Best O.S. For Trainz?

Hi All,

Christmas is fast approaching  and my fiancee was wondering what I wanted for Xmas. I've decuded to hold off upgrading my computer's hardware for now, but I think I read somewhere that XP is the best operating system for the trainz series (I currently use 04 the most at the moment) and I was wondering if others could confirm that.

I am currently running win2K as my O/S and have been holding off on getting XP all this time as it's been expensive and win2k has been very stable and good to me these past 5 years or so. My computer is a bit older but I still have a decent graphics card and was wondering if upgrading to XP would yield significant performance results or not.

From all I've heard about Vista, I probably wouldn't go that way but I'm just wondering what the current line of thinking about this is.

Thoughts and comments are kindly appreciated! :)

One of the design goals of XP was to give better preformance in games. It should put your frame rate up 10%. However going to TC and running it under Vista will give you a similar gain provide you have enough memory. People have it running under 64 bit Vista and if you purchase the full retail version you will be able to move it to another machine. Microsoft are quite good at letting you drop back to XP if it doesn't work for any reason. So bung in some more memory and go 64 bit Vista if your hardware is fairly recent.

Thanks all for your replies :)

I'll probably hold off upgrading everything until March. I finish my contract at that point and I'll be taking a month or two off to relax most likely. My computer will be 1 and 1/4 year old by that point and in need of an upgrade.

I'll probably go with a dual core system, keep my vid card until it dies (an nVidia 7600 gt) get another gig of memory so that I'll have 2 gigs and get a decent soundcard. I figure all those upgrades should help about 10-20% in terms of performance. I've also disabled some of the built in items and deleted some of the items I downloaded that I no longer use (takes a few minutes for trainz to start up at this point).

At least making a route in mid/low spec computer is good for those in the community as I'm sure not many people have the money to have a cutting edge system and those that do will see it fly! :D

Thanks for the input all!

I run a duel boot computer with W2k and XP, and I can not see any speed difference in Trainz. The only big differnce is how full the hard drives are.

I agree with Whitepass. I run TRS2004, TRS2006 and TC on two PCs with nearly identical specs. One has Win2K Pro and the other XP Pro. I get the same performance from both machines with a slight advantage to Win2K due to having almost all non Trainz background processes turned off.

Great. :) I'll stick with win2k then until it rusts then! :D

Thanks for your advice gents.

Much faster than Windows XP ist Linux (Ubuntu 7.10). Tested on TRS2004 PTP (German marked version - compare with TRS2006 without SP1).

cheers

Ubuntu 7.10 with WINE runs Trainz quite nicely, is more stable than Windoze, looks better than OSX, and is free...

I use Vista which hasn't really given me any qualms with Trainz, but I'd really suggest XP Pro w/SP2, its a much better system and it uses a lot less RAM than Vista.

Out of curiosity does GMAX run under Ubuntu and the other concern would be graphics drivers for the video cards.

From what I've heard it does not, -basti- is running Trainz on Ubuntu 7.1 but he said that GMAX does not run with it. So unless somehow it does work with some fooling around I don't think it would.

Do you have the setup?

I have TRS2006 and Trainz Classics running under wine and Crossover. I was wondering, did you have to do anything special to get TRS2004 to run? I'm asking because at first with TRS2004, it would work under Crossover just fine but after applying the fixpack I get the annoying Directx issue. Could you also share your tips and version info for wine etc?

Thanks!
