Both taken at Woroona.
My work on the layout doesn't include any extensions to the layout, only bringing it up to TRS06 'standards' (new trees, industries, new track, new signals, new loco depot at Woroona, portals at each end, and some slight changes to track layouts and so forth).
Zec

HI S301, this route is a work in progress? I ask to you, because from the screen it is much beautiful :udrool: :) one and I would want to know where it is possible to always unload it (if it is not a work in progress).

This would be interesting to play with. I live on th Sunshine Coast, near Nambour, and I have been thinking about creating the line between Caboulture and Gympie.

So eventually we may get enough layouts together to make the 1800 (odd) km journey from Brisbane to Cairns. :D

G'day James,

My opinion only, but once I forked out the $$ and got into Rail Driver, I never looked back. I've seen a lot of other support posts for Rail Driver in the previous version of the Forum we once had.

Can't say I've seen too many bad posts about it.

Awesome. Thanks for that. :)

On another note, I've just uploaded (or tried to - it's very confusing) a module of a layout I'm working on, and I would like some of you to download it and tell me what you think. I'd particularly like some advice on the signaling. I've tried my best to make it prototypical, but some of the Shunting signals confuse me.

It should (hopefully) be up in a few days.

Hi JAMEZ001,

give 'Tarana to Oberon TRS' a run. (search 'Magicentro')

It's a branch line based on the now closed (but being restored) prototype in NSW and is largely speed limited to 40 Kph.

The route has some of the steepest grades in NSW at 1:25 and curves as tight as 5 chains.

Take a chain of 6 or so of David T's 'S' trucks and 'ICV' Wagons up the grade with a small steamer in 'cab mode' and you'll see why over 5000 Trainz users have enjoyed this route.

The route was made for TRS2004 (works in TRS2006 just fine) and only contains legacy content so there'll be no asset searching for you:)

Steve.

Anthony, in regards to your 47 class, you may find that an Indian Red or "Tuscan" 47 will fit in much better with your overall theme. The candy livery didn't really come into play until the end of 1982/3, and steam was long vanquished by then.

Yes, I thought it was that simple too. However, this only happens when I add another AD60 water tank on the layout.

I'f I run a single AD60 I don't get this problem. And it doesn't turn white straight away.

Hi JAMEZ001

This Problem is caused by the necessary texture not being included in the relaevant "Body" file for the water tank.

If in 2004, trainz goes lookling for it in the boiler part of the engine and finds copy. -------- Wastes RAM too do this.

In 2006, Trainz does not bother and just tells you too go fix it in CMP.

If you open the body file for the tender tank, you should find a "unmatched" texture.txt reference too a .tga file. Sorry I can't remember which one it is. Find the name of the .tga file.

Go too the boiler body, and you will find that file there. Copy and paste this file too the tender tank body file.

BTW I have Peter's permission too update this engine and correct these problems, but I have so much on my plate that they have not been dealt with yet.

Raichase is correct, if you post in the support section with this type of problem, you will get an answer quite quickly.

----

Hears a little project of my own. 'Wadalbavale' Main Line extension to 'Highland Valley 2004'.

http://img406.imageshack.us/img406/6920/screen027hz3.png (http://imageshack.us)

http://img264.imageshack.us/img264/7795/screen026gm7.png (http://imageshack.us)

Above is where the 'South Loop' at Wattle Creek used to be. Now it is 'Border Loop', a single line climb down the cliff face at an average of 0.94% grade which lasts just over 4500m. The steepest grade on the new extension is 1.24% which lasts for approx 50m at the start of the climb out of the 'Highland Valley' Main Line.

I tested twin 44 Class loco's with 360tonnes in tow for the full length of the climb, in cab mode. Not once did it need sand and managed to easy hold 50kph at half throttle. However bank-loco's may be needed for longer heavier trains.

The North Loop is planned to extend into a 5 block long fiddle yard with twenty-five 3km long storage loops and two 120ft turntables. The Northern Loop fiddle yard will enter Highland Valley at the Afton Mine Forestry, which will be extended to double line track to Stormont.

Note: All Highland stations are being renamed to Australian sounding names, or replacing their current names with an Aboriginal interpretation (where possible, eg. Highland Valley = Wolok Gunyjan).

Just a follow up on my 'High-bavale' extension.

I've just tested a 6000tonne coal train with a pair of 90's and an 82. It ran brilliantly both up and down the loop. You only need 50% train brake and first notch application with the throttle at 0 to keep speed under control while descending. It is also possible to pull the train to a dead stop on the grade from 60kph in 2km. Because of this I am considering placing Repeater Signals at the top of the 'Down' loop.

Been fiddling around with a layout, forgotten the name sorry. Been converting it for screenshots of BG trains, and for iportal usage. Have done half the BG yard, and most of the loco depot. An interesting feature of the loco depot is that the turntable sets on the edge of a river, and the line runs right up to the edge ( river is east-west, track north-south). This is the result of loco R727 over running the end...

I'm not Nat, but perhaps I can help?

Judging from the bogies, that seems to be quite an old model, and I would suspect is superceded by the "SFS Trial" car we have avaliavle now. I remember when it was made avaliable that it was sort of a "public test", until the rest of the set including power van were made avaliable.

I assumed that the "Countrylink" and original "Indian Red" liveries would be made avaliable as seperate models when the final set of coaches was completed.

However, the SFS Trial Car was released a while ago, and that screenshot definatly predates it, so I could be way off the mark.

Even if I am not, I too am very interested in those cars, as I have long wanted to play with them for that brief reprive that loco-hauled passenger trains had!

Davido, is that a 422 class I spy (with my curious eye)? Looks nice :D. I also like the hoppers, we've long needed some decent SRA-era grain hoppers!

I actually went down to Unanderra to try and snap the morning flour train, usually hauled by one of more ex-422 class locos, but it had shown up over an hour early and had already buggered off...

Would be nice to recreate it in my routes, and arrive on time, so as to let the gunzels get all the photos they want :D.

Interesting that you say that Rai. Lately I've been working on a merge of Nat's routes Wadalbavale line and Branchline 2C. The North and South ends have been joined with a large station between them, named Murray, which features a 120' turntable, large loco facilities and 3 portals disguised in long carriage sheds. The yard loops are the longest on the layout so you can fit any train in them to rest. Also featured are goods sidings which have been cleverly fitted with distance markers for the loop sizes at each station to help you build your consist to the max possible size for your session.

I haven't incorporated my usual attention to scenery detail (ie grasses etc) because I'd like to keep the layout looking as smooth and flowing as Nat's style allows.

The idea behind the layout was to get wheat/grain/flour trains from the large terminus station at 2C down the hills to Wadalbavale, much like the prototype Manildra run to Bomaderry/Nowra.

Having the Main Line a large constant running circle also allows lots of traffic to endure as you make your way to and from each branch.

I'll post some pics of progress soon. Hopefully when completed Nat will give my permission to upload it. :)

Sounds really good, JAMEZ001. I too am working on a project similar in intent, but different in desgin. Mine is a short, very rural branch line in the corner of the world, set in the mid to late 1980's, and features a fictional cross country mainline between Sydney and Adelade. Being close to the Victorian Border, I also plan on having a long branch (ie, a portal) into Victoria, with a V/line connection station.

However, thats all miles away, currently, it's a small branch with a couple of towns (in the tradition of pioneer branches, one is merely a platform with a shack to serve 3 houses and a corner store, with a single loop siding for one wagon to be loaded/unloaded). There will be a couple of branches, with the mainline being controlled by portals and the AI running the odd 81 Class-hauled express container service, and the odd coal train perhaps by older rolling stock.

The grain hoppers would be excellent, as I have a grain unloaded and a flour mill, so the 48's would benefit from some nice things to haul around. The ex-422 (or "22 Class" as I think they are under ARG) would be nice to run in the more modern version of the layout.

Also, a thought occours. I imagine Davido is planning a SRA Indian Red/Reverse/Candy version of the 422/22, but I wonder if he is planning a 442s class also? I've snapped at least one of those choking the sky with smog on the main north before, and they look alright in Silverton livery.

...but I wonder if he is planning a 442s class also? I've snapped at least one of those choking the sky with smog on the main north before, and they look alright in Silverton livery.

Probably the class that has had the most amount of different liveries. :hehe: And now they're chopping them up into RL's (I think).

Anyway, here's some screens of the progress on Wad-2C.

Ex-South Loops, now a 60kph cutting and over the river into some farm land.

Junee's roundhouse was 120', specifically for turning garratts (IIRC). The same reason I placed it on my layout.

The idea behind Murray being so complex is so to use it as a sorting yard. So it needs the facilities to handle the largest possible combinations.

Is there an easier way?

I start with the baseboard texture, then add the main colours of cliffs, fields, beaches, rail-yards etc.

Then I choose a collection of textures to overlap the base textures, at least 3. If the base colour is bright make sure your overlap textures progressively get darker, and visa-versa. Make sure you always lay them in the same order to keep the constancy.

The only other thing I can suggest is to practice fast tapping on your mouse button to get a smooth join between textures.

Separate post because of the seperate subject matter (ie, actually posting screenshots):

Done some more work today on my layout, mostly at "Langtree" Station, the station closest to the junction of the branch to "Wylar". Further south is another branch line (not to be modelled), and freight trains from Wylar will come here to pick up the wagons from that branch, before continuing on again north, and then on to Sydney eventually.

I took some screenshots while testing a couple of things. I've only done the texturing for the area around the town - the section between here and the junction of the branch is still not done, nor is the foilage, highways, etc. Pretty much only done the track and signalling.

Shots taken about 6am, game time.

4811 stands ready with 47xx to haul the train north, towards Sydney. At the next station ("Bunta", yet to be built), it will likely pick up some more branch line freight, before heading north east to the junction with the Main South Line, before continuing on to Junee or Goulburn, where the locos will likely be replaced by larger motive power, their train combined with other pickup goods.

Davido/Natvander, if you don't mind, what layout are you using for your sample screenies?

Is it the one Nat was working on for quite a while (the far west line, I can't remember much more but he was working on custom items for the layout, such as stations and signals), or is it a new layout?

I'm just interested, as Davido made a comment a little bit ago saying how good the layouts made his locos look, and he's right - the Wadalbavale Line really highlights the quality of the rolling stock, and it's a similar style I've been using on my layout, to try and emulate the same effects (ie, while it doesn't look like real life, being a 3d graphics game, it still looks realistic and pleasing).

Thanks guys, and keep sharing the screenies. May not be as good as mine (see, I'm modest :hehe:), but keep up the good work.

Thanks Davido. As good as your models are, and Nat's routes are, it's funny that I'm not brain-burstingly eager to get my paws on them - anticipation is half the joy (although, not when I was younger!). It DOES inspire me to work on my own projects - every screenie posted, I want to emulate a screenie of that same quality.

As to flathog's comments, we need to find out how much they get paid an hour, and how many hours a day they work their current jobs. Then we need to pool our money, and pay them enough so that they can take a week or so off work :hehe:.

And my guess is a config.txt or TRS error, not the mesh.
Zec

JAMEZ001

Yep, it would be something as simple as loads sharing an ID.

The main reason that I can think of is that the BSV and BCW have the same load ID when it comes to the 'share load' option, and probably defaults to this when loading.

Davido: did you share the initial config file from the BCW?

I know that. If I had a beta copy, I would take a look at the config.txt, then if I don't find anything wrong, I would then ask about possibly getting the source files to check the mesh.

Well, not tonight, as it's pub night :P.

In all reality, I'm getting close. I've still got the bit between the junctions south fork and the town of Burri Burri to texture, landscape and place tree/houses/roads on.

I'd also like to do some of the mainline back north towards Sydney, bringing it back to single track with a larger town further north, as well as a proper yard, and a place to terminate the branch passenger (if it was to go along the south fork at terminate at Langtree, it would have to run around using the up main, before heading back out, which would be a bit messy).

I'm thinking something like what "wattle creek" is on the Wadalbavale Line.

The idea being that freights run off the south fork, into Langtree, pick up the other branch line freight, plus the freight from Langtree, and then head back towards Sydney along the mainline. Passenger trains (401/402 hauled) would head off the branch along the north fork to the distant town of "Bunta" where it would terminate, probably meeting one of the mail trains from Sydney. It would then run into a siding to run around it's trailer before heading back.

Continuing the mainline would also give me a chance to have some interesting mainline traffic from the era be shown off, although the basic layout could be done without all this work.

I'm trying to set up a "sample" session which would also be offered, much like the Wadalbavale Layout comes with too, but that would involve learning more about triggers and whatnot, which I'm eager to do. Ideally I'd like to have the mainline fully scripted for each session, so that you're not sitting at a red signal for hours on end...

Thanks for the kind words flathog :)

flathog
July 25th, 2007, 04:15 AM
Well if you want me to make-up a session feel free to ask.:p

I am not 100% with everything either but I'm pretty good with getting trains to do things as you approach etc... That way when you stop at a station to pick up passengers you might see the XPT fly past or a 73 doing some shunting or an engine arrive in the dock platform so you have the clear road...

I suppose the idea of Rollingstock splines are for people with slower computers?

I just throw in about 50 consists with my layouts and tell them to switch locos every now and again, or push half of the consist into a siding and pick it up on the way back.

Most of the time they can do it really well. Wadalbavale Line seems the easiest to get them to conform. I've only ever had one problem there, and it was just because Nat forgot to set one of the Diverge signals at Wattle Creek in the 'Base' session setup.

It does help those with slower computers, but that's not the idea, for me, having them in one's layouts ... for example, imagine this:

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t40/ish6/4bc51.jpg

Yes, it's possible to have this scene with these splines. However, if you use real rolling stocks it will definitely choke anyone's PC because of the poly's and detail and moving parts of the rolling stocks ... Or mix and match, with real rolling stocks just to expand one's imagination ...

So the benefits of having the rolling stock splines are that one can have plenty in yards and sidings, without hitting the frame rate.:)

The Daily Xplorer drops of passengers and goes to loco to get re-fueled and service then proceeds to the dock platform to stable till its time to depart for Waroona and beyond.

The line is also restricted to one coal train beyond Cowarie at a time due to the limited size of loops.

I take my inspiration from diagrams in NSW Rail History Magazine (eg the recent Hillston-Roto articles saw me editing all my yards into that kind of style), as well as the style used on the Wadalbavale Route. Your yard seems in a similar location to that at Wadalbavale (ie yard opposite the main line to the loco depot), so perhaps some inspiration can be sought there?

Otherwise, it seems a long way to get between the loco shed and the turntable and the carriage sheds - perhaps compacing them, or using kickback sidings might be more prototypical?

If you can't track down the Hillston - Roto articles, I'd be happy to scan the track diagrams and e-mail them to you.

Ah, but what happens when 3801 pops in for a visit?

Finished (?) the branch section, so been running some test trains to make sure I can shunt the right wagons in the right yards (mostly 1 or 2 wagons per yard).

The branch itself is about 15km as the crow flies, compared to the Wadalbavale one which is about 30km. I plan on having a good section of mainline too, so I'd say I'm about 3/4 of the way there...

See, thats an excellent idea. I think we have too few decent sessions to go with decent layouts. A friend of mine who doesn't post or read these forums, plays Trainz, but hates downloading layouts as he has to put his own stock down and organise everything, usually when he's unfamiliar of how it's supposed to work.

Simple sessions or even complex ones, even just with some stock and a single goal are a good idea to offer for download.

So I usually make my sessions so that as you drive into a station a 73 might be shunting or a train passes or better yet, a train arrives stops shunts then departs:eek:

Well, to put a specific example forward, I'm altering my plans. I'd like to have (say) railmotor 402 roll forward, and have TRS lock the points to send it onto the south fork of the junction (and thus, into town, rather than off towards the portals). I'd also like it to lock the catch points (thus keeping the signal red), to stop it moving onto the mainline until a mainline passenger train goes past.

If that makes any sense?

Really, just simple things so I can organise it so that trains pass the users train without fouling the whole system up.

I don't suppose you know of any tutorials or references on the internet? I've googled, but not found anything.

Ok, without looking in game...

You need the RM to drive to a trackmark then you need to set WaitForTrigger driver command and set it so the RM waits for the trigger to be run over by which ever engine is hauling the pass...

Using this same trigger I'll try and find a rule that will change the points so your RM can then continue driving without needing any of the point to be changed except then when the RM runs over the trigger the points reverse again and you can go towards the station....

That it what I understand you want????

I thought that Pacific National still owned all of the 81 Class fleet, including those that were leased to National Rail (which obviously they got back).

I have seen Silverton 80s class leased out for grain trains, don't know if it's with ARG though.

Pete, awesome looking wagon, as expected.

Ghostryder, love the details there. When I'm playing on a route, and get stopped at a red signal or something, details like that make you feel like you're playing a proper route, and not just a map on some game.

Flathog! Mate, you're such a great help. I've got my junction and mainline set up to run near flawlessly for this specific session I'm working on.

Essentially, the player controls a railmotor (in this case, 401) with a trailer. They run the branch line, stopping at stations to pick up passengers, before getting to the junction. Triggers lock the points to send the train onto the south fork (and thus, into town).

Triggers also lock the catch points (and thus, the signal to the mainline) closed. The players train idles for a while...

http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/32/screen058id6.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

(Those junctions are all locked, and can't be changed by the player, mostly to stop them causing an accident).

The player waits.

http://img528.imageshack.us/img528/6127/screen059mt8.jpg

Until 44202 storms by with a couple of 48's, hauling a long rake of coal hoppers bound for the Sydney area (likely Port Kembla).

http://img528.imageshack.us/img528/6341/screen063vl1.jpg

The player then sets off again, arriving at Langtree, and unloading passengers for the south-bound train that evening, from Sydney. The player then guides their train into the Railmotor Loop (well, unless they want to sit in the platform and watch everything go to hell in a handbasket)

http://img529.imageshack.us/img529/9181/screen065lt5.jpg

The train from Sydney is a Silver City Comet set, hauled by 103, all in Indian Red. The train arrives at Langtree just past 6pm and unloads, before setting off again.

http://img529.imageshack.us/img529/1298/screen066nq9.jpg

Passing the players train waiting in the loop.

While you're watching the SCC pass, the junction in front of the player train, which was previously locked to send your train into the overgrown siding ahead, has been changed by the guard to allow you to move back onto the down main.

http://img529.imageshack.us/img529/1024/screen067wn1.jpg

The player then gains limited control to the junctions around the loop, and they must run around their trailer car to position the railmotor back at the Sydney end of the consist. The catch points, as well as the junctions into the loop are all unlocked at this stage.

http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/2982/screen068oc7.jpg

With the coal train long gone by now (it better be, it was running late!), don't be surprised if you're passed by some of the traffic that has been stuck behind it, specifically this 48 class hauling empty fuel tankers back to Sydney.

After the player runs around their train, they move back into the station to collect the rest of the passengers from Sydney. By this time, the 48 that just passed has cleared the line ahead and hit a trigger to set the junctions to let you back onto the up main, which the player moves their train onto, and up to the junction again. The points are all set to send the train back onto the branch, and it's a short, easy run back to Wylar for the night.

Still got some bugs to work out (mostly spacing the trains and the signals to give the player a clear run, as well as setting some junctions and having a branch line freight pass the player at Burri Burri), but I'm getting there.

Edit: The whole route from start to finish should take about an hour to play? Perhaps less? Still working on the time of day and whatnot.

flathog, the branch line train in my session is player controlled, and all of the other trains are "off screen" to the player on the passenger train.

So that way, you're waiting for a minute or so each time, but they appear out of the countryside, rather than just starting up :).

Pete, those are looking really nice. I especially like some of the load variety they can carry.

Is that 49 (?) Class d/l able yet? I know Colhad has a 49 on the DLS, but I can't remember if it is Indian Red or just Candy...

As to my progress, the whole session plays out to be about an hour. Is that reasonable? The only problem is that the player has to drive the railmotor backwards for the last half, and as a result the headlight doesn't shine the rails, it shines the trailer car... I don't suppose there is a rule I can trigger with the train to swap it's direction? I know I can give AI drivers that order, but not player vehicles...

So far the schedule is as follows:

5:30pm dep: Wylar.
5:35pm arr: Lowell
5:36pm dep: Lowell
5:41pm arr: Burri Burri
5:42pm dep: Burri Burri
5:47pm arr/dep Langtree Junction
5:50pm (5:55) arr: Langtree
5:51pm (5:56) move to LT Railmotor Refuge
5:58pm Evening train from Sydney arrives at Langtree.
6:00pm Evening train from Sydney departs, and player runs around consist.
6:04pm arr: Langtree
6:05pm dep: Langtree
6:07pm arr/dep LT Junction
6:12pm arr: Burri Burri.
6:13pm dep: Burri Burri
6:17pm arr: Lowell
6:18pm dep: Lowell
6:23pm arr: Wylar.

I'm pondering how to best end the session. Should I have the train run over a trigger that is a "mission complete" trigger? Because the terminus is a single siding, the train has to reverse out to the loop to run around before going back into the station. Should I make the player do that also?

Any comments would be nice. I'd like to get it wrapped up soonish, as the section between Wylar and Burri Burri is a little out of date (I like it, but I've gotten better), and I'm keen to start on larger projects now that I've got the basics down-pat.

Thanks to you guys for all the help so far. I realise that this won't be a mind blowingly fantastic route (being only a km or so of mainline and a 20km branch), but I hope people enjoy it for a run or two :).

The 49 class started life as Colhad's 49. I was lucky enough to get a copy of his mesh and with his permission I started to make it a high detail model. Unfortunately the journey between 3ds and gmax did something to the original mesh and the only thing left from the old mesh are the handrails on the long hood. I have not done bogies yet and the bogies under it are place holders from the Xclass.

The open wagons will be released with two versions of the NODY, 1 for palletized freight and the other for containers and large bits of steel. The NCBX will take containers or steel loads as will the tubemaker and red versions of the NOBX. I am going to make a pack up with the new steel loads and hopefully get it all to the DLS after the testers have comeback happy, then 2004 players will have some of the stuff the 06 players have

There is also a "speed-i-gas/Boral" NTHF industry interactive coming along, been sitting on these things to long.
