Hello folks,

Is anybody able to identify the name of this over head wire thing that allows pantograph trains to be manourved on a turntable with relative ease. I wouldn't know what to search for....

I think that would look great on a trainz layout...
Thanks,
Jonny.

I believe that is called a "Split Ring".

So it's a split ring eh? Thanks CasyJ, much appreciated. I thought it was rather unusual, the pic is from a train graveyard in Bosnia I think.

I think that's the term, although a more accurate description would be Catenary Termination Junction. Notice that the wires are designed to lift off of the pantographs when on the turntable, which implies that the locomotives are unpowered when approaching the table and require a shunter for assistance. I don't suppose it would be a difficult task to model one of these for Trainz.

I sincerely don't know the English term for this wire arrangement. Here in Italy it is called "catenaria a raggiera" which would translate as "radial catenary" or "radial pattern catenary". It is also called "the spiderweb", but this is not - of course - the official denomination :D.

As regards to locomotives, as far as I know it is not necessary to use a shunter to turn or recover them; the locomotive enters the turntable with its rear partograph raised, then lowers it to avoid the danger of entanglement and is turned. Once it is in the desired position, it raises the forward pantograph and advances into the stall.

Thanks for the information. Now that I look carefully at the photos, it appears that the wires do extend to the edge of the table.

Thanks for your help Pendolino, CasyJ, Dave. 'Spiderweb' is a good name for it. Will attempt to find it on the DLS.
