Here is a ride on the new and older, c.a. 1971-72, MBTA Red Line trains. These cars are equiped with a "railfan" window on the left side of the end of the trains. The older cars, shown here, came out when I was a kid. I was excited to ride them from Cambridge to Park Street because of the railfan window because I could see the track ahead of me.
When the 1700s were built, they had front-facing seats, so we could sit there and watch the tracks ahead. That changed sometime during the 1970s and 1980s when these seats were ripped out to make room for more passengers. In fact many of the seats were ripped out to allow for standing room.
I have yet to ride the 1800s. They were being built when I was working in Boston in the mid-1990s, and when they were on the system, I never rode one.
