A Traction Engine as a wagon load????

KotangaGirl

Pre-Grouping Railways Nut
Does anyone know of a Traction Engine model for Trainz that can be loaded as a wagon load? I had a look on the DLS and there doesn't seem to be anything there.

Hi KotangaGirl.

If you have a traction engine as a static model it is not too difficult to change it to a commodity. Change the category class and add an attachment point that will match up on a wagon. Clone the item first of course.

Cheers,
Bill69.

Incidentally, why oh why does N3V call it a commodity in content manager and a product in the config file.
Could they not use one name in both? But well I suppose that would make it too user friendly.

Hello :)
Not a commodity, but a driveable traction engine..

slightly off topic, but you might like these..

Thank you very much for all those amazing links Graham. I'm sure they will be very useful as I continue to work on my layouts. Now I'm trying to think where I can set up a steam powered workshop with overhead shafting. And as for the driveable traction engine I can see that keeping me amused for hours.

Gee, a steam powered workshop. That brings back old memories, I used to work in one in a ship building yard in Scotland. It had 7 or 8 lathes lined up along one wall all powered by flat belts from a shaft along the top of the wall. My first job on a lathe was machining prop shafts and it would take about a day and a half to finish one shaft. All with high speed steel tools which you had to learn to sharpen yourself, no tipped tools in these days.

Cheers,

There are three static traction engines on the DLS which could be converted to products by altering the config file. Two are by Shoves but are build 1.3 so you need to tick all the boxes and the other is by jayholland (build 2.9). The only problem I see is that even loaded on a well wagon like a GWR Crocodile the funnel is too high. In real life it would be folded down. You can see this for yourself by moving the engine so that it is "on" the wagon and raising it's height (0.85m for the Crocodile).

Mick1960 Gruenderzeitfabrik should give you some ideas.

He has a thread around here somewhere showing his entire woodworking shop and yard. I believe he used a small vertical boiler for power.

Edit: I see Euromodeller beat me to it. :hehe: You can see the boiler out the window on the left in his pic.

While not traction engine there are skidder steam engines used in logging on the DLS. Some are commodities.

anl's Willamette steam yarder https://trainz-forge.com/p/loads is nice.

Stunning pictures Graham and they're giving me far too many ideas.

Thanks for the pictures and suggestions normhart, but I think log skidders as wagon loads wouldn't quite fit in so well in East Anglia.

I was going to load it on a GWR 'Loriot' which I was hoping would be low enough to keep the traction engine's chimney inside the loading gauge. Jay Holland's model was the one I was going to use to avoid any problems with TS2012 not liking the older models by Shoves.

All it needs is a config file referencing your favourite traction engine mesh, no need to clone anything or mess around with attachment points. Here's one I knocked together for Jay Hollands Traction engine. I can upload this to the DLS if you like...

You could use this method to convert any static model into a product just by changing the mesh table entries.

This started me wondering whether there was a model of a steamroller to go with the recent road works signs - and there is, both static KUID 381430:2466 and running KID 381430:2464, by Jay Holland. These were made for TS2009.

just one point to remember before anybody gets carried away; a product has to be a single mesh (unless somebody has at last managed to solve this problem).

Fortunately there are plenty of single mesh traction engines! The only exception seems to be the German one.

That would be really brilliant Ed, - thank you. It would definitely save me a job trying to do it as I'm very sleepy at the moment and I keep falling asleep in the middle of working on my Trainz projects which is a bit frustrating.

I do like that 'Lomac' in your picture by the way, - that's a model I haven't seen before. I was going to use the 'Loriot' I purchased from Paulz Trainz recently.

I'll upload my effort now. The lowmac is one of the bits of additional content from the S&C website.

Now that is something for me to remember in future. Thanks for that. Come to the Trainz forum and learn something new every day.

And Ray I very much agree, - Jay's steamroller would be prefect as a wagon load as well.

Thanks Ed. Somehow I must've missed seeing that 'Lomac' during my visits to the S&C website so I'll go and gather it up now.
