Hi
I abandoned my South Western Mainline route (which was going to include Southampton) about a month ago since I was busy at the time.

Though I have started a new route that I definately will finish since it's based on my local route; a small section of the Ascot - Guildford line.

However I may want to finish the route off some point later, so I'll let you know if I'll need a baseboard

Thanks for your offer James :)

If you mean TC3, I had the Just Trainz DVD a year before it developed a minute hairline crack and was useless. They eventually grudgingly agreed to replace it.That was about 2 years ago.Now the replacement disc has about 5 cracks radiating from the hole.Make sure you keep the receipt for the disc.:(

Liam125, great shots there! Looking forward to that route! Just one thing that I noticed, in your shot with the level crossing, the 3rd rail is over the road. Disconnect the 3rd rail track, attach standard track to both ends. Then delete one end, and reconnect the 3rd rail bit, the do the same with the other end. The result should be that you have 3rd rail at both sides of the crossing, but not over the road. (If all this makes sense!)

Nexus.....I'm also not in the mood / don't have the time to do any more reskinning at the moment. Trainz is also extremely boring now, am not sure why but I've not driven anything or done any route building for months now :(

I've been ill and stuck in the house for 5 weeks now with the odd trip to the doctors / hospital and the odd walk out around the block :(
The time off would of been the ideal situation to try and finish off my unfinished content but the tablets I was on gave me head aches and made my head go fuzzy if I stared at a screen or TV for longer than 10 or 15 minutes ! so I've been reading books and magazines and doing small chores etc around the house to keep my occupied .

Now that I'm off the tablets and feeling slightly better I dont want to be stuck in !!

I haven't even been on a real train for 4 weeks.... :'(

Anyway for those that don't care and are ready to moan about the misuse of the thread space here's a screenie to keep you happy :p

Lol no they are (as I described in Tips And Tricks Surveyor) simply attached to Invisible Track and raised by trial and error till they sit on the bracket.Their actual function is performed by an Invisible Signal on the track below, and for the main arms I cloned them and altered the Trackside Values so that the sat the right distance from the track.I can do a Surveyor pic if you want.

No need- I'd have to place loads of them so I'll wait until a gantry version is produced, thanks anyway.

what do you mean endless waffle and quoted ones? there's not loads of waffle in this thread, infact there's very little of it, as far as i can tell. This is a good thread for avoiding what you so charmingly refer to as "waffle", what with everyone's very basic, stripped down posts only asking the questions they want answered and with some comments on the screenshots, too. although there is the odd occasional waffle-y post, they are generally far a few between :p

Put me down for a Belah too....I did a bit of measuring last night and found that Kirkby Stephen East to Smatdale actually fits onto the existing baseboard with the addition of another baseboard for the east end of KSE. The tracklaying gangs have already laid a single track from Smardale - KSE and KSE to Waitby crossing...;) P.S http://www.forgottenrelics.co.uk/bridges/belah.html

Hi Gents:

Whats a "Belah"? (ok - it much be a bridge or viaduct named after its location).

All it takes is photos and basic info. Length, length and number of individual spans, height at the highest point, number of tracks, gauge, etc.

Ben

Hi Ben, if you follow the link on my post above you can see what we mean...Belah Viaduct was a 200 foot tall trestle viaduct with cast iron tubular legs on the legendary Stainmore Route which ran from Darlington to Tebay across the Pennines.Livery in early BR days (1948 onwards) was (I think) grey micaceous oxide but it was repainted in 1955 in BR(LM) cream with Maroon "socks".The line was closed in January 1962 and the viaduct was demolished soon after.Incidentally I walked the line from Barnard Castle to Kirkby Stephen East in 1996 and there were still pieces of the legs lying in the valley belowThere was a similar viaduct at Deepdale but it was only 165 feet tall and shorter in length....:(

Hi Lewisner:

I've started on it.

Do you happen to know the profile of the valley it crosses? Not all vertical supports would have been the full 200 ft tall. It looks as tho there are concrete footers under each leg. If I know the profile I can make varying height support towers with the concrete footers. If not and I make them all 200 ft tall most of the concrete footers will be under ground.

Also - do you know if it was solid deck (you can not see the ground between the ties) or open deck (you can see the ground between the ties)? Little hard to tell from the photos.

Hi ben, there are several photos and drawings of belah in the late Peter Waltons book "The Stainmore and Eden Valley Railways" and a guy made a 4 mm scale model of Deepdale viaduct with diagrams in Model Railways magazine in 1975.I'll see if i can scan them for you.Heres a description "A unique feature of Belah and Deepdale Viaducts was the tapering of the main ironwork from a 50ft dimension at the base to less than half that at the top.Belah, 1,049 feet long and 196 feet high spanned the valley by means of 15 vertical piers (16 spans) each composed of cast iron, 12 inch diameter columns arranged in 2 parallel lines of 3 each and braced to each other by cross girders at 5 feet intervals. This main framework was tied together by wrought iron bars. The 15 piers were pitched at a nominal 60ft apart and were topped with a lattice girder arrangement which included an internal, integral walkway..Large,special timbers were provided for the decking, ornamental cast parapets 24 feet apart and topped with timber handrailing completed this marvellous structure." Heres another link with a good photo of one of the abutments http://www.cumbria-railways.co.uk/belah9.html which were roughly 35 feet from rail level to ground level and supprted an "X" truss longitudinal span about 7 feet deep. The valley sides sloped at an average of 20 degrees from ground level at the abutments, and each abutment was 35 feet long.Hope this helps.

Hi Ben,

Some more information on Belah Viaduct from "The Stainmore Route" by Ken Hoole:

16 x 60ft spans
1040ft long
196ft maximum height
24ft wide between parapets

The valley is a classic "V" shape, quite symmetrical it seems. The viaduct gradient is quite significant though at 1 in 60 from my gradient profile.

I have some photos of the deck I can send to you.

Thanks for offering to do this, very much appreciated.

I see Lewisner has got there first with most of thie above!

Hi Gents:

Thanks for the extra info (I have a few things to change, lol).

The only thing which does not compute is the 5 ft spacing of the bracing on the piers. If the tallest in the photos is 196 ft it would require 39 of them yet the photos only show 10 (20 ft spacing).

nexusdj

The track is reskinned VSR that I will hopefully get round to releasing (it's on the big to do list) .

The points are just standard track splines with add on frog and check rail sections by Bald called:
pulsrdcovka_vlevo (kuid:85701:24171)
pulsrdcovka_vpravo (kuid:85701:24172)

Available from http://trainzpedro.cz/

The tree's I'll have to open up the route and check ?

Hi,

Yes I see what you mean. Below is an extract from Wikipedia

The station was originally opened in 1864 as Gosforth station and was later renamed to South Gosforth in 1905[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Gosforth_Metro_station#cite_note-0). An original North Eastern Railway (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Eastern_Railway_(UK)) footbridge (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Footbridge) remains in use at South Gosforth. A similar footbridge removed from Percy Main (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Percy_Main_Metro_station) station has been preserved (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historic_preservation) by the National Railway Museum (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Railway_Museum) in York (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/York).[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Gosforth_Metro_station#cite_note-1)

Also I,ve been the wrong side of 60 for a few years now:) . Trouble is I can,t use my bus pass on the Metro System.

This shows where a portal goes to...

http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t82/angelajaneh/3_Avalon__5.jpg

The shots are all of a small'ish station at the end of one of the many runs.
The idea is that the big main station is where the operator would be stationed (ha ha) and send trains out to portals or return runs (not many of those). I have tried this out and it works pretty well.

Next lot coming

lewisner
October 26th, 2008, 05:57 PM
Regarding builders footbridge, they were a standard pattern introduced by the North Eastern Railway in (I think) 1905 and had numbers cast into each segment so that they could be built "Meccano style" in different configurations with stairs going in different directions. The ones at Goathland and Pickering stations are not original to the stations but were recovered from other sitesm and one at Ryhope station still stands although the line was closed many years ago.The footbridge at Grosmont is of wrought iron lattice pattern and not NER pattern.

The thrill of NSE was keeping them up!

Avalon Town catherdral and Town (wip)

Looking from the catherdral roof down across the main station entrance and platforms.

And a view up the main street, station on the left, catherdral would be right.

The aim has been to create something 'different' and I hope I have achieved my objective.

Thanks to Photobucket too.

Its not track as such, it is a 3rd rail spline, which I find (sorry Bloodnok) is better than the VSR track, for 3 good reasons.
1, the 3rd rail is height adjustable, regardless of its position
2, it is works for any track
3, you have much more control over the placement of the 3rd rail.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g217/wessexelectricnut/Trainz/Screen_416.jpg

But it is extremely fiddly, however, the results are worth it. To get the third rail spline, you have to go to here:
http://www.medwayvalleytrainz.co.uk/custom_content_rails_standard.html
There is a lower poly version, but I don't know where Mike10 stored it.
