Yes, they are a nice set, most of the FMA series of assets fit well into UK scenes, I use them a lot.
But why are the trains running the wrong way?

I like the loco, but the shaded black line down the front is a little perculiar and the flanges look a little bright.
Unfortunately for a reskin there is nothing that can be done about that, the whole body is duplicate textured apart from the cabs, that is a reskinners nightmare. I tried many, many combinations, that one overall fitted the loco best. Any other combination looked very weird on the loco sides, this way it is limited to the smokebox door.
The original wheels are bright, the reskinned wheels are not bright. The reskinned bogies all failed upload due to unforseen missing shadow meshes. There is no mention anywhere in the asset of shadow meshes and no mesh table, so it came as a bit of a surprise! Blue must have intended to include them with the originals then pulled them before release. I am working on trying to get another set built so they can go on the DLS, this may take a while however.
The reskin incorporates chameleon texture switching and includes all 18 numbers of the preserved Black 5s.
By the way you didn't notice the lining does not extend high enough on the tender sides, again the original mapping means this could not be achieved.

But then again, there's an excellent Black 5 available, lined and unlined, with TC3. I don't know why we're bothering with a five year old model when we have a much better one available for only £20 (plus all the other improvements that TC3 offers).
Why can't UK Trainzers get behind TC3 rather than continuing to flog the dead horse of TRS04?
Just a thought.

The 'dead horse' is alive and well here.
I did buy TC3 but had so many problems and after a week of trying I gave up, even with the kind help and instructions from several folk and following them carefully, it refused to load content.
I got a whole route in once but the next time I went to open it the route had vanished. I can do without that.
With 04 you just click the kuid and in it goes, simple, no fiddling about with CM2 or whatever it is called and committing anything, in 04 it commits itself.
All my routes are made in 04 and I get few complaints - so far.... ha ha.
So I have tried to support Auran and TC3. Maybe this is why many folk don't?
Okay, 04 may not have so many bells and whistles but it works for me very well so I shall stick with it. I know I am missing some nice assets but for me all that extra work was not worth it.
Good luck to all users of versions after 04, I hope they are what you desire, and that is the important point, if they work for you then that is what you desire.
Bless all Trainzers ( and their Trainz version),
Angela

I think whether or not I reskin the TRS2004 Black 5 is up to two people only- the original creator and me.
Whether I upgrade to a version of Trainz I don't actually need is up to one person- me only.
TRS2004 is definitely not a dead horse, if you want to use TC3 and have the hassle of an upgrade that is entirely up to you, what anyone else does is up to them. By the same token, why haven't you upgraded to TRS2009 when that essentially obsoletes TC3: for the same reason I've not upgraded, I'm perfectly happy with what I have got.

Just a thought.
Paul£20 is a fair amount of money for one engine and TC3 offers features many will care about. Trainz2004 is the version for which most content is created for. I'd have to dig deep to find TC or even 2006 exclusive content. 2004 and even 1.3.
People won't go behind newer version if they find little advantage in it. You might like the new version but not everyone does. For many it is silly to create content for TC3 only as a little number of users would then be able to use it.
I've lost count of TC content I've back dated to 1.3 level because the content itself has no discerning feature and works in the 2002 version with little modification. Just sticking a new trainz-build tag in the config is just silly.
I bet you can't even differenciate TC3 screenshots in this thread.

Well this thread isn't really the place to have a debate about the merits of TC3 and I apologise for being rather cheeky in raising the issue in response to the Black 5 reskin (it's probably not a good idea to submit a post after the third glass of wine.....)
However, here's a thought - do new reskins of old TRS04 models that are also available in new, updated forms in TC3 undermine sales of TC3? We know that sales of TC3 have underperformed, largely due to Auran's lack of support, but surely the continued promotion of TRS04 via these reskins also undermines sales? It's one thing to issue reskins of old models, like the class 20, that are not available elsewhere, but the Blue class 5 is in direct competition with the Pikkabird class 5 that's available in TC3. Actually it should be no contest, just look:
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n264/paulsw2/BlackFivescompared.jpg
But the issuing of new reskins of this old model clearly muddies the waters and may persuade some people that it's not worth upgrading to TC3 even though, almost certainly, they'll benefit from doing so.
Is it in the wider interests of the UK Trainzer community to undermine sales of the best, and most stable, version of Trainz we've ever had? (Which also explains why I've not 'upgraded' to TS09 yet, seeing you asked.)
Just another thought! Back to the screen-shots.....

Paul
Firstly- you are missing the point entirely- anything produced in TRS2004 will work in TC3 so enhances that product also in the long run. Due to my groups efforts we now have class 20s with disc headcodes and many wagons across the board that were not previously available- and much much more.
Secondly you haven't shown the reskin of the Black 5 I have done against the new one so what actually is the point of that screenshot??? Why don't you post a screenshot of the new class 60 against, say the TC3 class 24 and try to compare them?
Thirdly- if you are suggesting that a reskin of a TRS2004 model is affecting sales of TC3 then you are suggesting TC3 is frankly not good enough- this arguement is actually ridiculous. TC3 stands or falls on the merits of it's own content, not what third parties are providing for any other versions of Trainz. As I see it, TC3 has a fantastic route and some of the best vehicles available for UK Trainz. Unfortunately it didn't include content from previous versions of Trainz, a big mistake in my opinion. As that content has not gone on the DLS, or been incorporated in TRS2009, then it is basically standalone; I think this was the big problem. What my group does is caters for everyone- I've even tried to sort out problems with content so they will work in TC3 and TRS2009 so am consciously catering for everyone.
Fourthly- I will say it again, if I want to release content for TRS2004 I will do so. Captain Scarlet summarised it in a nutshell above- most of the UK content is available in that version. so anything produced by the TC3 team is done for a minority; I am spending countless hours catering for as many Trainzers as I can, all for no personal financial gain, which is my rather unselfish philosophy.

I think it also partly depends on the era that you want to represent and also what you want to do in the game. Myself its a mixture of route building and driving, but all my routes are orientated around 60's and earlier, thus TC3 is a far more attractive proposition for me as it caters to what I want. The TC3 singling and steam physics really matter for this type of era. If you modelling anything after 68 then TC3 is not as attractive as not all the benefits maybe realised, eg steam physics. If you just spend you time in surveyor and only hit driver to take screens then really 2006 or higher isn't an attractive proposition. Many have said that Auran shot themselves in the foot in announcing 2009 before TC3 hit the shelves. Not exactly a great marketing. The lack of builtin 2004 content in TC3 is a bit of a problem but luckily on my fictional route I've largely managed to negate this issue with downloading acceptable or better replacement content of the DLS. On the content creation front for steam locos it is more of pain in making them backwards compatible with pre TC3 versions of Trainz due to the number of improvements in the TC3 code that allow for better steam operations. These mainly being physics, sound and bogie control. To sum up, If you want 60's or earlier operations then it maybe worth giving TC3 and good look, especially if you combine it with either 2009 or add in 2004/2006 content to TC3. If building outside that era then you've got 2004/2006/2009 to take your pick from.

Well, get supporting Auran yourself then and upgrade to TRS2009 now and no excuses....(well that's your ridiculous arguement taken a stage further). When TRS2010 comes out, make sure you purchase that straight away too, and TRS2011, and TRS2012 etc.
By the way, TRS2004 is definitely the best Trainz version in my opinion (you should have added that line to your post for accuracy), at the majority of content works in it- so why don't you buy a copy of that as well:hehe: ??

Right enough, this thread is about screenshots. Since this Black 5 reskin has generated so much excitement, here's a screenshot of it about to depart from Fort William:
http://img8.imageshack.us/img8/8794/5mtc.jpg (http://img8.imageshack.us/my.php?image=5mtc.jpg)
This shows the real reason behind this reskin, specially reskinned locos for another in the series of Fort William- Mallaig sessions. Steam returned to the line in 1984, 5407 doing the honours. After a couple of months, 5407 had a west highland terrier symbol added to the cabside for working the route as can be seen here drawing admiring glances from the passengers. In the other direction there is a white stripe Eastfield class 37 scheduled to pass at Glenfinnan, again specially skinned for this purpose.

Now with basic cab details (but no custom cab view, for the moment at least) and a few other minor tweaks. I think I've finally finished the body mesh and UV mapping, with the exception of the exhaust brackets which Blender didn't want to bake the shadow map onto for some reason...
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/martin_poole/images/TRS66_9.jpg
I need to get busy with the paintbrush and sort out appropriate couplers next.
edit: sorted out the exhaust bracket textures and added couplers (not active). Updated screenshot.

Hello Basist118,
Whitewater, yes, it looks good and looks even better in Trainz because it all moves along like a real river! Superb...
Go onto the DS, click all version options back to pre 3 (or whatever it's called, I can never remember, in short all versions to 2004) and then click the kuid radio button and type 78193:
Just hit search and all sorts of great stuff will pop up. Go to page 5 for the water effects.
Still masses to do on the route though, that is only a small section I went mad on.
At the moment the two end stations are called Overhills at one end and Faraway the other, so that gives you a clue as to the name of the route, rather tongue-in-cheek. And also that it is likely to be hilly!
Blessings,
Angela

There are possibly many reasons why, we just know them all or that person's situation.
At least if his content is uploaded then it will always be available, far better that than just closing a site down.
Good luck Dave, whatever you are considering doing.

well a transaction must have taken place for the boss of Wessex Trains to let first to take over the routes, DMU's, staff ect.
i very much doubt that the CEO of Wessex Trains would have done it for free.
they did the same with Truronian and prob with loads of other companies.

Skodatrainz: The 6 month rolling contract was up for renewal in July as was my domain name and I had been experiencing some difficulty in uploading new content last week (Mk3 sleeper and DVT) So I decided to give them 1 months notice and upload my content to the DLS .
Obviously sod and his law has made uploading to the DLS virtually impossible at the moment , But don't panic I'm not leaving trainz or abandoning my content creation . I have 8 items already fully packaged ready to uploaded once they fix it with plenty more to follow. :)

PS I see you got the side numbers applied, did alphaplanes work OK?
At the moment the number is part of the main texture:o . Not sure how to go about this yet-
-one smaller texture mapped to a single corrugated plane on each side;
-alphanumbers to multiple corrugated planes on each side (high poly count);
-alphanumbers to multiple flat planes on each side (might look a bit rubbish);
-a texture group with multiple variants of the main texture (although this would be huge if I wanted to cover a decent range of numbers).
I'll experiment a bit more...

Stunning!
Just a thought- (and this depends on how you have set up the side numbers) try adding hint=dynamic to the .texture files for the numbers and they won't appear blurred when viewed from this tight angle.
I'm not sure how you would do this if these are standard alphanumbers though as these don't seem to have associated .texture files.

A fare dodgers nightmare. These gates currently come in packs of 2 with the disabled gate being a free standing unit, I may have 4 and 8 births soon (customisable so they are all open/closed, if I can spare the time) as quite frankly, 2 at a time is a pain in the rear to place. The gates are about 1.625m long (40 metre long place, need 25 or more gates to fill the space which would take you a long time!). The spline version doesn't work ATM, I've seem to of broken it :(

Yes it is indeed a reskin of Alan's great 170! I also reskinned Pete's 156 SuperSprinter as well on the page before this one. And now, for some Centro/NWM Bham XC South shots staring Dave's(and IC125) wonderful 323 in Centro RR colors(or colours whichever you like). I've only started in Redditch, and I'm slithering my way through the Midlands to Alvechurch and up to Barnt Green. I tried to do this back in 2008(jeez its been that long ago), but the distance between stations was unreal and too close in proximity. Since I've been on the Bham XC line when I went to ya'lls country, yeah well you can figure out the rest.

Redditch looks great Isaac . If memory serves me correctly there's a bit more space between the buffer stops (Rail end) and the road as a pedestrian underpass goes underneath the road using the old rail alignment .

Colhad tries his hand at a UK route, just for something different.
Only going by what I see in other British routes, my only means of getting an idea of how a British route should look.
The route is totally fictional, that being the case I can be excused for any mistakes that may be present in these screenshots.
I have started with a small town with station, and some other areas that I've made some progress with.
I've used a class 20 and MK1 cars in these shots....

The only thing wrong, if there had to be something wrong is the double track spacing seems too much. The tracks are much closer together over here..
If you're going to change it and not sure how close check out the track spacers by andi06, the 3.5ft ones :)
Oh and you probably need a bit of Dukey in the fields if you got some sheep at some point ;) (wheres he been recently!?)

Hi Davie, the track spacing is coming from the station as that is how they are fixed to the station if you know what I mean. Thanks for pointing it out to me though.

Hi colhad, very nice screenshots. It was said that the trackwork spacing was wrong, but as you say, that's how the station is. You need to set up a new route as British, however, as you will forever get traffic driving the 'wrong' way. :)
This route is called 'Stuff the framerates', for obvious reasons. When you can't get out the house, you need something to work on. Actually, it's 'North of the Border', but the previous title fits well. Believe it or not, the framerate never drops below 15, however I follow the loco. Maximum in the built-up area is 22.
I've got a shed load of pics, but I won't bore you with them all.
If you see any content that you're interested in, please don't duplicate the shot, just quote the screenshot number.

Hi Escafield
Yes I originally used one of the newer "regions" that come with TRS09. Problem was I was getting all vintage trucks and such, I just changed it back to the default "UK" region and now I get the normal vehicles again.
I have also moved the tracks closer together, upon viewing another route, I noticed there is hardly a gap between the tracks.

Question to all the British folks, when would you use a hedge instead of the stone walls in a route?? So far, in the route I'm putting together, I've not used a hedge yet just all stone walls. Have them all alongside the tracks, around crops and farms. Where should I change to hedges, around residential areas, cottages, small farms??.
Thanks folks.

nowadays headges are used more for resedential places. Walls are used more than hedges in frams as they take up less room as due to the lack of roots in walls more land can be used for crops etc.

This may be true in Yorkshire and all stations north, but not in southern/western England where hedges and fencing is more common place and walls are not used much at all.
It really depends on what is available locally and oop north where stone is, then you get walls, usually I think, dry stone ones. The northern routes always tend to look a bit barren to me....
But here in the deep south (ya'all) then it's a different matter. Not much stone lying around so fences and hedges come into their own.
Go west and you may well see a balance of walls, fences and hedges.
It just amounts to district - where you are in the UK, and who said 'uk' or even 'yuk', it's GB, Great Britain, always was when I was at school.
Using the AJS station kits will bring your tracks closer together too. Just a thought.

Lincolnshire is mostly fences and hedges. Hedges as in lines of small to large trees, which are probably overgrown hedges.
Check out Geograph.org.uk to see, in part, the whole of the British Isles. Also look at maps.live.com for aeriel views, which in some places are three dimensional.

I haven't seen this in any other area except the Guildford area in Surrey, but hedgerows are usually used behind the spiked fences on our local line. As other people have said, dry stone walls usually start to appear when you hit Derbyshire, Yorkshire, the hilly bits of Cheshire and a little bit of Staffordshire - but I reckon a mix of the lot would look quite nice

This is called 'Hedge 15 Spline' and before the fence was put in the hedge was given several random spline points so that it could be pulled to varying heights to create a non-uniform hedge as those which surround other than residential areas.

The station is a terminus, which requires the loco to runaround the train. It thinks about it for about 10 times and then runs around and couples up. I might make it a through station eventually, but it's already a 400 baseboard run from end to end.

I am one who gets burned out easily though, I try to keep my routes small to combat that. Hopefully that won't happen and I'll have a route that I can release to the DLS. Hmmm, I haven't uploaded a route in over 12 months I think.

Colhad,
Go easy on the stone walls, they are very much a feature of the North. No modern fencing would be done in stone except in "conservation areas" to replace like for like - far too expensive!
To get more British looking cars on the roads you can edit (suggest clone and edit) the Region asset (if using TRS 2009 it's OK to edit in CCP) and change the KUIDs of the cars listed to any vehicle you want.
Keep up the good work - we'll have you converted to the dark side yet....

Dear Escafeld,
That's a fair point. What I do when creating countryside or anywhere where grass textures are needed is to lay all the grasses I feel I might want to use out at a part of the route that's bare boards, both JVC and FMA assets.
Then I can zoom out/in and see what happens. I knock out the ones that vanish because I find it very off-putting to have grass, or indeed anything else, suddenly appear right in front of you when running. Our eyes can see grass textures at quite a distance (even mine!) so having them suddenly pop out of the woodwork isn't right at all.
Here is a piccy of a part of my Branchline SLW and see what you think.
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t82/angelajaneh/Branch_10_5_bridge.jpg
The grass used is JVC@-grass221 dry grass and all-in-all it isn't too bad.
Try also FMA instant grass h 30 x 20, that stays in view.
These two assets creators seem to have the 'market' cornered.... ha ha, but they are both very good, it's just a matter of laying their assets out on bare ground and seeing what might work for that particular location.
And I often double-lay splines, that is a short grass with another more 'robust' one over it or a flower spline, or use small patches of tough and taller grasses in special areas that might be regarded as boggy or wet, that is short sections of splines, not necessarily static objects.
Hope that might help.
Blessings,
Angela

And so I continue, been looking at Yorkshire Plains by Harcourt for ideas.
A question that many of you may ask, why would an Aussie want to do a UK route. Well, I've always been one to make a variety of routes. I enjoy using different textures, different types of buildings and all. I just enjoy route building I guess.
I also have a very broad interest in rail, of course I naturally follow the Aussie rail scene but I can appreciate trains and locos from around the world. Mostly into early generation diesels, good to see the UK look after theirs. Can't say the same for Queensland really. Most other states in Australia do have the odd diesel tour, organised by the Australian Historical Railway Society (ARHS).
The screenshots today show two trains, now one is a class 35 Hymek??, the other a class 31. I've made some good progress, a fair bit more has been textured and detailed.
More from Axminster, the default name of the railway station used. Then we travel a little bit along the line to see the developments being made.

Hi Colhad,
You got some good work done there, one thing I'd comment on are your sidings. I believe they would be more credible if both sidings joined then connected to the first main line track then have a crossover, essentially having a ladder. This means trains can arrive from one direction, use the sidings and go back where they came from instead of being stuck in one direction.
Look at this diagram (http://www.lymmobservatory.net/railways/sbdiagrams/woodhead2/Scan1012-30.jpg) and footbridge 138, the goods sidings to the North side of the line, they join then ladder to the other tracks.

Hi Colhad,
You got some good work done there, one thing I'd comment on are your sidings. I believe they would be more credible if both sidings joined then connected to the first main line track then have a crossover, essentially having a ladder. This means trains can arrive from one direction, use the sidings and go back where they came from instead of being stuck in one direction.

I actually tried that but it reallt distorted the track, I tried using the straighten tool as well and just couldn't get it to look right. I have always struggled to do proper ladder yards, I mostly have to have a few goes to get it right, sometimes I can't get it right. That is when I resort to having the two tracks join to both tracks. I do have a crossove further up to allow for trains to enter either end of the siding.
I will try to make it more of a ladder but I fear it will buckle the tracks.
Ok, I have changed the siding to be more of a ladder. Heh, I can do it when I put my mind to it.

You can't get breaking waves, yet, but a bit of white under water helps.

I could suggest using the JK points and the JK way gauges by andi06 to stop distortion. Try not to use the straighten tool because as you straighten one length of track, sometimes something else becomes un-straightened or distorted.

Wherever there should be straight track on my routes I use 3.5m double track, from very long lengths to very short. When turnouts and everything else has been connected, I delete the double track, connect with single and use the straighten tool on the replacement. No problems.
