2009 World Builder or 2010 Engineers ?

Hello all, this is my first post. My Dad was into model railroading late in his life, something he always wanted to do, but didn't have much time left by the time he got around to it. I'm in my late 50's now and not really seeing a model railroad layout on the horizon. So, I have decided to get into railroading via Trainz.

My question is which edition, the 2009 World Builder or the 2010 Engineers edition.

This is my first foray into Trainz, so I am starting with nothing. Therefore, I need an edition that has lots of components to get me started. I am definitely interested in building my own layouts.

My computer hardware is a brand new Windows 7 laptop with
Intel 1.7Ghz Pentium Duo Core2
4 GB of DDR3 memory
nVidia G210M CUDA graphics card with 512 mb VRAM

The reason I'm not sure about getting the "latest" 2010 version is that I'm not sure it has all the components of the 2009 version, which is important to me since I'm starting from scratch.

Your advice is appreciated,
Mike

Personally I would start out with an older version that has simpler features. As well as their are some problems with the newer versions of Trainz. The most popular version of Trainz that everyone agrees on is Trainz Railraod Simulator 2004. You can by TRS2004 here from the Auran Shop.

Cheers,

If I was to buy Trainz at this point in time I would buy 2009 because it is easy to use,has patches available, lots of stuff on the DLS to add to your game and it comes in CD form. I would not buy a DDL for the reason you would not have to make a copy of it or back it up and a CD is much faster and less hassle to install on your PC. Also if something happens you always have your CD available to re-install if need be. If you get 2009 be sure to DL the patches and do a asset data base scan before running the game. It's format is similar to past versions, easy to learn and a stable game. The only down side is that the locomotive sounds are not as real sounding as they could be,but it's a good game overall. 2010 is like 2009 but cooler and if you can get it in CD form I'd go for it but I would not buy a DDL myself. Whatever version you pick you will be a Trainzer for life. Happy Trainz.....Alco_P-A

2009 and 2010 stile does not work most of the time, even with patches. May I say that TRS2004 has more content for it, then any other versions of Trainz ever (True Fact).

TS2010 comes on 2 DVDs and is the latest version of Trainz. Is has all of the content of TS2009 plus. 2009 has 12842 kuids and 2010 has 19007. To me 2010 looks better, runs smoother and runs faster.

TRS2004 is by far the best version of Trainz so far. It works, it's compatible with most properly made assets, it has a simple fast reliable asset management system, the sound is good, it has full support for scenarios, and in most countries it's very inexpensive budget software. No other version has all those features.

When TS2010 is debugged, has a few more service packs released and more native mode content created it may well prove to be better than 04, but not yet.

Many people have reported that they reckon that TS2009 is the most stable version of Trainz yet (it's a bit too soon to judge TS2010). Some folks are still having some issues with these releases, but overall, I'd buy TS2010 (though I've only had it a day), as it has more content, and has all it's routes optimised for Native Mode. Unlike TRS04, it's also still being updated.

Just my 2c.

Paul

p.s. Probably best to avoid TRS06 though, and the Trainz Classics series only come with one or two routes...

Each version of Trainz has its avid supporters. I have been a Trainzer since the very first version, but stopped updating when I got TRS2006 as it is so good, and downloading from the DLS is so easy. I have never had the slightest trouble nor problem, I have created and run some large routes with many trains. In the UK you can buy it for just a few pounds and I expect that is the case in other countries as well, so give it a try at little cost and see how you get on before buying the latest version.

^^^ Yep that's my understanding as well. TS10 definitely does include Surveyor, contrary to Auran's original plan.

John

I have TRS04, 06 and 09. I use TRS04 for route building and TRS06 for running, the graphics are slightly better.

If I had a friend getting into Trainz I would recommend 04. It is a rock solid stable platform and does (almost) everything that later versions do and it can be picked up for pennies in discount bins. If you get bitten by the Trainz bug you can upgrade later....

The reason i wouldn't recommend later versions is that 09 needs at least another service pack which it may or may not get. TRS10 on the other hand needs a service pack or two that it probably will get - eventually...

TS2010 has a service pack already. :) Though that's mostly due to the ATI bug with SpeedTree. I bought TS2010 even though it meant ordering overseas and actually pre-ordering it since it wasn't quite out yet. Yeah, I've crashed it a few times. But then I've probably crashed just about every program I've run on modern computers. I'm a bug magnet.

Edit: Note that buying an older version means you won't have access to DLS content created specifically for later versions. (I know I've seen people who use 04 or 06 posting in threads about content being made for newer versions.)

Since all the TRS2004 content is available to TS2009/10 users I don't understand this statement.

Desktops generally speaking are better than lap tops. You have a dual core cpu so be aware that only TS2009/10 will take advantage of the second core. Performance in native mode TS2010 will be better than any other version of Trainz on your laptop. TS2009/10 also use DXT compression which effectively quadruples your video card memory.

When you purchase Trainz you get access the the Download station, that's the 100,000 plus items available for free. TRS2004 gives you access to TRS2004 and earlier version content, TS2010 gives you access to all the previous versions content on the DLS including all the TS2009 content. TS2010 does flag more errors than earlier versions such as TRS204 but most items (99.9%) run quite happily in compatibility mode and there are moves a foot to clean up the content.

Does that answer your question?

Thanks

TRS2004 scenarios won't run in TS09 or TS10.

A considerable amount of content works in TRS2004 but not in TS09 or TS10 unless the user possesses the advanced skills required to mend it. Some items require additional software to be mended. Some cannot be mended without access to the creator's original source material.

I accept the scenarios won't run but the layouts and models do. I must confess I'm not into scenarios so don't miss them.

There aren't that many items that will run in TRS2004 that won't run in TS2009/10 compatibility mode although they do display errors and warnings in CM2. I note that Blue Star icons for example show a warning in TS2009 but TS2010 seems quite happy with them.

I also accept that if you want the steam loco improvements you need to update or replace some files but that is different to saying they don't work in TRS2010 since they work exactly the same way in TRS204.

On his dual core laptop one major bottleneck is his cpu, in simplistic terms running TRS2004 which effectively turns off half his cpu power seems a little short sighted to me.

I can't speak for computer performance since I don't have 2009/2010 so I'll let the others chime in on that.

Starting fresh, I would probably buy the latest version. Simply to take advantage of the newer graphics and content, provided the bugs are worked out.

For me its Trainz Classics 1 & 2, specifically for the LACK of routes and content in it. I went on a downloading routes kick with 2006 and ended up with over 12GB of stuff I'll never use for routes long since deleted. I'm in the process of weeding that content out and I'm down to "just" 6GB. I also culled through my locos and rolling stock only keeping the ones I like. With TC, I deleted the all JA files in my world folder except Core and Yardmaster and have a fully functioning sim less all the extra content, basically a custom version. The only thing I needed to Tweak were the portals .Now, when I see a route I like I just download the map. If I like it I start replacing the content with my favorites.

On the other hand, if its content you're after, Trainz Railwayz from Merscom is a good deal. I have it and it comes with Classics 1 & 2 and 2006 with SP1. Install TC and copy all the content from 2006 over. I paid $15 for mine, not bad considering you get two full working versions of Trainz. Never tried TC 3 but from what I understand it caters more to the European crowd.

2004 is the favorite it seems. I just have a problem in that everything seems "dark" on my machine. No matter what settings I use it seems like my monitor is dimmed way down. Many people still enjoy ot though.

Any version should bring you plenty of enjoyment. Just need to pick what is right for you.

Well, here we go again with the weekly "What is the most popular version of Trainz?" And the winner is.......
There is no winner because every Trainzer has their own opinion and it is difficult if not impossible to get a consensus on one of these threads. If folks who are planning on buying some version of Trainz would take the time to peruse (aka search) the forum they would quickly realize that every version has its supporters. Even Sarah Pallin has supporters (Note I wrote "has" supporters not wears supporters);)
This old curmudgeon loves his hobby and has come, after some hesitation regarding the newer versions, to like them all. So 777 buy them all and you make a choice and then you can join the legion of supporters for 04 or 06 or 09 or 10.
Have a prosperous New Year everbody.

Version 2009 or 2010?

Just as I was hoping, I've received a treasure trove of information. Thanks to one and all for your responses.

I have decided to jump onto the rails with the lastest version, 2010, although it appears that I would be happy with almost any version.

Looking forward to joining what is obviously a vibrant community.
Mike
