Will this new PC cope with Trainz?

I have looked into overclocking but can't get ntune to work with Vista 64bit. Has anyone had this problem, is there a solution?

Well, after a lot of searching on the web I have managed to install Riva Tuner and have overclocked my 9800GTX+. core up to 800 and mem. to 1200. Not up to max. but I want to play safe!
Has anyone used Riva Tuner, as I would like to know if there is a way to have the o/c come on automatically when going into a game? John.

1. Both Window 9x and Windows 2000 store settings in system dependent registry keys. It means that your *.REG files may work incorrectly on another PC or even on your PC after reinstalling a display driver. RivaTuner uses macro names to export and import presets so they will always work correctly.
2.
*.REG files cannot remove entries from registry. Presets can do it.
3. Preset files can contain driver version dependent and hardware dependent registry entries.

You can use pre-created presets (located in "Presets" folder) or create your own presets via the built-in registry editor. The presets are integrated in the Explorer shell so you can just click any *.RTP file within the Explorer in order to import preset data. You can also run a preset via RivaTuner's launcher by associating a preset with a launcher's item. Follow the next steps in order to associate a preset with a launcher's item:

1. Open the "Launcher" tab and click the "Add new menu item" button. Menu item editor dialog will appear.
2.
Type a name for new menu item. For example, "Apply quality optimized settings".
3. Check the "Associated preset" option then select your preset and close the menu item editor.

New menu item will appear. Now you can launch the preset associated with this menu item by double clicking it. When RivaTuner is minimized to tray you can also launch it from the context menu (right click RivaTuner's tray icon in order to open it).

Apparently you can associate Riva Tuner to turn itself on with any program.:)

Thanks for your interest Euphod. I am very busy with other things today so have not much time to try to understand all your advice. You are more computer knowledgeable than myself so some of what you say goes over my head! However, I now can right click the Rivatuner tray icon and have a choice of "Standard" or "Gaming" modes, I just have to remember to switch before opening Trainz! The gpu temp. is in the 30's when o/c, I presume this is quite acceptable? This is with fan on 70%. John.

I have since found that I cannot change when there is more than one mode in task bar icon. At the moment I have "standard " mode set to install on boot up and if I want to go into Trainz I can then change to "Game" mode through taskbar. John.

I have done some more o/clocking (something I have not tried before!) and have raised the FSB from 333 to 400, this gives me 2x3.6 GHz instead of 2x3.0. I don't want to go higher than this even though others have gone over 4.0GHz!! The CPU temps. have remained in the mid 20's although I have not yet checked them in game.
The GPU o/clock I have left as it was, core clock 819, shader clock 2031, memory clock1201, ( standard clock was 745, 1848, 1100).
When I have time later I will test frame rates in Trainz. John.

I have done a fair amount of overclocking in my day, you know, between drowning kittens and stealing pension checks out of mailboxes:eek: , and I have found that it doesn't pay off too much, except in certain situations, and with certain processors.

So you don't think it is worth it for Trainz? I have yet to do proper tests but on first look I seem to be getting about 7-8 more fps in Angelah's WCL after this o/clock of the cpus. John.

I have just run WCL, CPU temp. quickly rose to 32 but after 15 mins temp. was still constant at 32. So far so good! Av. fps over this stretch was 50. John.

Well, for certain situations and certain CPU's it IS worthwhile. You say you are getting 7-8 more FPS, but what were you getting before hand? If 7-8 FPS crosses the line of...say...24 FPS, then it's worthwhile, if it is just adding 7-8 FPS to and FPS rate already at 60, then is it worthwhile? Maybe if you're a humming bird!:)

On the section of WCL I was running the fps varies greatly, with my old pc it struggled below 10 fps in the most heavily built up parts but reached the 20's in others. It is these low fps stretches that need the boost! If I boost the average fps over this stretch from 43 to 50 it must help these low frame sections? John.

Hi John,

Glad that you are happy with your PC Specialist supplied computer. I purchased my present one about 2.1/2 yrs ago. Rather low-end now. Must open the cupboard and find the bank manager. Perhaps he can loan me some of his bonus!

PC Spec. took about 3 weeks to deliver for me as I recall. Looking forward to more reports. Go on... make me jealous:p.

How is TC3 running?

Sellick

Hi Sellick, yes I found PC Specialist very good, would definitely use them again. I have not used TC3 much lately, but will have a go tomorrow if I have time. John.

Great John. See if you can get through Carlisle Central Area without stutters.
Don't s'pose you know where that RBS chappie is hiding. He might give me a sub:hehe:

I will have to be quick with this, it has been a busy day! Yesterday my 6yr old crt monitor gave up the ghost so I quickly ordered a 22in IiyamaTFT, about £175, from Dabs and it arrived lunchtime today.
So I have been setting this up, in between looking after my invalid wife, which is why I have not had much time for Trainz today!
However I did run an A1 for 5mins out of Carlisle using TC3 and averaged 29 fps in Jetlog. I didn't watch it all the way through but leaving Carlisle station it seemed to run quite smooth. John.

I ran yesterday's test again with resolution in Options set to monitor's optimum (1920x1080), all sliders on max. except fog which were on zero. Also, shadows on.
This time I averaged 25 fps in Jetlog, I presume the drop is due to running in higher resolution. But still not bad frame rate and it was quite smooth to watch. Don't forget that this 5 mins. run is mainly in built up approaches to Carlisle !!! This new monitor is great, the extra width is very handy especially in my phography, panoramas fit the screen just right. John.
PS I have just realised that both TC3 tests were done without o/clocking the 9800 GTX+!
