Hello folks,
I picked up a copy of TS2006 yesterday at the local office supply place. After spending about 6 or 8 hours learning how to drive and going through the scenarios im wondering what to do next.
I really dont have the time right now to create my own entire railroad, or for that matter the know how. Can i download a really large railroad that is already created and work from that? Maybe be able to customize it a little with buildings and some custom rolling stock?
I read somewhere that there were some custom maps out there but im having trouble finding anything.
Is there some graphic upgrades to the game? I see some great photos of and it seems that my graphix on the game are more simple. I have everything turned up quite a bit and have ample computer power.
I really dont understand the portal thing. Does that mean when my train runs off of the map it goes on another map and i can continue?
Thanks in advance for your answers and input.

Hi Cabinetman,
If you would like to download a large route look into Philskene's Urban IndustRail Series.
For portals you can connect to another persons computer and send say a gas train to them and they could take it to a refinery and send a train full of aviation fuel back and you send that to your airport.
For a graphics update there is none. There is something called SP1 (Service Pack 1) that fix's some problems in the game.
Hope this help's you.
And Welcome to the fourms!
Cheers,
Adam

From the screenshots that is what im looking for. The models look great. It looks like there is a series of 10 or more maps.
I had a model railroad when i was about 12 years old. I guess im looking to do something similar without all that glue and balast and all that darn wiring!
Ill try and see where this downloads and give it a shot tomorrow.
Thanks for the input.

With portals, at least those that come with TRS2006, when a train runs off of the map, it can disapear never to be seen again, return via the same portal either loaded or unloaded after a delay you set, or re-apear at a different portal.

there are tons of layouts on the DLS. you can just poke arround there and I'm sure you'll find something good.

My advice is to look here (http://forums.auran.com/trainz/showthread.php?t=9437) for some routes that have all assets on the DLS, unlesss you don't mind hunting down missing assets.
PS: for philskene's Industrail series, you'll need some KUIDS I've only found here (http://forums.auran.com/trainz/showthread.php?t=18377).
Another long route is the Ultra Mega Route by neilsmith749 (on the DLS as well).

A cabinet maker who is sick of working with glue? Go figure! Trainz should do well by you, you can build and build and never once run into the hot water heater!

Just took a look on the DLS and came up with about 2400 routes available from small couple board layouts to monstorous computer slowing routes. Another place to find some very nice routes is at TPR ( Train Pro Routes ) which is found here http://www.trainzproroutes.org/. You have to register to download them but that is no big deal.
You could spend the rest of your life downloading routes. There are also tasks that can be downloaded from the DLS to go along with some of these routes.

Minor picky point:
The DLS has 1 base board layouts, such as my wonderful "Elko and Lincoln", and even smaller ones such as "N scale".

I went a little and crazy and just started downloading stuff.
I did industrail 7 and 8. It has the dependencies listed underneath and a button to download all the dependencies. Under my missings it still has some listed but my downloads are not complete. I went ahead and purchased the year ticket so the speeds are quite good and I have 400 mb down already today.
I took a peak at 7 (not all the dependencies are downloaded yet so it wasnt complete) its in the editor stage and changes can be made. Can i lock it as is and just apply some trains and start operating? Is there a map like there is for the scenarios? The layout seems great and i cant imagine the work that someone has in this. My editor doesnt seem to have any trains in it so i gather that is my next quest. The quest for rolling stock!
Yeah im a cabinet man but dont use any glue. One of those managment people that doesnt get his hands dirty very often, although i did the hands on stuff at one time. i got out with all my fingers!

One more question.....(ok im sure there will be many more...)
When you download a layout with mulitples (like industail 1a, 1b, 2, etc) How do you move your trains from layout to layout? I would imagine it works well or no one would make continuing layouts. Can you send a driver on his way from layout to layout?
This is going to be time consuming. I might as well buy my wife something now for all the time ill be in the computer room sifting through this and driving trains. Good thing this is cheap. My other hobby is car racing.
Thanks again for everyones input and your patience with this newb.

Hi
routes with multiples ( most of Phils ) are just newer and bigger versions.
all you really need is the latest version.
Once you have the latest version of Austral Bay and industrail you can download sessions created by Philskene ( the creator of the routes ) and also sessions by Midland.
other routes by Phil are also on the DLS, also with sessions.
If you download all the sessions they will keep you quiet for ages.:D
and they are still coming.
have lots of fun ( in CAB mode of course)
cheers

ok im getting a little grip now...
So when i see 6a and 6b they are not connecting maps b would just be the upgrade.
So when i download 8a i have Phils newest stuff. By the way, i played around a little on 8a, wow what a map.
In the instructions on the download page he says there is a read me file. How do i get to that file? I tried one scenario and got lost without directions. It was kinda cool to look around. My 9 year old twins like to blow the horn!
I only got on the wrong track twice!
I did notice that i was the only train on the map and there was very little rolling stock. I know im missing something.

One other thing im having a slight issue with.
ive downloaded all this stuff. Engines, rolling stock, etc. I go to put them on a map and i cant find one locomotive or any rolling stock.
Also how do you take on of the maps and make them playable. I can add buildings, scenery, etc. but how do you shut that off, ad trains, and make everything usable?

Your situation is not quite clear to me.
In Surveyor, the bottom tab that looks a bit like a steam engine driver wheel should be clicked. you will then get a list of rolling stock to make a train with. Apply them to the tracks and try Control F2 to launch the game in Driver.

Hi cbntmn --
The latest version of IndustRail is "IndustRail 1a". See here:
http://forums.auran.com/trainz/showthread.php?t=18339
If you have an earlier version of this route there are just a few more downloads for this latest one. Actually, a significant part of the initial download are the products used by the interactive industries.
BesideTheRiver also uses the same tool kit of assets.
You are using TRS2006? To locate the readme and maps, fire up CMP, find the route and right click on it. Choose "Open in Windows Explorer" (I think that's it - it's been a long time since I used '06) and Windows File Explorer will open at the folder containing the route. Double click the readme and jpg files to view them.
If you search the Screen Shot Forum using "Advanced Search"/"Search by User Name" using philskene as the User you will find details about sessions available for the routes.
Adding rolling stock? In Surveyor click on the rolling stock flyout on the right side of the screen. Scroll down to the item you want to add, click on + and then click on the track. It's all really simple. As stated above, press Crtl-F2 to jump straight to Driver and away you go.
The finer details, including setting start time, weather, sky effects, ... , of the simulation are given ion the documentation.
Good luck,
Phil

Everyone,
thanks for the input. i knew switching from survey to driver was something simple and it was probably right in front of me.
I do seem to not be able to see some of my downloads. Tomorrow ill pay more attention and load only one scenario at a time and see if they come through. Phils seem to be the only ones i can see once they are downloaded.
If you download a scenario does the map automatically come with it or do i find maps that i like first and then look for scenarios that match the maps?
There is so much out there a guy could get lost. Some of the maps that come with the game (yes i do have TRS 06) are pretty good but some are not my taste. Im not much one for in town trolly type stuff or steam. I really like the 60s through the 80s. I also like a mixture of in town switching and rural riding. I did one this evening that came with the game with an amtrak and did real well until the end and i missed one red light and BAM into a sitting oncoming freight. Im not sure if there were any survivors. My 12 year old son thought it was cool. Told me he thinks the game needs more of that to raise its excitment level......(as he goes back to HALO)
Has anybody made an online part to this game where a few players can get together on one map? I would imagine that would be a good time.
Thanks again everyone for your patience and help.

cbntmn,
As my interest in Trainz is building routes and scenarios I seldom download any routes from the DLS.
Awhile back one of our old members (I believe he has left) and I'm embarassed that I don't remember his name, however, he started a website listing content, including routes on the DLS, that were error free, and/or a list of fix-its.
A query to older members, what was his website, his name, and is it still online ?
If it is still available, it might help you find some routes ?

Well i think ive made a little progress over the last 24 hours.
My son and I played around with one of the layouts and were able to get some trains running and give some commands to some engineers for the AI to do some things on its own, that was before dinner.
Then after dinner i decided to give Phils IR 1a a shot and downloaded it (i have downloaded over 1 gig of stuff. its like shopping for free) Im in the middle of one of the scenarios now and running some tubing up to Picton and Lys. My wife comes in the bonus room and i have this huge map taped together and on the wall. It assured her that just like everything else that i do ill go overboard here also.
The map is amazing. im pretty much in awe the hole time. We run my computer on a 36" monitor so the kids like to gather around and take a peak also.
Phil if your around does all of your industry actually work? I mean if my son and i were to take the map and place some of our own stuff on it in one little corner and service some industry does everything actually ship and recieve? I guess waybills are not a concearn, you just use the old imagination there. Ive passed what seems like 100s of industries. Is there an actual map somewhere that shows locations of each and what they do?
Props to you for such a great layout.

You might like to try the Razorback Classic (http://razorbackrailway.com), which is a large Australian route. We also have numerous activities available for it. You will need to have installed SP1 though. For a flavour of the layout, try our free slide show program (http://razorbackrailway.com/forums/index.php?automodule=downloads&showfile=750).

You can join routes together by going( in surveyor ) to the menu on the top right corner and clicking merge routes.

Cabinetman
There is no such thing as ample computer power for Trainz, because it's open ended as soon as a new processor / video card comes out some one builds a new layout with more super detailed scenery / rolling stock items that needs even more power to get reasonable frames per second.
Current thoughts are 2.5 gigs of ram, 2 for Trainz .5 for the operating system. Video card with 700 Mb or more memory, roughly 8800 GT or the new top of the line ATI card. Dual core cpu if only so the operating system can sit on one and Trainz on the other.
If you have the power then move the performance sliders to the right and set you video card up with higher numbers on the AA and AF settings.

Thanks for the referral. I just may download it as it sounds like a great layout. I could not look at the free slide show but i did read up some on the forum.
I do have a couple of questions. Since it does not download via the CM is it that easy to load up? And how do i know if i have SP1 or not? WIll SP1 do any harm? Im running TSR6
Thanks

I could not look at the free slide show
That's worrying. Did you get an error message? We'd greatly appreciate knowing the details of the problem if possible. If that information has evaporated amongst the enormous cloud of knowledge that you've encountered so far with Trainz, don't worry.
Since it does not download via the CMP is it that easy to load up?
Well, we like to think it's far easier than CMP but we're biased :)
The Getting Started section of our FAQ (http://www.razorbackrailway.com/apps/faq/index.php?action=show&cat=3) tries to explain everything you need to do. If you have any questions post on our forum once you've registered.
And how do I know if I have SP1 or not?
When Trainz starts up, one of the main menu screens will display your copy's build number. In the USA you've probably got 2761 (no SP1) or 3092 (got SP1). If you see any other build number post it here and someone will look it up for you.
WIll SP1 do any harm? I'm running TRS2006
No, no harm at all, but you must install precisely the correct copy of SP1 for your current build number and it must be installed in precisely the correct way. Unfortunately that will involve uninstalling TRS2006 and then reinstalling it, and additional operations are needed if you want to preserve anything you've created or downloaded. A search of this forum and site will lead to full information if needed. Let's hope you've already got SP1.
Sorry for such a long post. Now back to our regular programming.... :)

Hi cbntmn --
IndustRail.
"Phil if your around does all of your industry actually work?"
Yes, I'm around and yes the industries do work (well, mostly to both questions).
The industries do "work" in the sense that they will load and unload products onto freight cars.
You have probably worked out that there are two parts to this - the interactive industry tracks and the interactive freight cars.
Throughout the route the interactive industries are marked with yellow markers. 3 = LARS; 2 = ProtoLARS. You will find that there are quite a few of both. There is a tutorial for configuring these here:
http://www.worldoftrainz.com/Pages/Tutorials_TRS2004/LARS-ProtoLARS-TutTRS.htm
The Download Station has a heap of interactive freight cars. Some that I've found useful include kuids:
86311:188884
124017:5001
46075:15900
124017:5006
86311:999116
86105:15120
LARS generally behaves impeccably, but a word of warning about ProtoLARS. Because of the large number of products it can be prone to crashing. I'd recommend a save after configuring each ProtoLARS industry.
Good luck,
Phil

My current system is a AMD 5200 at 2.25 mhz and 2.5 meg of ram (just added the extra ram yesterday) with a 6800 vid card at 256. It acually runs trains pretty good and the addition of the ram, from only 1 meg, really helped.
Now im thinking about building a new system with a dual core, 3 mhz speed, 4 meg of ram, and a 512 card. I might go up to the 700 plus cards but my goodness they dont give those things away. Also im going to run two monitors on the new system so i may run 2 vid cards or one with the dual monitor output. So i can have maps/directions on one screen and the pay on the other. My current system has a 36" monitor so i would keep that and just ad a 19 or something on the side. We will see if i can get away with that one with the wife.

Questions
When you are in Surveyor mode and switch to driver via control f2 it asks you if you want to save. so you do. Then lets say you drive for a while and want to make some changes and go back to survey mode. How do you make that switch back. When i pull it back up it was at the starting point. I know im doing something wrong but cant quite figure it out.
Also i was messing around with a layout and it had a portal. Well i wanted to send a coal train out of the portal, unload, delay, and then return. Well he went out the portal just fine, never to return with my train or rolling stock. What gives? I set I thought i set everything up with the engineer correctly.
Speaking of which, are the AI engineers kinda stupid sometimes or is it just me not figuring them out yet? Ive had them do some pretty dumb things. I wish they would tell me what the heck is wrong when they cant figure out how to get from point a to point b.

A quick reply to 1 and 3.
1.
You will find the saves you made in Driver in the Driver menu. So if you exit from Driver back into Surveyor, back out one more screen and then go into the Driver screen. You should find your save there.
2.
Yes, they are dumb. IQ is measured in the -ve. Hence the way I've configured the AI traffic on my routes.

Hi Phil,
I'm a fan and I have enjoyed your routes for many years. I had not downloaded any sessions before so I decided to see what I was missing. I must say that doing that was an eye opening experience. The sessions downloaded many pieces of rolling stock that I would have never downloaded myself. Thanks for exposing me to some great creations.
Now for the downside, I run your routes in 2004 and some of the tankers and boxcars that DLH pulled were updated versions for 2006 only. Using TO I was able to identify and grab the older versions and everything is fine. I don't know if you knew of this issue so I thought I would mention it.

Are you interested in running layouts from other continents, Europe, Australia, etc, and are you just interested in diesel, or can we interest you and your family with steam and electric layouts also....:hehe:

The series of activities can be downloaded from our web site. Part 1 is free (Razorback registration required). For parts 2-9 a Razorback subscription is required. You'll also need all our essential files for TRS2006 as listed here (http://www.razorbackrailway.com/apps/faq/index.php?action=artikel&cat=3&id=89&artlang=en). And SP1 for TRS2006 as previously mentioned.
The layout is Razorback Classic. The version that is built-in with TRS2006 needs a large patch applied to make our activities work. Details are in the same FAQ article.
Any problems, questions: ask on our forum (after registering). I'm starting to feel guilty over-posting in this thread.
