View Full Version : Dynamic Brakes sound - can't be right?

I am new to Trainz (2009) and have been experimenting with dynamic brakes using the BN SD40-2 loco, and I am surprised that the sound that is played when the dynamic brakes are applied by cranking up the throttle control sounds exactly like the train in neutral with and cranking up the throttle! This can't be right can it? MSTS has a much more realistic sound and uses a separate control for the amount of dynamic. Also, I didn't see much effect og the dynamic brakes on the BN SD40-2 until I cranked up the throttle to 7 or 8. Is this normal for all locos in the game?

I'm guessing that depends on who made the locomotive and what values he/she put in the config file? :)

yes it is true that the dynamic brake is simply using the engine sound, i hate it, and it would be possible to use a real db sound there with some careful scripting that i worked out once, but you cant turn the engine sound off in braking mode so its pointless. it isnt real likely that they will care about this major flaw any time soon, but you gotta take what you can get.

the effect the braking has depends on that locomotive's engine config.

Thanks nfs37 for confirming what I suspected. It's too bad since I am really impressed with TS2009 in general and prefer many of its features over MSTS. It's a big improvement over the trainz version I tried a few years ago (I think the it was the first version). In MSTS I really enjoy descending a steep grade with a long train and combining dynamic with air brakes. With TS2009 I think I will generally avoid dyanmic altogether since the sound is so annoying and ruins the realism!

 I have noticed this, it's annoying.

NS37's enginesound kuid2:45324:53001:2 sounds great in any throttle position, but it's not for db sounds...

So..I notch to about run-4 & make about a 40lb brake reduction(application).

Some roads like NS have the ability to idle the engine at notch-4 to run the air compressor whilst in dynamic braking.

Don't forget to bail-off the locomotive brake during the auto-brake application...
