Looking for Trainzmap

I have been trying to obtain a copy of Trainzmap. All the download sites that I have visited do not seem to be working.

If anyone can help me I would be most grateful.

(I do know that it only works in TRS2004)

No it works fine with TRS2006. Also sort of works with TRS2010, with add on Trainzmap Viewer.(larger layouts don't work) But have not got it working at all with TS12.

It is an extra included TRS2006, and used to work on a Vista PC ... now on Vista & Windows7 PC's, the program crashs, and closes when R clicking on a track, to get properties, and change track.

I ran it as administrator and allowed it through my firewall, still it does nothing but staightens track ... and crashs in any other feature.

For future reference, TrainzMap is still available online, thanks to the Internet Archive Wayback Machine. Take a look at page 4 at this link: http://web.archive.org/*/http://www.vistamaresoft.com/*, and look for the "vistamaresoft.com/public/trainzmap034setup.exe" listing (which is for TrainzMap v0.3.4, which appears to be the latest version available at the Internet Archive). Click that listing, and you will find yourself at a big calendar. Find the button for JUL 21 and click it, and there you go. ;) I just installed it successfully doing that.
The Internet Archive Wayback Machine rules! :D ;)

Regards.

The TrainzMap installer installs to C:\Program Files\VistaMare\TrainzMap by default. It is designed for TRS2004 and earlier which use the World\Dispatcher\Downloads folder for most downloaded content and the World\Custom folder for other custom content. The World folder also contains the .ja files for built-in content. In comparison, TRS2006 and later use the Trainz Asset Database, etc., so there is a definite difference there. Installing in to the Trainz bin folder does not sound like a good idea to me.

If your TrainzMap installation is somewhere in the Program Files folder (e. g. the default installation folder above), then make sure that you run TrainzMap.exe as administrator (and Trainz/CMP as well), so that it can save its settings directly to its installation folder.

Are you telling TrainzMap to open the .trk file in the route's folder? (assuming you opened the route for edit in CMP, and then manually pointed TrainzMap to that route's .trk file (go File -> Open and choose the Browse button to manually browse for it).)

Regards.

Nope, it is for TRS2004 and earlier. But bolivar says that it works with TRS2006, so who knows.

My C:\Program Files\VistaMare\TrainzMap folder contains these files:
  • icons15b.bmp
  • icons15c.bmp
  • icons30b.bmp
  • icons30c.bmp
  • icons60b.bmp
  • icons60c.bmp
  • iconsscr.bmp
Do you have these?

Regards.

Yes all the files are there ... it has never worked, and never has been able to go to track properties.

I went manually to an opened routes, trk file ... and it scans assets, then aborts ... says it can not find any Trainz track ... lol

The Built In TRS2006 TrainzMap at least shows a route ... but it then crashs when R clicking on a track to change in properties.

Trainz route file formats have changed since the days of TRS2004. While the file type names are still the same, .gnd, .obs or .trk, their internal structure is not. A program that was written for specific file format versions will usually not be able to read later versions of these files. It may be still capable of formally navigating through the contents of a file, but it can not interpret any new or modified features.

That's the case with Trainzmap. Original version worked with TRS04 map files. A new version came out to support the changes with TRS06 map files (and database access). I don't believe it was ever updated after that. Somebody wrote a companion program for it to work with TS10 track and object files and as bolivar says it kind of works.

From my point of view the biggest problem is the current lack of any support from auran/n3v. For UTC and TRS04 they provided some info to content creators on the map file formats used by Trainz. With TRS06 they responded to some questions. Since then - not much of anything. You can hardly expect much if any 3rd party help when past history says it's pretty futile - it's been maybe 6 years since they made any update available and yet changes were made with practically each new edition. Maurizio had some help from auran with the TRS06 edition of Trainzmap but for some reason that relationship ended.

The only piece of 3rd party software dealing with mapfiles that has kept pace is TransDem. I suspect geophil's on fluent terms with his hexeditor but still he's at auran's mercy with every new edition and patch they put out.

It says that it is supposed to. It also says that it only works with TRS2006 SP1 (and TRS2004 and earlier, of course), and not with pre-SP1 TRS2006.
