    Using TransDem for new Route

Here are my notes from creating my first large US route using TranzDEM. I based my work on the above mentioned video. https://forums.auran.com/threads/tranzdem-us-route-import-into-trainz.170481/ Updated: Fix link (use "Here", or copy and past link).

    BNSF ES44/ET44C4

This is an opinion: I think the C4 units are a failed experiment. BNSF thought that they could save a bit of money by eliminating two traction motors (and the associated electrical gear). They though that, when needed, the weight-transfer could compensate for the reduced tractive effort of only...

trainz railroad simulator 2022 platinum edition

Similar here. I installed Trainz 22 PE (build 126273) on a new Windows 11 Home (24H2) laptop with RTX 4050. No issues at all. This was a year ago.

    Advance Approach Display

Probably no good reason, as (for example) BNSF uses both (but calls it Approach Medium). https://signals.jovet.net/rules/BNSF%20Signal%20Rules.pdf CCOR calls flashing yellow Advance Approach, and yellow over yellow Approach Diverging...

Trains through American mountains are often slow.

The slow speeds are generally due to grade and tonnage. Above 20 mph it becomes difficult to stop a heavy train on a 2+ percent grade. Curves further limit the speed those trains can travel. Tracks are expensive to build in mountainous areas. Space is limited and adding sidings or a second track...

Portal Basic issues. I found the problem!

I meant the built-in "Portal", <kuid:-25:1264> Portal (build version 4.6). I created an asset derived from <kuid:-25:1264> Portal. I am wondering if my derived asset has the above problem, or if I should have derived from Portal Basic.

Making sense of the alignment data in track charts

On the newer charts I have (various North American railroads), the curvature is given in degree. The number indicates how sharp a curve is, with a higher number meaning a sharper curve. "... angles noted in these charts represent the angle of deflection" over the section spanned by the 100...

Portal Basic issues. I found the problem!

What is the difference between "Portal" and "Portal Basic"? Does the problem above also affect "Portal"?

ICS Portals for Electro Island emitting trains going at 17 kph

There is a phase where the train emerges from the portal that is not yet controlled by the normal operations logic. That phase probably has a speed limit. I seem to remember that signals and switches have to be a certain distance from the portal to work properly/

    TransDEM Questions

I captured my first experience with TranzDEM in the following thread: https://forums.auran.com/threads/tranzdem-us-route-import-into-trainz.170481/

UP-NS Agree to $85 Billion Merger

I don't think NAFTA is entirely to blame for that. I am on the other side of the continent and the north side of the "line". We lost over half the lumber mills since 2009 (where I have data for), and many more earlier. And we also lost the rail lines where lumber was the main business.

Are American trains slow by modern world standards?

That depends on how you look at it. Specifically regarding speed, they are not great. Even priority intermodal trains have longer transit times than a few decades ago. Here is some average freight train speed data from 2005 (Progressive Railroading): Union Pacific: 21.2 mph BNSF: 24.1 mph CSX...

    basic guide for using Trainz

in Surveyor 2.0 is unintuitive and hard to discover. I have looked it up twice, and still can't remember right now how to do it. It is much more explicit in the traditional Surveyor. BTW, you use the Marquee tool and context menu to add baseboards. You can add multiple at the same time. Short...

    Track position

I used OpenStreetMap (and JOSM) to import the track. https://forums.auran.com/threads/tranzdem-us-route-import-into-trainz.170481/#post-1954603
