10 Arrested by FBI in Malware Crime, Facebook Helps

Some 11 million people were affected by malware that netted the perpetrators some $850 million from people around the world, including Facebook users.

10 people were arrested by the FBI for using the malware Yahos to steal information, including bank accounts, credit cards and other personal data. Venture Beat reports. Facebook’s security force entered the picture after the social network was affected between 2010 and 2012. Facebook users were spammed with links that lead to a video installation. The company provided its users with tools to clean up the botnet named Butterfly. The FBI reports that Facebook helped identify the cause, perpetrators and users affected by the malware.

Venture Beat says that the 10 criminals were arrested from many different countries that included the United States. The FBI as assisted by numerous partner organizations, including forces in the UK, Peru, New Zealand, Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as others.

A statement posted by the FBI recommends that users keep their applications updated, and to use a good anti-virus to scan their computers on a regular basis. They also recommend that personal computers be disconnected from the Internet when they are not in use.
