I wonder though, If they should be a bit busier underneath? Yours look like they have been stripped down as motorless trailers? They only had water tanks and battery boxs mounted under the floor then. See these Victorian ones, All the exta detail is fuel tanks air resevoirs for braking and two deiesel sets for tractive power.

Rod, yes it is a bit sparse underneath, thats because I had to strip it out due to a poly build up in game when I add the bogies. All sorts of strange things happen. Apart from that, there is really no clear shot of the underside in all the pics that you sent me. I'm not sure where I will go with this, maybe try again and strip the bogies down even more

Pete just a clumsy idea or two.. :hehe:
Because you normally hide the load in the floor and beause the floor is only 10% area of the top.
1/ Could you send the load 100 m below the ground textures (to be safe)
Again when loading it would not really animate, However a cloud of dust would hide an instant appearance, would it not. I belive they filled very quickly in real life anyway.
2/ If the sides were thick board, We could work out the size of 4 sections of the load, and swing them down into the sides as if they were hinged?
3/ if you create a large horisontal box that easily hides the coal load inside and texture the surfaces of the box invisible, I was wondering if the load would be invisible inside the box?
4/ Could we use an Andi06 script that allows you to permanently build the load on top of the model, Even a high one :hehe: And then script the load to go visible or invisible when tripped Zec?
Not expecting any of these to work, however the fact I know nothing about G-Max might allow me to think outside the square
Cheers

I am in no way being rude to anyone, nor was it my intention by saying this, but I think that people should refrain from asking for the release date of an item, and just wait it out until it actually is released. I'm guessing that it can slowly get slightly annoying for a modeler when they are constantly hounded about when a project will be released, or to hurry up and release it.
If things are released, then they are released, otherwise just live in hope that they will be released, whether it be tomorrow or next year.

As the saying goes (Must be by a Scotsman?
Every time something nice is shown to us, the little ones rush in asking for a time span. Nobody ever knows!! Really The greatest artist here has not got a clue when he will finish, because unexpected things happen.
So please stop asking, it is annoying to get post after post of requests for dates. You stop what you are doing and open the site and its another one... oh where was I? yes searching for DERM pictures....
Rod
Ghosty but its irrelevant infomation! Everything you blokes post is intended for release. no?
But things happen and if the object is that important and a long time goes by, you will remember and go back to the thread and ask what happened. However 9 times outof ten creators kill the project themselves.

Why don't they look like this in Trainz ? :(
http://home.exetel.com.au/cws/trainzfilez/38render11.jpg
They do, it just depends on your graphics card settings. I remember someone in the VICTRAINZ forums had some luck with settings, so I had a play around and achieved great success... frame rate takes a kick in the teeth sometimes, but with the right hardware you can make a decent compromise.
I'll see take some screens of my Nvidia settings and hopefully it will be a good starting point, depending on your card model. :)
http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/8157/nvidiag.jpg
These settings aren't for max quality, but a compromise for performance. Note that the card is an MSI 9600GT 512mb.
The only thing I have had no luck with avoiding is the mipmap blur after 10m, it seems to be built into TRS. :(

Peter,
Use 4 planes with each one linked to a dummy and each dummy linked to a main dummy.
Start the animation with the planes all bunched together in the bottom of the hopper and slide them out and up to the top of the hopper over about 100 frames so that it doesn't load too quick.

Matt, google up Yafray and a thing called YaGmax. You can export a scene from Gmax using YaGmax and SLGrab then render it with Yafray. The reflective floor is just a plane textured with a reflective material.

Yep, it's to do with normal maps... In TRS04/06/TC1-3 items with normal maps were not hidden by fog. You'll find the same problem is on Rob's C class diesels, and a number of others... Not much I can do about it without removing the normal map, which adds some 3D details to the model without adding extra polygons :)

Zec, you could create a low res LOD mesh without the normal map applied, at that distance nobody can se the detail anyway...that's how I get around the problem.

Hmmm, never thought of that :o
I'll fix the lowest LOD on the Z van, and get that uploaded. That said, I'm not going to be supporting 04-TC3 anymore (well, TC3 maybe for my steamers, but thats it).
You shouldn't need to rebuild stuff from scratch for 09. Although best results for the normal maps come out when you bake them from a 3D mesh, my locos and rolling stock still use the old NVidia plugin to create the normal map. Quicker, gives a reasonable result... The only thing you would need to do really is rename the materials, and re-export them. And make sure the mesh isn't referencing materials that aren't there :)

None of that makes any sense to me, but if you don't mind, I'll keep giving you a nudge if I find something that's abnormal. :p
Perhaps this doesn't happen in 2009, but I've noticed that passengers in the Z van like to stick their backs through the wall, any easy fix to this?

Yeah, I can fully understand that... Just pointing out that it isn't as bad as some have made out to get an item working in native model. So long as there are no missing textures, no weird material setups, and no errors in the config, and no alpha blending, any item will work fine in TS09 native mode. Looking at your 38 there, it should work perfectly fine in native mode, except maybe the headlight and windows... Oh yes, and the Espec and sound files will be a little iffy, but I spent a weekend running billegulla's A2 class in 09 without any troubles :)
Jamez, the materials stuff was intended for David :)
As for the passengers. The vans are set up for TC3/09 passengers, which are much easier to 'fit'. The old 04-TC2 passengers had all sorts of weird positions, and sizes (aka 'fat australians'), which made it extremely difficult to place them neatly :)

Hi Axe, good to hear from you.
I had a little boy yesterday :)
vtw, davio, is it possible to get your 06 stuff to work in 09 or do you need to do some things on your end? If so that is a bit disappointing for me because the main reason I upgraded from 04 was to use your awesome models but maybe I should have researched some more and gone with one of the other versions.. oh well.. don't take this comment as whining or complaining at you either please. I would just like to know so I don't stuff around for ages with something that isn't going to work.. I don't wanna put any pressure on you because that really isn't fair, and I sure remember what it was like with people complaining :)

Congrats Spoony!
For 09, there are 2 'modes'. Compatibility mode (only one usable till we get a good selection of good performing trees made to 09 standards), which will allow 99% of content to work. Only stuff that fails is scripts, for the most part... I do know the 81's and 48's fail, but haven't really looked at what the error is (generally don't run NSW anyway). That said, they still 'work', just the script side of things doesn't work. For 'Native' mode, you'll find that any content that is shown as 'faulty' in content manager will not work in game. You'll also find that models with alpha blending (gray scale alpha channels) will give some weird effects. Alpha masking (pure black/white alpha channel) is the way to go now.

EDIT
Just worked out how you did those pictures.
You stored two copies of each scene on Victrainz web site. The first a thumbnail was posted directly to the forum post. Then you hyperlinked each thumbnail to the other larger picture. Pretty easy and saves a lot of bandwidth. Cheers

Thumbnails? I do the following: save the image with a name I want. Then resize the image down the 120*90, and save with the letter t on the end of the name. So the images will then be 'j541-shuttles-01.jpg' and 'j541-shuttles-01t.jpg'. I then upload them to my website, and then wrap the links in tags like so: http://zecrail.victrainz.com.au/healesville/j541-shuttles-01t.jpg (http://zecrail.victrainz.com.au/healesville/j541-shuttles-01.jpg).

Script changes will be for the better, as the changes made within the game are there to prevent conflicts of various scripts :)

Thanks Zec, I've just been in 09 and of the built in stuff, I only had trouble with the candy 81.
Unfortunately the script is encrypted so i can't debug it but the Freightcorp 81 script is suppose to be identical and it works.
Anyway I copied the 81loco_fc.gs from the freightcorp 81 and renamed it 81loco_cd.gs and replaced the 81loco_cd.gse with it and it all works.
Apart from the icon0 and texture warnings.
They seem to work in native mode too.

Depends on how well you want them to run in 09... If you want then to run properly, they need a completely different enginespec and enginesound. That said, the enginesounds in 09 are much better, and the smoke effects can be made to do heaps more ('operating' cylinder drains via the keyboard, a much better 'chimney' smoke animation, and a couple of other bits and bobs).
If you don't mind having a constant whine in the sound, and the Espec behaving strangely in cab mode (and being really sluggish in DCC/AI mode), then the 04+ versions will work. I ran Billegulla's A2 class and J class at the Healesville exhibition many times over the weekend without any trouble :)

I think it has to do with the 81 script being 'broken'. This then 'breaks' any script that is inherited (?) by the broken script.
As for the signals. This is a fairly wide spread problem. It's to do with the signal attempting to do things that signals shouldn't be able to do (setting a speed limit IIRC) in Trainz. There were attempts to find a 'mid ground' if I remember right, but the problem was that they would conflict with too many scripts in Trainz, and be too easy to cause crashes. You'll find that many of the European signals have the same problem.
Zec
Edit: David, you really need to find some better smoke textures for that 38 :( They look too much like the standard Trainz ones. I would suggest using LieLestoSbrat's smoke set. Look really nice IMO :) Also, if you name the cylinder drain smoke effect attachments (if you have any) 'a.drain0' 'a.drain1' etc, they should be able to be turned on/off in TC3/09 (plus you can set the max speed for them for 04-TC2, so they aren't on all the time).

Yeah, that's why they're not ready yet.
I'm afraid I'm not "steam literate" :(
I was about to attempt a twinkles set for the 38 but I'll have a look at your suggestion first :D
Thanks
David

If you want to David, you can use the smoke set from my VR K class locomotive. It has a couple of modified effects in there, all based off LieLestoSbrat's smoke set.
As a side note, if your interested, I would be more than happy to help you out with anything :) All I would ask in return is for some suggestions on my NSWGR steamer (will get back to that once I get this Healesville project outta the way :) ). Or more, someone to 'rivet count' it :P

Re: Nat's signals - I can't get the 2asp diverge signals to work properly (they show double reds when the line is clear. They then show the diverge properly (sometimes) but continue to show diverge when the line is clear. 3asp diverge signals seem to work OKAY.
Anyway, took a test train down from Wattle Creek to Wadalbavale to see how Matt's new hoppers were going (they are bloody outstanding, BTW):
Junction from the mainline to the branch
Cruising downgrade into Karrah Bay
Shunting Karrah Bay
After arriving at Wadalbavale, the 81 Class was sent to the loco, while the 48's shunted the remaining container flats and grain hoppers.
I LOVE 48 Class most of all

Doing some resignalling on the Wadalbavale Line to try and make it work in '09. Some 3ASP divergence signals still show double reds even when the line should be clear/diverged, but other times they work perfectly.

Ok. See that little red dot down the bottom? That tells you there is a non fatal error (generally a script error). Unfortunately, you will need to replace the faulty signals the long way. Delete the whole lot from the layout, save the layout, then re-place them on the layout. As I said, a broken script seems to brake all related scripts. In this case, the broken diverging scripts are breaking all signal scripts, including the base built-in signal script (thus all signals on the layout are working incorrectly).

Hi Jamez,
I use FSX mostly, although my PC is an old P4 3.2, so it struggles with that. Still able to do bush flying though ;)
I only recently installed Fs9 again, but after using FSX I find it hard to go back. :)
I don't have the PMDG 747 for FS9 or FSX I think I'll wait to my PC upgrade.
Apart from having a baby 8 months ago, I have been flying in FSX, which is 2 of the reasons I have not been at the Trainz forms much recently.
Hopefully in July, I'll pic up a new PC. Hopefully a i7 965. ....but maybe I am dreaming :)

Pete its the basic shape of the hopper is the problem
you could never empty it properly
my suggestion is ..like I said a couple of pages back
as the load anim rises from the lowest point possible without sticking outside the wagon start some sliding planes comming out keyed in sinc with the upward anim............thus the load expands .... I suggest 100 frames and a lot of Mucking around but possible but never empty unless the anim jump from below "" to lowest level is quick and masked by lots of DUST!..........

Zec - I tried removing ALL signals from the map (including location signs, buffer stops, etc) and replacing them having exited surveyor and gone back into it, but to no avail. Are there any other (even if they are non-NSW) signals I can use in the interim?
Only thing I can think of would be to delete the whole lot, make a new map, merge the existing map into it, delete the blank baseboard, then save. Now go back in, and replace all signals with something else (save using a different name, so you still have the blank map).
Other than that, I'm running out of ideas :(

Zec, Thankyou so much for all your help so far! I'll give this a try tonight, otherwise I'll just continue using 06 - none of the NSW stuff I use requires 09 (yet), so not an issue either way. I certainly notice performance issues with 09, despite having a high-end Pc.
Thanks again for all your help mate :D

Doing some resignalling on the Wadalbavale Line to try and make it work in '09. Some 3ASP divergence signals still show double reds even when the line should be clear/diverged, but other times they work perfectly.
Trent can you tell me the location of a signal you see this behavior on in the wadalbavale route?
I've tested the 3aspleft diverge in 09 and it seems to work ok except for setting the diverge speed. However I have noticed that AI takes a little while to set the path beyond the signal ie. switching junctions.
I remember Nat saying that the repeater was broken but the others were ok.

Actually, the specific problem I was having with the 3asp diverge signal was related to a "landmark signal" down the line (not the semaphore version, just the normal triangle on a pole). The "landmark signal" was saying "line ahead is clear" yet trains would refuse to pass it. As a result, the 3asp diverge at the junction from the mainline was showing "line clear ahead for one section".
This is something I've found having ripped all the signals out and replaced them - I'll do some more testing in the un-altered version of the route and tell you the signal numbers and locations of all the troublemakers (and then pass them at stop... hehehe).
Thanks for your interest David, both you and Zec are fantastic :).

the 12 class was an express passenger engine introduced to the NSWGR as the C class in the mid 1870's. Quickly superceeded by larger, more powerful locomotives they found themselves usefully employed as light passenger engines on the rapidly growing country and branchline network, a role they continued in dwindling numbers until the late 1950's. 3 have survived: 1210 as the engine that hauled the first train into the nations' capital and is basically operational, 1243 and 1219.
A number were also converted to tank engines during the 1890's early 1900's to suplement the strained suburban fleet. 3 of these have also survived: 1301/1307 & 1308

It's early Monday morning, and after a couple of days of hard work, the newly rebuilt A2 class was sent on a test run from the ZR workshops to Dhura Oon and return, with T377 on the rear to bring the train back to the workshops...
http://zecrail.victrainz.com.au/stuff/images/A2-first-test-run-01t.jpg (http://zecrail.victrainz.com.au/stuff/images/A2-first-test-run-01.jpg)
The A2 sits outside the workshops, with a number of current projects sitting in the shops behind it...
http://zecrail.victrainz.com.au/stuff/images/A2-first-test-run-02t.jpg (http://zecrail.victrainz.com.au/stuff/images/A2-first-test-run-02.jpg)
Having backed onto the train, the A2 sits ready for departure.
http://zecrail.victrainz.com.au/stuff/images/A2-first-test-run-03t.jpg (http://zecrail.victrainz.com.au/stuff/images/A2-first-test-run-03.jpg)
With train in tow, the A2 runs out of the workshops on the dual gauge, onto the branchline that ZecRail is currently rebuilding for test trains.
http://zecrail.victrainz.com.au/stuff/images/A2-first-test-run-04t.jpg (http://zecrail.victrainz.com.au/stuff/images/A2-first-test-run-04.jpg)
The train blasts through the junction platform on it's way to Dhura Oon.
http://zecrail.victrainz.com.au/stuff/images/A2-first-test-run-05t.jpg (http://zecrail.victrainz.com.au/stuff/images/A2-first-test-run-05.jpg)
Caught by a 15MPH speed restriction over the Merebin River bridge, the A2 crawls toward Dhura Oon.
http://zecrail.victrainz.com.au/stuff/images/A2-first-test-run-06t.jpg (http://zecrail.victrainz.com.au/stuff/images/A2-first-test-run-06.jpg)
Now at Dhura Oon, A2 brings the train to a stop in the yard. In only a few minutes T377 will haul the train back to the ZR workshops, due to the lack of turning facilities at Dhura Oon, and the turntable at Merebin being booked out.
http://zecrail.victrainz.com.au/stuff/images/A2-first-test-run-07t.jpg (http://zecrail.victrainz.com.au/stuff/images/A2-first-test-run-07.jpg)
Thanks to a friendly signalman at Dhura Oon, I was able to take this photo from the signal box of the train departing on it's way back to the ZR workshops.
Thankfully the test went well, although a number of problems were found, these will be relatively easy to rectify.

I dont know how "heavy" it is, other than it looks so. It also appears to hit my frame rates, but not positive because I tested several things on the same run. But it may generate some information from the gurus out there :D
However to become Australia's version of DM Drake you will need to be very polly wise, I think. You should look at some of his shopping or country scenes and wonder how he gets a great look with so little resources tied up. "Never the less" thats another fine item I will certainly want to use

Very nice indeed - I can see those coming in very handy!
Just to add to comtrain's point though, it's not just the polys that can cause a performance hit, it's the size, number and format of the textures that will make a difference too. It looks like yours are pretty hi-res - see if you can easily tell the difference with half size textures...

The one in the screenshot is the 04 version. But it's an MSTS to Trainz conversion, so isn't really optimised for Trainz. And is a bit out of scale.
The new version requires a number of 09 features (proper normals map support, new lod system, proper normals map support, oh and did I mention the normals map support? :P ). So yeah, the new ones have to be 09 only. I wouldn't be able to make the look right otherwise.

Yeah I went into my storage there and 60% are removed. They must have storage problems or perhaps if a thread is not opened in a set time it is removed? I dont think they are worth using these days :(

I've been using photobucket myself recently for this very reason - ease of use and security of uploads. I've got screenies from when 04 first came out I didn't know I had!

Went down to the workshops today, to see what was happening. Was pleased to find A2 977 in steam and, of all things, shunting the coal stage...

Thanks Rod,

Looks great, Zec. Can I make a suggestion? Clone the VR trestle bridge pieces and retexture them to match the coal stage? I'm sure you could get permission for such a minor touch up. :)

Actually, the containers used on the PN garbo train are 40ft tectainers - they look quite different to a "normal" container. The container Tom has made above is a 20ft "bulk" container, used for moving (among other things) flour, grain and other bulk goods.
Tom - they look bloody fantastic mate. Was wondering if you were considering a Patricks version (only one opening on the top instead of three), and/or a Humburg Sud version? They will be a perfect partner to Davids 22 Class and Matts MGFH's. Now we're only missing MHGX and MQRF wagons!

March 20th, 2009, 05:56 PM
I'll do the Patricks skin with the single hatch next then, but for the Hamburg Sud version I can't remember what they look like :p Once I get the containers finished I'll work on some NR/PN steel coil containers as well as the container flat to go with them (although I think Davido has already made the wagon...). I've also promised David (another David :p) that I would make a bucket that carries steel in WA (I think) for him.

Great shots dredman!! :D
However I think I have been listening to Jerka :D
Those wooden trestles would not take the weight of that loco
We need a bridge builder to explain the distribution points, but I can tell you that you would need a 24" reinforced steel girder to hold the weight over such long spans.
They would normally put supports every few meters(yards) up to the clearance point for underneath traffic. Then put a heavy duty iron beam to span the wider gap. In wood they would create a heavy duty lattice type span to reinforce the track bearers.
Not directed just at you, but we all tend to make the same mistake
Cheers

the 1300 class only tipped the scales at 78t, yes they were used on heavy coal haulage they also in the early days took turns in the suburban area. the last timber trestle was retired only a few years ago in the suburban area.the Australia Day flood of 1974 saw coal needed to be railed to the swanbank powerhouse near bundamba, these coal trains were hauled by a variety of locos but i have a picture in a book here showing a 1300 class leading a coal train to swanbank. at that stage they would have had to have negotiated several timber bridges on the mainline and the swanbank line.

The crew of 9032 as yet another train passes them by, wonder when the mechanic will arrive. They had the mis-fortune of breaking down just on the other side of the tunnel, luckily the bankers had stuck around long enough to be able to drag them back through the tunnel back to the passing loop, enabling trains to continue on by and providing at least something of interest to see during their what was to be, long wait.

9032 sits at idle in Briffin loop whilst her two class mates lie dead to the world, the crew investigates their internals on the other side.

Unfortunately I just missed getting the loco's coming out of the tunnel, if it wasn't such a gloomy night with thick cloud cover and fog my car headlight might have just been able to light them up.

Thanks for the compliments:)
Something I have always found lacking with screenshots is the fact it is indeed from a simulator. I always aim to either, include a series of shots which show a journey with the train, or, create a scene which could be related to a real picture.
I then of course edit the pictures heavily for the single scenes, taking a few minutes to many hours.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3651/3372490644_6b760d1e13.jpg
The above image for example is one I have been working on for around 2 hours now, at the moment I'm just struggling to get the road colour right, the aim was to replicate a few photo's I have seen of ARG wheaties at level crossings.
I'll have to get around to creating a half decent ZZR scene oneday and showing off a few QR items!!!:p
Although your doing a very good job of doing so yourself Dreddman, you've certainly got a good talent for the use of grass! I can, no matter how long I try for, NEVER please myself with the looks of the various grass' available, it always to me looks either over-done or not enough...you seem to have pulled it off spectacularly though...
