Today marks the 16th anniversary of the SP/UP merger. September 11, 1996 the Surface Board of Transportation announced the two companies would combine and the SP which had been marked as the surviving company was instead denoted as the "Fallen Flag" and the UP would assume all railroad operations. This sealed the fate of the SP and officially marked the end of a 131 year era of the Espee and their reign as the friendliest and most famous company came to an end as the historically rich class I major carrier railroad ceased to exist. Like the ATSF, the SP is gone but not forgotten. You are missed and will be missed sorely. My thoughts and prayers to all who worked for this beautiful company and may you find peace in whatever you do. We can't see your face although I believe you're in a better place.
