Best Places to find content

I'm a total newbie here and have spent a few weeks browsing the download station and the content browser thing (sp) but I'm at a loss. When I search for routes/layouts on the download station I get 1,000 routes!!!! Wow.

- How do I ever filter these to find the "best" ones? Only guidance is the number of downloads and a short description with screenshots. Im realizing until I download the whole thing with all assets and start it up, I'll never know if its a good one or not.

- how do I find free and paid content? I believe, besides auran, there are places out there to download new locos, routes and stuff?

hoping to find a thread/forum with feedback on most popular content?

Thanks!

Hi bmheron,

CMP will list all the routes on the DLS if you filter by category, routes and location, DLS. For items on other websites look through the Freeware and the Payware forums, you should get some leads there. As for what is a good route, that depends entirely on what you want but the number of downloads should give some indication of populariy. Don't forget this sim covers most of the world's railroads so what one user considers a good route another user might not be intrested in. If you have a first class ticket and a fast internet connection it is not too much trouble to download a route to tryout and if you don't like it you can always delete it.

As routes go, it really depends on what in which you are interested. Assuming you're into U.S.-themed freight, you'll probably love the work of neilsmith749, Dermmy (checkrail.com) and philskene and MSGSapper, on the DLS) If you're into passenger or tram stuff, look at ohmstalbahn on the DLS, trainzland.de (they have 2 payware routes, Cabon City and Modula City) and there are many eastern European sites with quality heavy passenger stuff.

I did have a decent-sized list posted in a thread though I can't seem to find it since the forum upgrade.

P.S. there are many fine routes but great creators which I simply forgot to mention.

Edit: Fixed up my post based on the suggestion of others

You're right. Again, my list was not at all meant to be all-inclusive, and one of the things I dislike about answering posts like this is that I often forget to mention a great contributor. Philskene and MSGSapper are top-notch and some of the finest creators in the train sim community, as have others not mentioned here.

I actually just tried gaurc.us, and I got the "Forbidden" message. But yes, those are excellent suggestions!

Ah, yeah, I forgot, his site got hacked and he took it down. It's a bummer, because Caddy is a good creator...I hope he puts it back up, or puts his routes on the DLS.

Thanks everyone. I didnt reply back right away b/c I was busy following up on the info and links. I think I 've gotten started and have enough content, for now, to keep me happy. I got some freeware stuff. Bought some awesome cabooses with interiors as well. I'm learning that im really into the interiors or passenger cars, and also the cabooses. seems like my thing. then today Auran posted that great 50% voucher. So i just went on and bought: 4 different locos with cool interior passenger cars (coronet, duchess, blue comet, PRR passenger), TRS 2010 engineer edition (comes with alot of great content!), and a first class ticket (one year). So I'm all set...for now.

So one final question -- the First Class Ticket. Can I use it both in Content Manager and DST? I tried getting some of the free routes using content manager and I cant believe how impossible it was to download. I think I had 800MB+ in there and probably wouldve had it all downloaded by christmas :-). So Im seeing the value of the 1st class ticket. Just want to use it the best way.

Content Manager and the DLS are one and the same. Just different ways of getting to the content. Content Manager is better or downloading routes as it finds and downloads all of the dependencies for you (if they are there). The DLS is great for finding and downloading assets such as industries, locomotives, rolling stock, etc.
