Screenshot of the Week: 6/28/10 to 7/5/10

Hi everybody and welcome to Screenshot of the Week. The theme for this week is fallen flag railroads and next week we shall give one lucky railroad the ability to be submitted in a contest all on its own. So keep sending them in and please list them, so before the end of the week, I can open a special voting section for that. Plus, I have extended it a day so for us American who celebrate July 4th can get an extra day. And the rest of the world, can submit more. This week will be a first in Screenshot of the Week history. I want you to (if you can) post up to 5 images (if you want to) and if you can, make it like a little story. I know WCL does and boy, his work. Okay, good luck.

I think this counts...

It's 1968, and the last Coal train, made up of empties from Moreno coal shute, is climbing up Cumbres pass for the final time. K-36 No. 484 is on her last run as well. Out of flue time, she will be pushed behind the Alamosa roundhouse by MRS-1 #82 tonight. The rain seems to add to the solemn task at hand, and the engineer and fireman remain silent, the reality of what is happening all to real. Only the whistle seems to give the engineer his chance to voice his sorrows...

The train approaches Cumbres...

And rumbles across one of the many trestles.

the train blasts through Mud tunnel.

and rumbles off into the night, whistle mouring the end of an era.

Long live the Rio Grande...

I don't really know what FALLEN FLAG really means but I hope these are OK...

EH, rbar, Fallen Flag means a railway that was either shut down or merged out of existance. For instance, the D&RGW was merged into the UP. The Nickel Plate (which is the engine you have as your avatar...unless you knew that already:confused: ) was merged into the Norfolk and Western.

Yes, the term does mean a railroad that has been shut down, or merged. I believe the term comes from when the Wabash was merged(or bought i dont know) with the Norfolk & Western. The Wabash's symbol was a flag. Fallen Railroad, fallen flag.

I believe that since the locomotive below is still in it's warbonnet paint, and that Heritage II is hard to find anymore, that this counts as a fallen flag story.

DISPATCHER: Dispatcher to QRExtra1, come in.
QREXTRA1: QRExtra1, in.
DISPATCHER: Approaching speed restricted zone, mile post 102a. You'll be going from, uh, 30 to 25, and to 15 following through, is that correct?
QREXTRA1: Correctly displayed.
DISPATCHER: All right, take it easy, slow, and nice, you hear?
QREXTRA1: Over and out.

QRExtra1 approaching 25 to 15 miles per zone. Note derail. That track is being redone with the station currently be demolished for rebuilding.

QRExtra1 in 15 miles per hour speed zone. That old water tower is coming down too.

Frieght 218, passes commuter train 09 on June 30, 1988. I had gone through alot to get these shots. First, I was out here on my 16th birthday. I skipped seeing my girlfriend this morning, and somehow got away from home when it was storming outside. But I knew this day was my last chance. Today was the last day the SP would be running commuter service here. With no car, I was only able to get it leaving our town. At first, I was 5 minutes late acording to the schedule, and I though I would have missed it. But luckly, it was waiting for a frieght to come through. Here are the shots that I got from that day. I am still amazed that I somehow kept the lens clear...

Our day comes to an end in Hermliegh, at the station an Amtrak train awaits the passage of the freight, once the freight passes through, the passenger train will take to the rails heading toward Snyder.
