Call them ugly, or like I call them beautiful, this thread is started to share information both prototype and model on these rare diesels.

Bangor and Aroostock #52 and 56, new home

Seems these two are destined to always be together!

Following there time on the Bangor and Aroostock, they were sold to to the janesville and southeastern where they hauled passengers in the 1980's they were bought by a collector named Glenn Monhart .
He tragicaly died in 1998 at age 51 in a car wreck and the two went to a side track near Green Bay Wisconsin, at the National Railroad Museum about 2001. There they rotted.
Then I saw this!

EMD BL2 diesels pass through Waukesha, Wis., today, on their way to Arizona Eastern Railroad. Photo by: TRAINS: Andy Cummings
CHICAGO - A variety of motive power ranging from E8s to SD9043MACs is headed for Iowa Pacific Holdings short lines, President Ed Ellis told TRAINS News Wire today. In addition, the company is lining up several dome cars, some of which will serve on the Denver to Winter Park, Colo., Ski Train, which Iowa Pacific plans to restore to service.

Ellis said his company is selling 10 B39-8 diesels currently serving on Iowa Pacific's Permian Basin Railways. Taking their place will be 10 SD9043MAC locomotives from CIT group, to be split between Arizona Eastern and San Luis & Rio Grande. Additionally, two rare Electro-Motive BL2 diesels are on their way to Arizona Eastern for service on a local where the SD90MACs will be undesirable.

The company is also in the process of purchasing four ex-Chicago & North Western E8 diesels, of which at least one will serve on the Ski Train when it's restored. For his passenger services, Ellis is also acquiring four full-length dome cars that had recently served on excursion trains for Holland America in Alaska. Three are ex-Santa Fe; one is ex-Great Northern. Of the four, two are slated to serve on the Ski Train, one on the San Luis & Rio Grande, and one at Mount Hood Railroad in Oregon.

The pair of BL2s will be serviced at Permian Basin's Bixby, Ariz., shops, for 30 to 60 days after their arrival before being pressed into service. The pair passed from Fond du Lac, Wis., to the Chicago area today, and are slated for interchange.

I have wrote to the company to find out their intentions for the two and will post here when I learn something

Based on the original plans of the BL-1. Not the final results. When found, usually sells for about 50 - 80 dollars on ebay.

UNK Maker 2000,
A Gem, True in all details. About 300 to 400 on Ebay.

HO Plastic
AHM 1972
Also based on original plans, not the final. Slightly off scale, Chunky is how some describe them. a little to wide. 10.00 and up on ebay.

Proto 2000
Quite nice , but the bogeys are wrong. many complaints on the first batch of them as they are real gear eaters. NWSL makes a nice replacement set and when polished and installed, a real smooth gem and a slow runner too. On emay new from 50 and up.

N Scale

Hey, I have a Proto 2000 version of the BL-2. Personally, the BL-2 is my top locomotive! My second is this beauty:

This, is my kind of thread.

A bit of information.
BAR BL2s were purchased with special modifications for use in snow plow service.

Unlike the BL1 that was eventually converted into a BL2 with electric MU cables, most BL2s could MU with more than one other locomotive. It all depended on whether or not it had a heavy, or light frame.

Once these two ex BAR BL2s are up and running, there will be 4 running BL2s in existance, with two of them, BAR 54 and WM 82(?) on toursit lines.

BAR BL2s originally came in the paint scheme that engine 557(American railfan) is in. They were originally numbered 55#. With the addition of the GP38s to the roster, the extra 5 was dropped, and they were painted blue.

BAR 554 and 557 are pretty special locomotives. 557 is the American Railfan locomotive, and was painted back to its as delivered paint scheme. 554 is the only BL2 to wear the Orange, Silver and Black, as well as the only BL2 to wear all 3 colors. The reason? Both locomotives were broadsided by an out of control logging truck, and were badly damaged in the derailment. Upon rebuilding, they got different paint.

BAR 554 was also involved in some other crash where the details are unknown, but there were full crew fatalities unfortunately.
