HELP! Somebody, please tell me what's up here?
I'm making a batch of sound files I need for a layout. I've made 30some files, all identical except for the sound, so it's not like I don't know how to make them by now.
Today I just made (CCP) "horse1", "horse2", "horse3", no problem. Then I made "horse4", and surveyor plum refuses to play a sound. So I checked for spelling or other errors in config.txt (and CCP), no errors. I double checked the wav file. no problem. I finally gave up trying to figure out what that was about. Deleted the file. Started over. Even made a whole new wav file, just in case the old one had some problem I couldn't detect. Checked the new "horse4" file. NO sound. I also tried to just rename the wav file (other than "4"), NO sound.
What the ..... ??? I'm going nuts here. Is it written with small print somewhere that I'm only allowed 3 horses?????
I want my horsie :'(
Anybody have a suggestion here????
EDIT:
CONTINUATION:
I tried to make a "horse5", no sound. Then shut down everything. Restarted the computer. Went back to CMP, made a "wolf" sound this time. Works like a charm (as does all the others). Tried my luck again with a "horse4", no sound! This really is driving me bonkers!!!!!
ANYBODY???????

Honestly, I don't know what is going on, I'm having a lot of problems of my own with Trainz. Have 4 and 5 been longer than 1 2 and 3? And depending on if you are using a program that needs to be bought and is becoming faulty due to a 30 second limit? Thats really all I can offer at this point, seeing that I am not the best person to figure out your "horsie" dilemma.
Good luck,

No, 4 and 5 are both smaller (wav) than some others I've made, and all my programs are paid for:hehe:
I sure don't know either, but thanks for your moral support. I will need some of that, before I end up in the funny-farm.

For anybody interested in this issue, I solved the problem.
Having the same problem with yet another sound, I realized it had to be the wav files creating the problem. And sure enough, they were both 2-tracks (stereo), and that's a no-no (as I just found out by digging a little further into the CCP guide). So back in the workshop they went (Audacity), turned them into mono files, dropped them back into the folder of the assets, and now everything works just fine, including horsie number 4!
So, I'm a lot smarter now, and hopefully somebody else can learn from my mistake too.

I just found your thread, and new what the problem was, but you solved it yourself. Good job. This is one of the aspects of Trainz that I really like and makes the program what it is compared to others out there.

So a horse walks into a bar and the bartender says "Why the long face?"
Sorry couldn't resist. :)

Meanwhile, Trainz just crashed on me, and CMP is going through a "rebuilding database", that's gonna take a while. This just isn't my day.
Oh well, I guess I can read through posts in forum in the meantime, and get even smarter.

In the mean time, can someone respond to my topic? Switching Loads? Not trying to be bossy or anything :hehe:

I'm interested in the things you do because you took an interest in mine. Glad to hear you solved the sound problem and it's good you took the time to post what the solution was. So many threads have problems but no solutions!
I know you're producing these sound objects for TRS2006. Is there any reason why these objects would not work in earlier Trainz editions? If there is no special feature in '06 that you're taking advantage of, then would you consider changing the trainz-build number in the configs to something less than 2.5 or 2.6? More people could use your assets then.

Hi Deane,
Thank you for taking an interest in my things.
I'm not quite sure what to answer here. I'm not making them "for" 2006, but I only have 2006, and I don't know if these would work in previous versions. I'm new at all this. I just jump into the fray of things when there's something I need and can't find, and try to find a way to make it. I would like for everything I make to be available to anyone that want to use it, but I'm not sure how.
I made these in CCP. When I open a new file, it automatically enters "trainz build 2.5". I don't know if I can change that without errors occurring, and if I do, will it then work for 2006 etc ?
If you have 2004, could you please download one and try it? Then let me know if it works. And if not, I would gladly change it so that it would, if you or someone else will tell me how to do that (without making a "faulty" asset out of it).
The sound files are all named "xjc sound .......", username "jytte", kuid 386158

eeeeeee, the forum just died on me, never seen that happen before.
Anyway, what I wanted to say was, I sure hope that 2009 would bring us all together on the same page. Would be so nice if we didn't have to deal with all these "different versions" issues.

Lost track of this thread for a while.
I'll D/L one of your sounds and manually change the trainz-build from 2.5 to 2.4 and report back soon.
Edit: Tried one of your horsies. Didn't work. I guess there must be more differences between '04 and '06 that I thought.

Dean, did you remove the zero that I highlighted in red below? 04 cannot read the .wav file if that 0 is there.
soundscript {
fans {
repeat-delay 0,0
distance 175,175
sound {
0 "Fan1.wav"
}
}
}

No, the only thing I changed was the trainz-build number, just to see if it was a simple thing for Jytte to make it '04-compatible. It appears not to be.
Presumably the zero is there because '06 needs it, so if it's removed, then doesn't the asset become faulty in '06 ? I'm sure that's not what Jytte wants.
Sure, I could remove the zero myself, but if I use it in an '04 layout that goes to the DLS, then it will still be a faulty asset for other '04 users.

That's exactly right Deane, and that's why I've spent time updating 40some files to '06, so I can have (and upload) a route that is NOT faulty.
If none of the new files I've made (like the horse) won't work for 2004, well... that sucks. Yes, I was looking for a way to make it work for both, but maybe that's not an option after all?
Thanks for trying Deane.
UPDATE: I made a clone of "horse1", and edited it directly in config.txt. I changed the build to 2.4, and removed the zero as bnsf50 said. It didn't show "faulty", but alas, when I go into surveyor to try it out, there's no sound. So I guess it's an either/or situation.

Hmmm, I just did some more investigating. I have a file "bird1" by Wiley4, I've used it in my route, so I know it works, and it is NOT showing "faulty" either, and this one was made back in July'03. Being that this is older, I assume that this one works for 2004.
Here's the config:

kind "scenery"
light 1
type "custom"
obsolete-table {
}
trainz-build 1.3
category-region-0 "to"
category-era-0 2000
soundscript {
dayloop {
repeat-delay
distance 50,100
sound {
bird1.wav
}
}
}
autoanimation 1
region "Wiley's Sounds"
asset-filename "Bird1"
name "Bird1"
category-class "BU"
kuid <kuid:45203:100238>
description "Soundfile Bird Chirping"
username "Bird1"
author "Wiley"
organisation "Trainzer"
contact-email "wiley4@bigpond.net.au"
contact-website "http://www.wiley4.net/"
license
kuid-table {
}
So, apparently there IS a way. I'll try to experiment some more. I'm just afraid, that if I stray too far from the current standard, I'll be really screwed when 2009 comes around, and I really want that one.

Is there a polling-option on this forum? Would be interesting to see how many is running what version (%wise).

No it will not show an error in 06, 06 would just put the zero back in if you open it in 06. You have to make a separate version for 04 without the zero, and uploaded as an 04 asset, not as a 06 cdp. This was just a what you have to do to get it to work in 04 example.
That's what I had to do with my switch machines that I made for 04 and 06 that are on the DLS 2 of which are: 39134:104237 the 04 version and 39134:100237 the 06 version, same switch machine.
Thats one reason I don't make items for 04 when ever they have a sound file, bogies etc. in them as I would have to make two them, which is to much extra work.

Ooooops, should've searched before asking stupid question.
Found the poll from June'08.
56% 2006
43% 2004
That's a fairly even spread. So, whenever we're creating an asset, for whatever version, we are leaving half the community out in the cold?
SIGH :(
I was planning to get a volunteer to try my route in 2004 (eventually), to see if it would work for that as well, but I guess that question has been answered already. At the very least, it's gonna be a very QUIET route if run in '04.
I'm still hoping for 2009 to bring more people together on the same page.

That won't happen. As of right now if an item is made in TC 1/2 or 3 it will not work in an earlier version, not even 06. I've checked the config files between 06 and TC and there is nothing showing different so evidently Auran has changed something in the game code this time so that assets cannot be backed down.
So go figure I guess Auran is just trying to force the purchase of and use of the newer versions, which is a business decision, not good for the end user however. This is why I've decided not to go any higher than 06 or I'll be locking out even more Trainz users. I don't like the sound problem's in TC anyway, so I'm happy where I'm at with 06.

I don't want to open another discussion of '09 here, just meant, that if 2009 is good enough and bug-free enough, then maybe the majority of '04 and '06 users will move to that version, and then we'll be "on the same page". Aren't we all looking forward to a newer/better version of whatever software we're running? I know I'm looking forward to some of the surveyor options. My only fear is the vast amount of routes for 04/06 that we may or may not be able to use, that would leave us even worse off?
I can see why most people won't want to go back and "update" their routes/assets, that IS a lot of work, and does not have the joy of "creating" as when making a new route. That is why my present route is a bit on the back-burner, since I plan on finishing it in 2009, if possible.
