One of the official NASA download sites for SRTM is: ftp://e0srp01u.ecs.nasa.gov

Viewfinder Panoaramas offers a different set of DEMs. There are in the same file format as SRTM but were "hand-crafted" from topo maps. Viewfinder Panoramas is of particular interest for Scandinavia as they have data north of 60 degrees latitude. They also have higher resolution (1 arc sec) for the Alps.

For MapMaker you will need 3 arc sec as far as I remember.
