?

Thank you Jan. Will take your advice and get the latest version of blender. Will deleate old version of blender and python and start over. Got the old version from a help book I purchased. Would I actully be better just getting it from Afaik as all I am going to use it for is creating Trainz content? Do they have a website? Probsbly means the book is useless!
Thanks, George

Well, if you got a book with that version (2.44) and you want to use the book to learn, you're probably best off with starting with the 2.49b version, since that will have the same user interface as the book. :hehe:

There was a link in my previous post to the blender website and here it is again, but now directly to the older versions page. Click the first link there and select the windows version in the blender 2.49b directory tree.

Hope this helps.
