I've decided to start using the "punch-hole" technique on my current route projects to overcome the limitations of the built in tunnelling system. Now this works similar to the MSTS/KRS system of hiding the hole in the terrain with decals/splines or objects.
Can anyone point me to a good tutorial as to best practice when using this system, as at present I'm ending up with a large proportion of "hole" around the tunnel portal which is proving difficult to disguise?

Find a route that uses the same technique and see how it was done.

Doesn't Hawes Junction built into TRS2006 use this technique?

Tunnels config files can be changed, by altering the tunnel height to -1, then it does not lock and snap to the grid and can go straight through a mountain (but this disables dighole), track kuids can also be changed in the tunnel. (If you change assets and upload your route to DLS the tunnel will revert to normal, and will be goofy looking to future uploaders).
"Dighole 1x1" is the smallest and most handy, and it can always be erased from looking down from directly above, or slightly off center.
Adjusting the topography using the hand/mouse movement, up/down tool, can reduce the dighole oversize, height.
Sometimes slightly moving or relocating a track from side to side, will help center a tunnel dirrectly in a single 1x1 dighole.
There are also several types of small "grass (plane) splines" that slides over an oversize dighole, you can alter he grass spline color or image in "edit in explorer" using MS Paint/Edit/Cut/Paste
Example: UK Tunnel Grass Plane 1 & 2
As to tutorials, search Youtube site by typing "Trainz"-Tunnels-Tracklaying...etc...
Using this forums "send personal message", or Yahoo IM is a great way to get quicker replies, where someone can walk you through a process.

Hello Cascade,
If you have a moment, can you explain what you mean when you say the dighole can be erased?
Thanks.

For instance, AJS Dighole is an item that punches a hole of 10m x 10m through the baseboard and leaves a visible X under the ground.
If placed in the wrong spot, you can erase the dighole object by toggling the ground textures off (you get in a sort of wireframe mode) so you can see and delete the X under the surface.

If you're going to upload the route I would put a list of the tunnels that you used in the description and or a readme file and explain that these tunnels need to be opened and set the height to a -1. Doing this will fix any hole that they have dug. Put a warning in there too that any other routes they have these tunnels on will not have a hole any more.

Thanks for the suggestions - I seem to have got the hang of it a bit better now!
