This is not meant to be anything, I was just learning by trial and error on gmax. I got to this point and realised it looks a little like a mini class 50 :p
*EDIT*
This is as far i have got with this. I spent about 4hrs on it, learning all the way!

DSB Litra MY 1101 - something for the GM fans.
This NOHAB portrays its original 1954 "off the assembly line" configuration. This model will be one of the most accurate ever presented in Trainz. It is built using original 1:10 NOHAB plans and extensive photo and tape measure research, which means all the little differences will be present as the individual locomotives are released.

WEN I'm not sure there's any need for that. I think that's actually quite a nice little shunter and to be 1) honest and 2) more positive, I think it's an improvement on Paul's (very numerous!) previous releases. Everyone has their own standards; some choose to create a lot of models in quick succession and release them all, others choose to spend months if not years on a model and never release it. It is up to each individual to choose what they do with their models and whether or not to charge for them. If people want models and are willing to pay then let them pay.
Anyway back on topic, not a render but that's what you get for using gmax and not having the willpower to install rendering plugins :D

Tadaa! :D The http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NZR_DC_class (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NZR%20DC%20class) is a locomotive made by General Motors, Canada. They started off as the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NZR_DA_class. 85 of the DAs were rebuilt into DC, 80 by Clyde Engineering of Australia, and 5 themselves at Hutt Workshops.

Okay, I've cheated somewhat with this one. She's originally Barn700's payware model, though I'd purchased the gmax off him :)
I've basically been replacing few parts of the mesh, mainly concentrating on the textures, moving the rivets to the textures, etc.
The lighting effects are on the actual textures, I've been doing my best to get a realistic look.
Thanks again to Barn :)

Nice, but if you really had a budget of €120,000, then I'm sure one of the first things you'd do would be to buy something a bit more beefy, like 3dsmax or maya...
You haven't used Blender, have you? It can do everything those can do, as well as fluid simulation, soft bodies, etc. It has a built-in game/physics engine for recording physics or making full-fledged games. It also is more hotkey-based than other programs, making it much faster to model with. The built in raytracer can do very good renderings, and Yafray (Yet another free raytracer[included]) can do photorealistic (will make better example later) renderings:
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u300/do_not_eat/SuspensionBridge.jpg
It's free and open-source, and constantly developing. The latest version has digital sculpting tools as well.
(If I had a budget of €120,000, I'd go out and buy a better computer [Mac Pro - 8 cores now:eek:] to run Blender[and Trainz:D])

Nah, Blender is a fine modeling program (and we can agree exactly which ones are not :D)
Blender is a fine modeling program, however when weighing the options of which to learn, which is easier in the end, and which could be more useful in the future. I work with 3DS MAX. Sure the price tag is an issue, but college 3DS courses help a lot :D

Be aware that GMax will not display your textures in all their glory. The resolution it uses is pretty low. Try exporting the model and taking a look in Trainz and you may find it looks fine.

If you take a look in the preferences you can increase the resolution in gmax and have a general play about with the settings, however the textures will always look better in TRS than they do in gmax.

Corris Locomotive no 1.
This is a small 2ft 3in gauge loco from the Corris Rly in Wales. It's depicted as originally built in 1868.
At the moment this is an MSTS project but, no doubt, some trainz NG fans will realise that with a certain amount of rebuilding this model will make the basis for another more famous loco on a nearby well known NG railway in Wales. This will certainly be released in Trainz format.

Hi Chris
Truespace was my first introduction to 3D modelling- I started using it at version 2 and at various points in time versions 3, 4 and (I think) 5 were given away free on magazine cover discs. It is a capable 3D modelling, rendering and animation package although the interface is quirky to say the least. I don't find the vertex or uvw editing tools anything like as easy as they are in gmax, but the rendering is pretty good. One of the things I didn't like about truespace is the fact that it doesn't regard selection (of an object, vertex or anything else) as a positive action- if you make a mistake when selecting a load of vertices you have to go back and start afresh (this may be different in later versions), whereas in gmax you can undo a selection. My Great Eastern signal box and station elevations were modelled and rendered in truespace and then used as textures for the gmax model. I might do the same with the Watlington station model if I can find the original file...:o
If you can get your hands on one of the free versions it's worth a look but the price for the full version 7.5 is now $595, which isn't too bad as professional 3D packages go, but a lot to spend if you don't get on with the interface.
[edit: you can buy truespace from http://www.caligari.com/]
Cheers

Very nice model Kev!
@ Sparky123456: Maybe this is just me but I would highly recommend Blender3D. (Unless, that is, if you are only looking at precision modeling)
Blender will export .3ds files to import into GMAX if needed (though I have yet to get it to work correctly).
Plus it's quite fun to work with! :D

Chris... Can i ask you something...

Hi affe. You need to create a false room around the object, preferably with curved edges. Then add a skylight to the scene. You then need to go to the render ing stage, and have a fiddle with the advanced lighting settings, until you find something that suits you. There are a few tutorials out there that will help, I'm using them :).
Now then...why did I choose such a difficult shape for this new car design......(All curves, awful to try and model).

Couple from me - the mesh was originally made by jdtech who passed it onto Junior_B for completion, I'm just tidying it up and adding bits of detail to it. I've re-done a few areas such as the cab roof, the body sides and the rear gangway & exhaust, and have just added the handrails to the doors :)
For those wondering: Yes, they are based on a converted bus.

Why do people always re-invent the wheel? Simple. There's always some way to make it better. Just because we already have one doesn't mean it can't be made over.
Take this for instance (I posted this render a page or two back but it's been re-uploaded/improved)
http://trainkid4449.googlepages.com/GP40Hood.jpg
Ok as far as I know there are 2 GP40's available.
Norfolksouthern's GP40-2 (great model but nearly 23,000 polys)
Joram24's ex-payware GP40 (another great model but re-skins are limited and poly count is nearly 19,000)
Now mine, 5,487 polys, and plus I can add as many details/options as I want (and I'm not telling what this puppy has in store). I may be re-inventing the wheel but I'm making it smoother. :p
P.S. Norfolksouthern and Joram's models are great I have nothing against them.

I think I've figured out a new way to get gmax files into 3ds (at least I haven't seen it documented anywhere; it's not the quake gamepack method). It takes a while to setup the first time but after that it's a five-step process. It has its shortfalls like many things but as you can see the mesh is intact bar a few smoothing group issues.

What is that from TC?
Because as far as I know We only have a couple of P42's from Digital round house and my god if those didnt look like candy I dont know what did.
Wether is from TC or not I think that looks great, Im not to sure about those bogeys...But great job who ever did that. Nice textured on lights and airvents, looks very low poly too
Cheers, Mike
Hi Mike
At risk of being sniped at again, the locos were built for TC as a favour for Lance as he asked me if I could do them. I'd not done a US diesel before (other than texturing one of prjindigo's NW2s), so it was a good challenge for me.
Mind you they were done in very short time frames, and I wanted to stick to the CCG guidelines fairly rigidly with poly counts, so hence I went all out on the texturing. I also tried to make them skin friendly, so if anyone wanted to do Amtrak Ph3 or 4, they could be done fairly easily (the NH and MN executive skins were done in only a couple of hours in Photoshop).
The bogies were done from photos and a couple of cruder line drawings, but I think they are OK. From what I can tell, they are not simply the normal P40/42 bogies, but have been modified somewhat (and not only just adding the third rail equipment). Have a look in the Trainz Classics thread if you want to see a couple of other screenies, or pick up a copy of TC to see them for real.
Good luck with your P32 and sing out if you need any pics as I have a heap.
Cheers

Dear Tony, I'm sorry for snapping out at you, it was rude and inconsiderate, How ever the actions of what we call members of this forum in the past few years have been building up. Thanks my friends on this forum I got over it and was encouraged and pushed to continue what I love doing, modeling trains. I have been told by many people who have already gotten their copy of TC, that your model looks a lot better (they say it doesn’t look like an Auran model) hahaha. The fact that you made it easily re-skinable was very considerate and running them behind my p32s, or in a group at the yard will provide the variety and less stress on the computer that’s always helpful to make TC a better running simulator.

Hi Mike
It wasn't you, but one of your fellow USLW members. I see from your latest screenie you are still going on with your P32 which is great. Just a comment if I may, I don't think the front is quite that rounded looking at the prototype pics. It tends to be fairly straight from the radius joining the side to the front that then proceeds to the join in the centre as per below

Thanks tony, I kept seeing that and thinking to myself it looks odd, turns out that the front Edge is in the right spot but the fact that I chamferd those edges to the left and right of it to much, it makes it seem so round.
Now the pain will be to fix it haha

Very nice work, especially for a first attempt.
However, I must point out one mistake that is quite often made so don't feel bad about it. Your cranks are at 180 degrees to each other, they should be 'quartered' that is 90 degrees/270 degrees between the two. The reason is simple. In real life, if a loco built like this stops with the coupling rods in line with the cylinders that loco would never start without being pushed.
Cheers

I was SO concerned about it, and still got it wrong? :'(
I didn't understand WHAT you were trying to say above, (90/270 IS 180 degrees apart!) so I went to the Generals web page where she is in the museum, and WHAT DID I FIND?? You were CORRECT!! So I'll have to fix that too! Thank you for pointing that out. Will be corrected soon.

Unique in design, and able to produce a whopping 7,000kW (9,510hp), the Eurotunnel Class 9 (commonly referred to as "Le Shuttle") is the largest locomotive to ever operate in the UK and is of the most powerful in the world. Due to its size and unusual Bo-Bo-Bo wheel arrangement, it is restricted to operating on the Channel Tunnel infrastructure and cannot travel by rail outside of these areas. As the name suggests, these beasties haul frequent shuttle services at 100mph between England and France, transporting cars, motorbikes, coaches and heavy goods vehicles on purpose-built oversized transporters.
And I'm going to be bringing them to TRS :)

Found some stuff that I did in leocad a while back last night. Thought I might have a go at rendering it :)
This is the result, please note that this was the first item that I created in leocad (And I did build it in real lego as well) so not everything is lined up.

Interesting. All I can say is that it is a little short. Every loco in Lego is about 6 bricks tall starting at the wagon plate.

Actually, that was a custom one I made for myself. It is based on a loco that actually runs on broad gauge, so to get it to look right I had to make it a little shorter :)

Ah, interesting, Perchpole. I have something very similar in the pipeline:
Tommy -
They say great minds think alike!
The community has waited so long for one of these wagons that I'm sure there'll be plenty of room for two!
;)
Backyard -
I build all of my models in 3DS Max. I then export the entire object into Gmax and then export it again into TRS. The process is a right royal pain in the you-know-what! That said, I've done it so often that I'm used to it now.

You will need the payware version of SketchUp to export .3Ds to GMAX and from there to Trainz.
But... as easy as SketchUp is to use I highly recommend you learn and use GMAX. It'll save you time, hair, and headache in the long run.
Cheers,

I know I will get flamed for this, but to be honest I ignore flames anymore
if your a route builder, and you need buildings, signs, and other static objects that have no speical features (sound, smoke, other effects) Sketchup can be helpful. there is an 800 Minute demo of the pro version that allows you to export. however the new version overwrites google sketchup, so unless you can hunt down an old version, your screwed
I spent months requesting an Island Station for my subway route, in the end, no one ever stepped forward, si using sketchup, i made exactly what i needed. I know all you "real" 3D modelers always try to say bad things to people that want to expermient with sketchup, but when i have to wait 5 months for something, and end up having to build it myself using a crappy 3D program just so it actually gets done, I will use whatever 3D program i frigging want, and you can lay off me for what my choice is
if you dont like it, dont download it, plain and simple
