346 Comes back to life....again

Klinger

The Chicago CTA guy
Took a boatload of pictures of D&RGW #346 while I was at the Museum this weekend. I spent 4 hours loading trains on Saturday, and 6 hours on Sunday doing other things.

here are some pictures that I grabbed while on fire watch over by the 4% grade coming out of the 3 way switch. we are getting all the track around the switch replaced, and the 3 way itself is being moved off the main line (as far as I heard) to the west, to connect to several other tracks that have no access right now to the main line

Backing up onto the turntable. As amazing as it seems, it can actually be pushed by a single person. I would not have believed it if I had not pushed it myself. The hard part is getting it started and stopped. You really have to dig your feet in

Hows your back feeling after pushing that beast around. Its cool to see more NG equipment being restored.

Great shots Klinger! :D One day I need to get out to Golden.

Hopefully this will be back in Colorado behind 346. Taken back in April.

no matter how many times i see it, it is still hard to belive that a locomotive can run in dual gauge, it just looks strange But it is nice to see NG steam equipment restored

Actually we are suppose to be getting that back in 2-3 months. Of course we still need to rebuild the trucks....or Al said we may just take the trucks off of the Grey work car on the hill, whatever is easier

Got a question for you.

Looking at the dual gauge track I noticed that while the TT track is center dual gauge (one gauge within another) in several of the shots the track is three rail.

My question is this:

Is there a special switch or such that diverts the NG train onto the center dual gauge track? Or is there another method of doing this?

yes actually, there is a section set up like a switch frog. the middle track from the dual gauge turns, and causes the narrow gauge trains to move to the center track, while keeping standard gauge trains on the outside rails.

i don't believe I have any pictures of it, I will take one in 2 weeks when we have our work session if I get some time. We have to Paint the Rotary plow, so we may be very busy

i was there 6 years ago, after the missionary ridge fire I miss colorado:'(:'(:'(:'(
I am also jealous, you get to do a dream job, work with steam locomotives
