After a month of fighting Trainz (2010) on my desktop (see my post "Trainz won't run" for the gory details), I have finally managed to get it up and running. I decided to bypass my saved User Data folders and just download stuff I was missing, since I still had no idea which, if any, asset was causing the complete meltdown.
But another couple of oddites. I have been adding locos and rolling stock from some of the awesome third-party sites that have 09/10 assets. However, several of those would fail to commit, because of a "file access error." However, it almost all cases, selecting the failures and recommiting them worked. Only in 2 assets did I have to try a third time.

The other strange thing I am seeing now is that Content Manager and the Download Station don't seem to be on speaking terms. I have had several of these third-party assets with missing dependencies, and I have also done DLS searches from within CM. When I look at the missing dependencies, they have most often been missing product loads a car can carry. But they always have the question mark next to them as a "Unknown Location". But when I look for it via DLS, I have always found them. If I add it to CM to download, it still has that ?, but it downloads them just fine.
When I first started to replace all of my missing assets, I started with majekear's outstanding rolling stock. But when I searched for Author: majekear under Category: Rolling Stock and Location: Download Station, it found TWO assets. But when I removed the DLS filter, it found hundreds, most with the "?". But they all downloaded just fine.
Just another reason to approach this restoration of my hobby with cautious optimism. Trainz is still, and I think with always be, a fragile environment. But thanks to majekear, euphod, sporbust and the jaw-dropping offerings of RR Mods, Jointed Rail and others, I have a good start to what I hope is a full recovery.
