Ok so I'm in Target the other day looking for something and I come across the software section, after checking out the usuals I discovered the "Discounted software section" and I came across "Trainz Driver Edition". So I thought "Well I've kinda been looking for a railroad simulator" and it looked pretty good so I thought "what the heck" and I bought it. After all, I had a LARGE Lionel collection when I was a kid (which I sold a few years ago, and thats a whole other story) and I was always saying I was going to buy a "N" gauge train set and start over. Well all I can say is WOW!!!!!!
This thing is AWESOME!!! The only way I can describe it is if you had a HUGE train set with cameras mounted all over it!!!! (after all, every one of us who had a train set when they were kids ALWAYS wanted a camera mounted in the cab) This thing is GREAT!!!! Then I started checking out the website and all the other stuff people have created!!! WOW!!! very impressed. needless to say, tomorrow I am going to look for TRS2006 or whatever the newest version is. then I can actually build my own railroad and not have to worry about it taking up half the house!!!

Welcome To The Wonderful World Of Trainz!

Welcome to Trainz!

You seamed pleased with the results already. It is a very nice program and there are a lot of old model railroaders that have ran out of space as well for their railroads and are here.

The newest edition is Trainz Classics, or TC as we call it. TRS2006, I use and think is your best bet. It has a lot of content avalible for it and run great. There is a service pack for it, which is tricky to install, but once you have it you will enjoy the program.

Many have been here for serveral years and are still enjoying it.
Take a look around, ask as many questions as you like, we always like to see and help new visitors here.:D

Climb aboard, hope you enjoy a trip that may never end!:):p

Cheers,
Adam

Glad to have you aboard, marvinj.

I'd suggest TRS2006 for lots of builtin content (makes it easier on you when you're downloading custom routes), but that's just my opinion.

Check out the Freeware and Payware forums for the best content around! :D

look into the full version if you want to make routes, and use custom content

Also, if your looking for a way more realistic driving simulator, check out the Rail Simulator demo from EA

Welcome to TRainz

I'd go for TRS2006 More content than you could ever want as others have said . BTW check your PC will handle it as it can become sluggish if you run some layouts.

Allot of members have Trainz on its own HD as it can become very large as there is no limit to the amount of content & routes available.

Read a few threads & you'll get an idea of the PC specs some of us are using. The more you download & the more complex it gets may PC's require a few upgrades to get it running smoothly

See if you can find Trainz Railwayz, It has Trainz Classics and the DVD version of TRS2006 with SP1 already installed.

Welcome aboard :)

Hello, Just recently bought both Trainz 2004 and 2006. E-bay and Office Max(!) Nothing over $20.00USD. Keep looking. The unopened packages are out there.

Welcome to Trainz, you'll probably want to purchase TRS2006 for the content and TC3 when it comes out for the game engine. TC is slightly better than TRS2006 IMHO. If you run TC be aware that you will need to copy in some TRS2006 .ja files to get the TRS2006 built in content.

If you're building a layout then you might like to try some of the DEM tools to get the landscape correct. This thing is open ended by the way.

welcome aboard to the world of TRAINZ. Beware, it is one of the most addictive activities that I"ve ever tried. You will see a lot of debate here about which is best, but in all reality, I don't believe you could go wrong with TRS2004 or TRS2006. I have both, but personally prefer 2004. Either one will give you hours and hours of enjoyment. If you really want to enjoy your driving experience, invest in a 'raildriver' controller for running your locos.

Welcome!
As you can see, there is a lot of debait about which version is better - TRS2004, or TRS2006. Do not let anyone influence you, buy/demo them both and see which one you prefer.

If you ever need any help, then don't hesitate to post in one of the forum sections!

Welcome indeed
Its a great program ( most of the time) I was like you and have never looked back since, ( I still have my HO layout ) but this opens a complete new world,

Have been building a freelance UK style route now for almost 2 years, and its some 200 boards at the moment, and I still have plans for expansion and unlike with models it easy to go back and change bits at a later date

I'd suggest you quit your job, forgo sleeping (forever), and find someway to keep your mouse hand and arm from nerve damage from the hours and hours you will spend (days and days?) playing with this program. It's to fun and should not be allowed to be given to adults without a warning labeled "Hazardous to all other activities, DO NOT, use unless you are of strong constitution and resolve to get up once in a while and do other petty and unimportant things like eating and using the bathroom." I'm sure I'm not the only one who now suffers from nerve damage of the hand from long and continuous nonstop use.

Well Marv you've gotten the bug for a program that provides the most fun for the least amount of monetary investment. (Computer upgrades not counted!).

I too have an extensive N-scale collection that was started when I was about 5 years old. I had my share of basement and bedroom empires, but always had to deal with outside disasters such as cats, floods, and the expense and up keep of my layouts. One day I discovered Trainz 2004, and as soon as it hit the shelves, I had it in my hands. The rest is history.

The N-scale equipment has been packed up, and my layout is now on the computer. What was once only a dream, has become a plausible and probable shortline that is now about 100 miles long and growing, and best of all, doesn't run in a circle of some sort. The other thing too, you don't need to worry about reverse loops and the crazy wiring needed to get blocks or DDC running especially in N-scale locomotives. That was my biggest nightmare especially with my cats that like to eat wires! I took my "dream" layout from my daydreams and made it into a virtual reality that has gone far beyond what I could imagine.

As a model railroader, you'll come to realize the power and capabilities that this open-ended program has. Like any model railroad, you can be involved in most any aspect from kit building/bashing and painting models, to landscaping and even wiring (scripting and programming). Everyone here has their niche, and for me it's the Surveyor where I spend 90% of my time. The best thing is driving the layout you've created and seeing the landscape go by from the driver's point of view. :) And like any model railroader, you'll find yourself looking around, thinking, planning what your next baseboard is going to look like, and how to integrate the complicated railyards or other things that you saw when driving somewhere. The thing is there's virtually no limit to what your imagination can do with this program.

This in a nutshell is a thinking man's (person's) program. Your mind is forever doing something when you use Trainz. This is far different than many other programs out there that are nothing more than point and shoot and point and zone-out activities. So welcome to Trainz, a world that will envelope nearly every waking moment once you've pressed your first mouse-click.

John

Thanks, just pasted it into Notepad. I sometimes find it hard to explain just what is the attraction of Trainz.

It's the only computer game (if `game' it is) that my gf has ever taken the slightest interest in. She hasn't tried driving yet, but she likes to watch.

She could be a potential Trainzer though. She was in Carlisle station a few weeks ago, and the Gresley A4 Union of South Africa happened to have pulled in, so she took some pics of it.

No don't bother marvinj, this idiot keeps banner-waving for Kuju on this forum, and it doesn't help our community one bit, just ignore him, he's broken the code of conduct several times already and the moderators won't do anything about his attitude, but us veteran Trainzers will speak up, anyway, welcome to AURAN.
