Now that it is official: In 04/06 a FCT is manditory:mop: :'( :mop:

Lets start a Clubhouse where us 04/06 dinosaurs can all get together to assist one other with 04/06 problem solving, so we don't end up like prehistoric ants trapped in amber.

When a creator uploaded an item for 04/06 to the DLS, they presumably did so because they wanted other 04/06 Registered users to be able to use their creations for free.
Now that 04/06 users can't download from the DLS for free, is it ethically ok for Registered users to now share files by email, so that anyone missing an item from a route or loco ect. is able to obtain it for free as originally intended ?

How do other 04/06 users stand on this issue ?
 
Auran make no charge for the content on the DLS, and they still aren't. They have been giving free ACCESS to the DLS for older programs, in the process giving users bandwidth for which they have been paying. They have now decided that access to that FREE content will have to be paid for unless you have a recent version.

To make it clear, the content is free, access to that content is not free. It could not be any plainer than that.

Yes that's quite clear, it was also quite clear when creators uploaded their stuff to the dls, that NO CHARGE was made at all to access their creations, they were TOTALLY free to other 04/06 'REGISTERED' users.
Auran/N3v are the ones who have 'moved the goalposts' since those creators uploaded, so Auran/N3v are the ones who are breaching the agreement with those creators.
 
There have been multiple threads of complaints about the 04/06 unsupport, and termination of the free access to non-FCT 04/06 users. It is just about worn out and futile to complain.

I placed this thread as a "help" thread so that we could all assist each other with technical difficulties and solutions.

PM's are very welcome.

In my humble opinion, this is not ethically okay. The content that I uploaded to the DLS is not free for members to be sending back and forth to each other. If someone needs my content and they are a registered user, just email me and I'll be glad to send it along.

I'm happy for registered users to share my pre TC content between themselves by e-mail only. Please no uploads to other sites without my express permission, and I may or may not have time to answer e-mail requests for content myself.

I can agree with you in theory, but I believe that in the end, it can lead to slopiness and laziness in who the member sends the file to.

Thank you Paul, rest assured that I will only email a file to someone with the appropriate version registered in their 'Time Line' next to their ID on these forums.

Mike, I understand you concern, creators who are still contactable & willing to supply their files to 04/06 users by email are much appreciated, but there are a few who have now left the game, so cannot provide this good will.
 
I shall say that I agree with what you guys are saying. To be honest with you, I find it all totally unfair! I don't want to have to pay for a first class ticket just to get a few sheds, tracks or houses. To be honest with you guys, I'm appalled! I'm still trying to find the assets for a few things I downloaded before this happened! And I can't when the DLS is telling me to buy a First Class Ticket! If only we had a poll for everyone else's opinions, then we can see if we can make a change to it! I'm still using 2004 and 2006, so I definitely will put my name down for against this whole affair.

This is going to become more of an issue as time passes and it becomes more difficult to get to the freeware on the DLS intended for the community. In all fairness to Auran and despite what their upload agreement says, I suspect that most content was not intended for Auran as much as it was intended for the community. What made the DLS so handy was it's ability to search for dependencies on the DLS and download them when you downloaded an asset.

I realize N3V is trying to run a business and that maintaining the DLS costs money and resources, but I'm afraid that they are hurting themselves by alienating so many members.

Its a good question about what to do with all of the content from inactive members, but I'm of the opinion that it can't be passed around unless the license for that particular piece of content allows it.

This issue will continue to be debated. I'm afraid that it will be without a clear resolution.
