I see that you posted your question yesterday and no one has responded, so I will give it try.

I am using two computers, a 6 year old IBM and a new Lenovo. Both are SFF desktops. The older computer has a Creative xfi Sound Blaster. The new rig is similar to yours in that it has the i5 and on board audio. Truthfully with the latest improvements in intels on-board audio, I found little if any difference in sound quality between the two systems using an Altec Lansing 2.1 setup. Hope this helps.

I too have two comps running, one I just built, the other 18 months old. The old one has a Audigy4 Pro set up with all the whistles and bells, the new one uses the on-board sound and is just as good.
The way that main boards have advanced now makes them very good on the sound side of things. I play dvd's, cd's, games and Trainz on the built in sound with my 5:1 surround system and it's perfect.

I also have on-board audio. I bought speakers with a sub-woofer that plugged into my computer, what a difference! No need to hassle with a new sound card, either.

My motherboard has 'onboard' Realtek HD Audio, I run this through a Marantz HI-FI amp & 3way base ported speakers or a good pair of headphones.

Well I think you can safely say that the on-board is fine and save your money for a more needed upgrade in the future.

On-board audio is a decent choice these days although in some circumstances (low-end processor) it can restrict game performance as the processor on the computer has to deal with audio as well as everything else. This is a very minor problem these days and you should not notice a problem, but if your audio does seem laggy or jerky then an addon soundcard might be the way to go.
