How much does an unused baseboard affect performance on a route?

If it's unused, you can delete it. If you change your mind later, you can recreate it but of course only as a totally blank new baseboard. Sorry if you knew all that.

My problem is this: I have created a DEM route with about 1,000 blank baseboards that will not be used. I obviously do not want to delete them all by hand otherwise I would be there for hours, if not days.

Is there any other way of deleting multiple baseboards at once?

Depends on how you created the DEM. If you used HOG, I might know but another method I wouldn't.

There is no quick method to delete unwanted baseboards that I am aware of, so it is one at a time. We have been asking in the suggestion box for a long time now for the ability to at least do it from the mini map, but I have no idea if TRS2009 will include that timesaving suggestion.

There is no way to delete multiple baseboards, but a fairly easy method for deleting four of them in about 5 seconds is to do this:

Re-save the route under a new name first.

Open the minimap and zoom in/out until you can see about six or eight boards

For best results, orient yourself North at Top of Map

Right-click the minimap at the junction of four unused boards - lower right board. This will put you right at the junction of four boards but slightly off to one side and low.

In the main window (after setting yourself up to "Delete Boards") left-click a spot where any of the other three boards would normally be. Save the LAST click for the current board. If you click the mouse and then hit the "Return" key (do dismiss the 'do you really want to do this' warning) you will learn to get rid of four boards in rapid order.

Move the point of view to the left/right/up/down and do another 4 boards.

I did this many times on the DHR and got where I could remove over 200 boards in about 15 minutes or less. If you stop every 15 or 20 boards and save again as a new name, you won't have to start over if you goof up. You can also restart if you DO goof up and delete a wanted board.

how are you creating your route using DEM
depending on what programme your using you should be able to create a rough area of your DEM with the least amount of baseboards. you'll still have to trim it up a bit but it won't be 100's of baseboards

Be careful when removing baseboards. If you remove the one with the World Origin, you may have all sorts of trouble.

I have created the route using TranzDEM Trainz Edition. I may have exaggerated the number of spare baseboards, but there are a fair few. However, the line I am modelling has a diagonal shape and transDEM has decided that all routes should have perfectly straight sides.

Same issue I had. Also created with TransDem Trainz edition (ver 1.3)
I decided to start trimming bbd's because the route was so big it was taking over 2 minutes to save to HDD (with RAID 0, which is faster than single drive).
When I was done, and tried to create UTM tiles from TransDem, the error was that the World Origin could not be found.
I had removed it in one of the bbd's I had cut.

GeoPhil, the author of TransDem (a member of this forum) told me how to recreate the WO.
It seemed to work, but after creating a couple UTM tiles and successfully importing into the route, I could not create any more. TRS2006 had apparently reset the World Origin, and TransDem detected it now in the wrong place.
Perhaps I can fix the WO from Transdem again, but to be honest, I am getting tired of this repeat process. I think it's a Trainz problem, not a TransDem, so I am hoping that TS2009 will have fixed it.

If you want a trouble free route from TransDem, may I suggest not to cut any bbd tiles until you are completely finished with TransDem.

Thank you very much for the insight. I seem to remember checking the WO, and it was on a spare baseboard some way out from the route.

I have found that the WO moves when you import UTM tiles created in TransDem. I have no idea of why, but it happens sometimes, not always.
Now, I can no longer import tiles. I get no errors, but the KUID's for the tiles are not written into the config file after I save the route which is supposed to have them.
