Thinking about purchase

Been looking around for a train sim (pc), & trainz 12 looks like a good one. I had MST when it first came out, & remember the cars didn't roll very far on the flat if they were cut off from the engine in motion. Is the physics for trainz 12 more accurate to real cars? Can a controller axis be mapped to a flight sim throttle? I heard some train sims only use the RailDriver controller, KB, & mouse. Thanks for any help.

Hi,

The one thing I would suggest is to by TS12 directly from N3V. Steam has a version out, but please read this first. It was posted by Zec Murphy who is the CSR for N3V.

Our version is the base 'international' edition. This version is then modified to suite the needs/desires of each publisher (Generally language changes, or DRM, depending on the publisher).

In the case of Steam, these have been modified to work with Steam's system. As such, patches can take a lot longer to be released, due to the modifications required for Steam.

There should be no content differences between the 'international' edition, and the Steam edition, except where a newer update may have changed the content.

Yes, Trainz can use KB, Mouse and Raildriver controls.

Most important, check your PC specs for TS12 >>>before<<< you purchase, as there really is NO refund policy from N3V.

You can see the PC specs here:

Scroll down to see the specs.

Hope this helps.

In TS12 I can kick or drop a single or a cut of cars, and they will roll quite a ways, depending on speed at uncoupling, but can be stopped with the handbrake. I think the momentum effect in TS12 is very good. Singles or cuts will also roll away on even the slightest slope if the brakes are not set, and will become runaways.

Somewhere in my TS2006 archives, there is a working hump yard, with functional retarders...don't recall who created it, but it worked very well. It might yet be still on the Download Station. Time to see if I can get it working in TS12.

I have used RailDriver in the past, but now use just KB and mouse. Suppose I should dig out RailDriver and try it with TS12.

I would think that if you have a good flight sim controller, like the better Saitek units, you should be able to use their (Saitek) software to map all TS12 functions to the controller. I use the X52 set in my flight sims, and find it very flexible, so perhaps trying it with TS12 is another rainy day project.

I strongly suggest you buy a retail version...either thru N3V directly, or a recognized distributor. The Steam version seems to create many headaches for a lot of users. Plus....Auran has some great holiday pricing right now!

As for computer specs, don't expect great performance if your system just barely meets the minimum specs as defined by the game....you need a pretty powerful rig to run with all the bells and whistles, but if you have the horepower....it's a grand experience.

Hi JohnMac, yes a drop or hump operation is why I asked, thank you. I saw the youtube clip of the hump yard, very slick. Also thanks for the clips Phil.

If this is your first copy of Trainz, I would have to say TS2010.

-The dependency game can be maddening at first.
-Error checking is a pain. Have to learn from scratch how to repair assets. Kind of hard to do while still learning the CDP, this asset has dependencies, which has dependencies, which may have errors, which you have to download a set of programs to fix........ All while taking a crash course in breaking down what constitutes an asset.
-TS2010 will give you the option of running in Compatibility Mode to ignore those errors while learning the rest. Nothing worse than downloading an asset, scratch your noodle to figure out it has dependencies and then find some are broken with no way to fix them in game. Can be frustrating.

Dave.......

Dave, the op has never seen any Trainz version so will have no idea what your going on about.
As a new starter I would recommend buying Trainz 12 from the Auran shop as it has the most upto date physics and better graphics with less strain on your system than the earlier versions. It has some very good routes and stock to get you started out of the box with a world class forum to back it up.

And he will have no idea what all the content errors he will get will mean at all either. At least with 2010 he can use compatibility mode as he learns. Put yourself in a new user's spot with the newer versions.

Dave......

I appreciate all the feedback. From what I could find it appears usb controllers are not supported in the game. I realize a profile could made, but it's not the same as recognized axis setup.

Thanks,

Can't help you on the controller issue but I can tell you that purchasing TS12 via Amazon US was painless (no Steam) other than the download time (several hours). However, purchasing from N3V can get you some very nice bundles for the same price or less.

Well worth the price IMO, I've spent a minimum of an hour a day playing with it since I bought it.

Well I got TS12 last night. I'll get into it today. Dave, please don't say "told you so"...;). It's just not in me getting a 10 when a 12 is available. Besides I wanted the Mohave route. :)

If you mean me, I would never say that. I hope you enjoy it. My suggestion was just that, a suggestion. As long as you're aware you will need to learn to fix errors in some content, it's all good. Just pointed out a source of possible frustration for a new user.

Congratulations on your purchase!

Feel free to post if you have any questions.

Thanks JCitron. J/K sparky15, I know you wouldn't have said that, should have left that out. I appreciated you comments.
