Are there any people on strips?

Trainzing since 12-2003
I've been looking for strips of people I can place on sidewalks and other places to liven up my current route. In the past I've used the platform people, but they're flipboards and look really gross! Having the strips is a lot easier than placing individual people who will then sink into the sidewalk and are difficult to position and move. With strips I can clutter up a queue or two, making sidewalks and platforms come alive, and they will then be easily positioned as well. They can be both long and short with clumps and people spread out.

I've used cars on sticks such as those by MSGSapper which work great, but I haven't seen anything like this for people. Has anyone seen anything like this?

Would someone be willing to make something like this?

I may make one myself if I can figure it out. I assume people can be attached to a fixed track object (invisible texture) using the attachment maker if this is possible.

How about using neoklai's people and just a blob of track for them so they stand still. There are walking and standing versions I'm sure.

That might work. I was thinking about all the built-in people though. There are plenty of them and they'd match what's already at the stations.

Yes one way of doing it is a mesh scenery item with attachment points and add the people as attachments. Sorry a bit busy at the moment loosing excess polys / adding Lod on a couple of hundred buildings, knew I should have done it as I went along................

Thanks guys for the thoughts on this.

I hope someone else with the abilities other than the minimal ones I have can do this. I can reskin and build routes better than make things. :)

No worries, Malc. If you want to take up the project in a 100 years, that's okay. :)

There were certainly some strips of people 'built-in' in TRS2004, but they were flat and rather like cardboard cutouts. I'm not sure if they are still there in 2010; they might look OK in the background or from certain viewing angles.

Another idea which might be worth trying is to use an invisible station on which the passengers are height-adjustable, use the properties button to make it show the number of people you want, and place it where you want it. Don't attach track - or if it has built-in fixed track, get rid of it by attaching invisible spline track and then deleting the spline.

Please note that I have not tried this - it's just a random early morning thought!

Just one slight correction of Ray's post. :)

If the route is to be released and you wish to use the invisible station idea, do not delete the track. If you do, the default tracks that were used will show up. Jst keep a short spline of invisible track attached to the end. :)

And if I am completely wrong, tell me and others so others can disregard what I said.

Watch out if you use People Monitor - there's a chance that at least some of the people that the asset uses are faulty (and also the People Monitor does not actually contain any people)

Apologies for the slight "off topic", but what does People Monitor do?

I've seen it in my list of assets and often wondered why it is there.

It's an asset that supports certain 'people' assets via an attachment point (which is on an invisible mesh). From memory, it only works with people from the same author as the People Monitor.

The description says "This Monitor is needed once on each map which uses built-in passengers as scenery objects. Visible only in Surveyor."

Thanks both.

I now have several dozen new "people" who were previously just flat red squares!

It would be interesting to know why it is necessary to have the special People Monitor asset in place before these characters (by the same author kuid:70791) materialise. What is the advantage?

All of my other characters made by others appear first go, just like any other object.

This is getting interesting.

The idea of using a platform might work, although they are a bit long and the people all face the traffic. I will try the invisible track and the attachment maker and see what I get. I have all the time in the world now, and it's not like I'm wasting money on plastic parts only to find out nothing works, right!

Ray - I looked at the cardboard cut-outs. They look just like that and are really low resolution in TS12. They also have sound associated with them, like that of a big crowd for 6 people. :) They were great in their day, but we've moved on to better looking assets since then. It's like anything we have. In the old days we had giant TVs with tiny black and white displays, now we have giant TVs with big flat displays and crystal clear images. :)

Anyway, I don't see this working any different than the usual platforms. I'll have to figure out their orientation though which might be a problem.

John, this is interesting. What about using invisible tram stops? The people are in a more compact group and some of them face away from the attached track.

MezzoPrezzo, how do you get the people to appear when using the People Monitor. The only dependency shown is the Auran Passengers, but nothing seems to happen when I put the People Monitor in the map?

@Scottish

As Shane says, you need to also have the individual people assets made by the same creator.

Just laying the People Monitor square does nothing, as far as I know, other than allow the selected character/s to appear.

I had downloaded several of MGalling's figures (DLS, kuid:70791) which, until today, simply sat on the baseboard as a red square, so I didn't bother to use them. There are around 300 of them (1 of which I found doesn't work, just showing a green asset name label in Surveyor). To find them make sure the TRS2004 box is ticked.

After today I now have several very usable additional 3d characters to play with. :)

However, I still don't understand the need for having to place the extra People Monitor asset to get them to appear. Very odd, and not something done by creators of any other people assets I have used.

This typical statement, "Female49 as scenery object (reference into built-in content)", which appears in the DLS search results pages doesn't offer me much of a clue either. I can't help thinking that I might be missing out on something quite useful here.

An explanation would be really helpful.

From a quick look it appears that MGalling's are all aliased to the People Monitor, which uses a script. Without pulling the script to pieces. my best guess is that it causes (is some clever way) the built in people assets to be "loaded" into the map, presumably invisibly and thus allows the aliased versions to work.
