Hi, just raising a point really
Why are there so many blank baseboards on the East Main Line Route? They dont really serve a purpose apart from dargging my laptop to a slow crawl....

Hi

I believe they were added so that you can't see the edge of the baseboards when in driver and helps with the illusion of depth. It's unlikely that they did it just to slow your laptop down.

aka Distant Mountains, or well, distant fields in the case of 90% of the ECML!

It's a technique most contemporary route builders adopt - detailed(ish) scenery out to 1500 - 2000 metres from the track line then a neutral painted texture out to 5 or 6km. As Brian states this avoids the immediate destruction of the suspension of disbelief, when you catch a glimpse of a honeycomb edged end of baseboard (tile).
