What do each of the build versions correspond too? 3.6, 3.5, 3.4 etc... And, if I'm using TS12, how low should I really go? i.e. are ones like 2.9 and 2.6 safe?

I'm still enjoying driving mode through the current tutorials at the moment. But one thing that I noticed was that when operating a passenger train, it's hard to determine how far down the platform to stop. How do you determine this yourself? Do you just... guess? (Cab Mode, not external view)...
