An alternative to the DLS??

Hi folks

With all the problems with the DLS of late, I'm just wondering if we can make reccommendations of other sites to upload to??

I know we have Trainlvr, although you don't see a lot of new stuff appearing there. I've never used Trainlvr so I don't know what their conditions are for uploading content. If it was me I'd be uploading a few PS locos I've done of late, just until the DLS has its problems sorted out.

Are there other sites that offer an alternative to the DLS??

Hi Col,

What about TPR, they have a Upload/Download section. I am not to sure about all the details but it would not be hard to check out.

There is nothing to stop you uploading Trainz files to the established download sites such as Train-sim.com or UK Trainsim. That's what I did with my West Highland route which was too big for the DLS and indeed my Sulitjelma route while pending acceptance on the DLS. It also means you can include a readme file in the (zip) archive with the cdp to give people far more information than the brief text possible within Surveyor.

Of course if you've used DLS items to populate the route, end users will need to connect after install to gather any required assets. And if people start doing this for items other than routes it will fragment and make more difficult gathering dependencies.

Six and two threes as the DLS is or at least was one of Trainz' biggest pluses - all the content gathered in one place easy for all to access. However for the relatively large/long routes that I like to create the DLS isn't an option and external hosting is a must.

Colhad, I was about to suggest something similar last night - but I have a better suggestion. How about a complete replacement for the download station.

I think TPR is the largest and most stable site. I have some downloads on there.

Having said that the process for uploading is more complex than the DLS and the DLS is tightly coupled with CM2 etc.

Many of the European creators host at sites other than the DLS and its a pain in the neck to go chasing assets, especially when a web site disappears so the kuids are no longer available.

If you have something you want to make available such as Whitepass's normal mapped wagon when the DLS is not accepting items then it makes sense to use them and place the item on the DLS when it comes back up. However if you ever update items with different version numbers etc the DLS when it works is still the easiest.

The DLS reminds me of a Central Station operating with a single platform during peak hour. People with real railways quickly learned that to reduce peak hour queues they needed to build more trains and more platforms. We seem to have plenty of trains but just the one platform. Enough said. The download Station must be broken up into several servers. Ideally there should be one for buildings, one for trees and other objects, one for locomotives, one for freight wagons etc. I a real world four servers would be great, all hosting their share of the popular stuff. It doesn't have to be complicated for us. We just log on, choose our item and get sent to the correct server automatically.

Maybe that's already being done. If so, my wonderful solution is obviously not working very well at all.

Is your check, payable to Auran, to cover these additional servers.... "in the mail"?

Have fun,

Of course not.....for all the thought on this "wonderful idea", that part wasn't even on the same planet in the thought process.....at least not in this version of the "real world"....

I think the issue is uploading so I don't see that this would help.
