Wondering if anyone has been modeling trains. i need help with scenery tips and how to apply the ground foam. here is the up-to-date statistics of my layout-

22" inch Atlas radius.
double track sidings with one spur.
atlas switches.
no montains yet.

thats it except for my moel Class J. Tips needed

I'd say apply the blue terrain foam in 2, 1, and 1/2 inch incraments, and then sculpt that as needed for the regular ground terrain. For big mountains and even moderate hills, I'd use a wood-cardboard-newspaper-and-paper-mache approach, with a couple of moulded rock features thrown in for fun (Woodland Scenics is one of the best companies to buy from for scenicking).

EDIT: betsy662 is currently working on his model railroad, so I'd look at his videos.

414Scootermon here. Been modeling most of my adult life - now nearly 70yrs. Tried almost every kind of base material there has been. Currently modeling a modest layout using lyaered building foamboard. Find this better (for me) than the hardshell scenery method. Kan do almost anything with it one wants. Even glue in a new hunk and re-do a goof. Ground sawdust - fine, coarse, med - works well even over foamboard. Yes! Woodland Scenics is great. Kalmbach is here in my backyard as I am in Milwaukee area.
Happy Trainz and modeling!
