Hadn't really thought of that, but I'll put one together.

I haven't calculated the length yet. I'll get around to that when I can.

Here's that map of the combined routes. I haven't actually joined them yet on my machine, but it should work okay. I have the track elevations at the joining boards at the same elevation.

 Boy am I Dumb! Thanks for the map. I can't believe where I was trying to connect the two layout at. Gees.

Nope, it won't work. Thought i'd done it wrong, but the merge point has about 50+ feet cliff between the Grandville Portal and the Ashland Central V2 track. Sorry Leeferr. Any advise? I know, I know - Contract a very large bulldozer. lol

Sorry, I guess I should have tried it first myself. I believe that we may have to insert one board between the two layouts or once they're merged, do a little landscaping. I'll try to do better with my next merge. I've never tried it before.

Could change that portal to a tunnel and have it come out into the Ashland Central v2 layout. Don't know if i'm talented enough to doer myself, But might give it a try. I can alway delete and start over:D

I merged them okay. I could have deleted the portal and put a tunnel through as you suggested, but I just branched off on the Sherwood Mtn side and put a tunnel through to join the track on the Ashland Central. Then I did a little terrain smoothing, copying and pasting with some of the textures and it was done. Took me about 15 minutes.

Tried lowering the terrain, but that was a bomb. Couldn't get the ground level using the terrain stuff. No Talent i guess. Looks like a tunnel might do it as you did. Will try later on tonight or tomorrow. Will let you know how i duz.

Could you show a screenie of the tunnel entrance on the Sherwood Mtn RR side, if you have some time. The one i tried to run combined with the portal, and was a mess. Had to delete and start over.

Sure, I'll put one together of each tunnel entrance. Maybe it will help.
Will post when I get it together.

just wondering if you got it going okay. I'm thinking of starting another layout to merge with these, but I'll try to do a better job at it next time. Just for curiosity, I ran a train from Highfield to Flatrock last night and it took about 1 hour 40 minutes at speed limits. It could make for some really long operating sessions, but being retired, it's only time.

November 22nd, 2006, 02:32 PM
just printed the photos you provided but haven't had the time to put in the tunnel yet. Busy week, ailing mother, ailing me. I'm retired as well, but I'm working more than when i was working, if you know what i mean

Anyway, i'll try to get to it before the weekend.

Looking forward to your addon layout.

Don't be down on yourself at all. I couldn't come anywhere clost to what you've done. That's why I downloaded your layouts.

Have a good turkey day!

thanks for the compliment. I do layouts because I really enjoy doing them. It's probably my favorite part of the game. Creating another 100 board layout is quite time consuming, so once I start, it may be 4 - 6 weeks before it's ready for upload and that could be optimistic with the holidays coming on.
Happy Thanksgiving Jack and all Trainzers out there.
Mike

PS: I've been creating some sessions for the Ashland Central V2 and I keep running into a problem of the game crashing about 50% of the time when I drive a train through Friendsville. Don't have the problem anywhere else on the layout, just on the approach to Friendsville from the south. Have you noticed the same problem? It may be a content issue although TrainzObjects hasn't indicated any problem, too many splines in the area or a problem with my RAM or Video card. I've got 2GB of RAM, so that shouldn't be the problem. Got me baffled, but I'm trying to isolate it.

Just finished the tunnel. Not a bad job for my first try. Will put up a screen or two as soon as i can.

Checked out Friendsville and noticed alot of cache loading at the spot. Friendsville has quit a bit of stuff. Don't know if the buildings are low poly or what, but that could be it. Didn't crash, but cached alot

Something weird happened before dinner - Lost all the tunnels and bridges. They came back when i reloaded the layout - Weird, huh. That could be a glitch and your crash could be the same.

I've seen alot of route buildings and Poly count is the number one concern

See ya

Cheers

Jack

Yeah, I've noticed a lot of cache loading in the Friendsville area also. I haven't checked the poly count of the buildings in the area, but I've built cities before that didn't have as much caching as this place does. I just got through adjusting my performance setting to reduce texturing a little and decrease the distance drawing and it didn't crash on me. No other problems anywhere except there. Watertown and Blackwood takes a little caching, but nothing major.

By the way, I'm glad you managed to get the two routes merged.

I don't understand that. The tunnels are built-in content as far as I can recall.

How far is the new layout progressing? It will be a good addition to "Ashland/Sherwood" as I call the merged route.

It's on the download station. There are two versions, but the latest one is Ashland Central V2.
Kuid 262137:100406

Since uploading, I've noticed a couple of problems with some the track switches. There's about a half dozen on the route that show the wrong direction with the junction help errors. I've tried to fix them, but to no avail except the one on the east end of the wye east of Edison Power. I've deleted it and relaid it and it works. It seems that in laying the junction, the junction rails actually cross. It appears to turn right when you can see that it turns left and then crosses back over the rails to the right. I didn't catch it before the last upload, so you can fix it yourself if you want. The other turnout problems are a bit more puzzling. I've zoomed in on them and can't see any problems with them. Once you learn where they are, you can work around them. If I can figure them out, I'll upgrade and upload a revised version.
I haven't been doing this a very long time, so please forgive my errors.
Enjoy.

I don't know if you've had a bad download or what. I haven't had any other comments like this about it. I've had some emails from a few members telling me how much they enjoy the route. Have you run TrainzObjects to see if it shows any missing content. As a last resort, you might try deleting the route and downloading again. File size may be too large for me to email you the cdp direct.

It's not too difficult to get the Ashland Central V2 route and the Sherwood Mtn RR route merged together. Merge the west end of the Ashland Central route where the track ends west of the lakes that are to the NW of Lafayette to the Sherwood Mtn route at the north end of Grandville. It will require that you construct a tunnel to join the tracks of the two routes though.
Enjoy the routes, I have.
