Barry. Approx.1800. Canals, horse drawn canal boats, horse transport, docks.
May continue with my sceneries, similar to what I have on Trainz DS from a few years ago.
These included Liverpoool docks c1830 and Liverpool docks Liverpool and river Mersey
up to ElllesmerePort canal complex c1910, etc, trams in Liverpool and along the dock road, etc.
Horse drawn canal boats and horse drawn wagons.
My horses sufferred from rheumatism as never did learn animation in gamx, although have used Elvenor's fine animated horses.
I now use Blender for content making and since I found out a few days ago I can now export the texture from the blend file into gmax it opens up a few more possibilities. Simply click "face" then click back on UV Map.
Although I did use gmax for the content I made for Trainz years ago my content was fairly basic...except for my gaff rig sailing boats which I quite like.
Would keep to Liverpool and its docks c1800 as before also the Leeds and Liverpool canal and possibly the Shropshire Union Canal from Ellesmere Port.
Would have to keep those locks static (on DS), Keeping mainly to the flat ground for the sceneries otherwise too complex with locks.
Ian (Vulcan) was working on small canal locks, suitable for UK canals, on his site a few years ago but no longer see them on his site.
Would like to include a range of windmills, this time etc so would be a sort of back-up, similar or identical to content I make/will be making for the Stentec Sailing simulator as can use the same blend file PLUS texture for trainz through gmax.
Can't do much for the sailsim at present as waiting on the next version due out within a few months I think, with integrated dem data, etc.
As its a few years ago now ... so forgotten which "invisible" track is visible in driver map as the default Auran track isn't for 2004.
I have TC but on dial up, and Vista, and that appears to lock up if I open the content manager so will keeping to to trs 2004 which runs fine with Vista, etc.
Also I used invisible points, etc. last time so not quite sure where I was up.
If anybody has any relative info. perhaps you could add to this thread.
I can eventually find out all the details but it is will take a while and my main interest will probably be the sailsim I mentioned, although the content I make will be the same for trainz, except for connection points I can add in gmax, and "if" I learn any animation and complexities of the configuration table.
I noticed in the TC tram route, the boats were moving to simulate wave movement, and I remember discussing these matters years ago.
Thanks
Barry

Fine to see you again. I remember the first time I've entered the Trainz-Forum, that was some time before TRS2004, I was very fascinated by the thread, you told of boating in a Train-Simulation. :)

Hi. been a few years now and have been off and on with Trainz during it "changes".
Finding out about exporting the blend file with texture into gmax, enables me to use all my Blender content, so may be a bit more interesting for me regarding canals. etc.
But probably a lot of would be too complex for me with animating loading of barges, etc.
Would need plenty of men with shovels for that for my era of interest though.;)

Hello John, nice to hear from you.
It was only finding out in the last few days that I could carry the texture from Blender, exporting as 3DS into trainz gmax that was the key to it for my interest.
Only needs a few mouse clicks. Open UV map. click "face, then back on UV Map.
No need to open Unwrap UV.
I need Blender to make content for the Stentec Sailing Simulator as vrml2. and obj. for the next version, so should be able to use the same blend files now for gmax as well, already textured as 3ds. Added another short tutorial to my site for 3DS textures form Blender to gmax in addition to 7 Blender tutorials.
www.barrywright.clara.net (http://www.barrywright.clara.net)
Keeping to c1800 as before for the horse drawn narrow-boats and barges, and gaff rig coastal sailing ships.
Will try and sort things out gradually.
Would have to alter attachment points in gmax for my horse drawn barges ,maybe to Elvenors, as my static drivable carthorses are not quite the same.
I think the loads are only a basic mesh with attachment points?
Again no idea about the configurations but can refer to the way others have done it for train wagons.
Should work for horse drawn barges and narrow boats?
The narrow-boats and barges carried all types of goods around the canals of the UK so plenty of scope and would add a new dimension to the maritime scene of a few centuries ago, or during the age of the train as horse-drawn barges used until about 1950 in UK?
Have about 150 Blender blend files, and can use the same content I make for the Stentec sailing simulator in Trainz.
Will email you when I try and sort thing out a bit more, and get back to where I was a few years ago.
Again if you want to use Blender for making a mesh and texture can give help.
Thanks

Hello Barry
Nice to see you back. you mentioned the working locks from Ian, well he did do them and he sent me a copy of them which ive used in my Devon lines route that im working on. im sure if you contact him he will send you a copy, not sure why they are not on the DLS as they are another great piece of work from him. Bendorsey did a working canal swing footbridge but the track is different than that which you use but a work around can be done. Ian also did an added bit to the config files to make his helicopters tilt when on bends or speeded up, might be adaptable for boats rocking about.

Hello and many thanks for all the details.
I made a static wooden swingbridge based on one near I live. At least it used to be as they replaced it with a more modern version.
An animated one would be nice and the animated UK canal locks from Ian.
Have tried Ian's larger locks, etc for big ships ages ago.
Take me a while to get back into the swing of things but at least have a better idea of what is available through this thread.
Have made double static locks for Ellesmere port which was in my last scenery but animated working locks would make all the diffence and could join them in series if needed.
Probably in real life they were single locks c1800 for the 7 ft wide narrowboats and they made a wider channel for the 15 feet wide barges later.
Leeds and Liverpool Canal, near where I live is connected to the river Mersey at Liverpool through a series of 3 or four locks but c1800 ended in a small barge dock and was not joined.
so makes it easier choosing the earlier era.

Hi Guys,
Yes I need to get motivated to finish the canals and locks, there was only a couple of things to do, mainly with night lights on the Falkirk wheel. As you realise, the narrow canals require canal boats etc and a whole interated system is needed for everything to work properly. I was waiting until everything worked.
I did try to upload a couple of other models last night but the Auran upload link was not working, that problem was reported in another post. Perhaps I will have a look this week at the unfinished models. While initially there was no interest in them, I have had a few enquiries lately.
Details of models are here:

Adding visible products is fairly simple. Bulk loads needs an additional mesh but can be added to an existing mesh in the config.txt file. RickyStyles and Shoves have been creating some suitable items time wise including a range of horse drawn items, Bob Sanders has been churning out new people based on Elvenor's and Shoves meshes, Shove has a poseable person GMAx mesh. Andi06 has been very nice and is modifying his invisible stations to accept multiple passenger sets, we're very close to the final version, and I have put together an 1890s passenger set that can be easily have people switched in and out.

Hello Ian been a while since I posted.
Look forward to seeing your items, especially the narrowboat locks when completed. Interested to see if I could include them in my sceneries relevant to say 2 centuries ago with the horse pulled narrow-boats. Have a few on download station made years ago but horse drivable but not animated and barges towable/drivable.
They work OK though pulling narrow boats and 15 ft wide larger barges on UK canal. Connection point about 10 to 20 metres behind horse.
Think I need to catch up on things a bit though.;)

Hello John, looks like I will have a lot of catching up to do and will keep in touch.
Still at the stage of looking at my routes again and seeing what I need to replace like invisible track for boats and horses to make it seen in driver map in 2004, and will do away with the multitude of points/switches I had for the boats.
Maybe put them all on single tracks except where they enter the docks, etc.
Narrow boats in canals would have to be just 2 lanes? and horses branch off at locks and canal bridges, etc.
Will l have to study the details in this thread later to catch up on everything.
Thanks

An outline and update.
Got my last route and my dock and canal content of 150 items back from the DS which took a wee while as on dial up.
This was Liverpool docks and the River Mersey up to Ellesmere Port with horse drawn canal boats and horse drawn wagons. Docks based on plans for 1830 but may redo these as have plans for about 1810 or similar.
Regarding invisIble track luckily I used Mike's (Mike10) single strand of visible track.called invisible track, so visible in Driver Map so can see where the boats are going. trs2004.
Can't use TC editor as cmp locks up on Vista, maybe because it tries to connect on dial up.
I used default invisible track for horse drawn transport so may replace that with single strand visible and cover it slighltly to make visible in driver map.
My last route on DS inlcudes the start of the Leeds and Liverpool and Shropshire Union canals. so they are the 2 canals I will be developing and may include Warrington and Widnes etc for ports for the sailing ships and cargo loading.
There is also the River Weaver that has quite a few locks on it so the river Mersey is a complex of rivers and surrounding canals and every part could be visited in Trainz by horse drawn transport or sailing ship early 1800s.
Horse drawn canal boats only for that era and my gaff rig sailing ships.
No idea how to do much of it. but eventually would like to include cargo loading/unloading, and some form or boat movement to simulate wave movement on static and drivable boats.
All I think well with Trainz capabilities at present except for wave movement for horse drawn narrowboats.
Also possibly horse drawn transport (from mines?), to the the boat quays.
Have considered the other train simulators but for my canal interests Trainz is now OK, as can use all my Blender files that I make for the sailing simulator, exporting as 3DS with textures, although textures seem a bit weak, at least on my Conway castle that I exported with texture to try it.
If anbody using Blender tries it 3DS to gmax, perhaps give their feedback.
Small tutorial on my site re Blender and 3ds, plus Blender tutorials.
www.barrywright.clara.net
Anyway thats an update of my current involvement (for what it's worth).
Only other problem is integrated dem data which I am used to using in the Stentec sailing simulator, srtm2, 3DEM, and dem function, and have made most of the West coast of the UK in sailing sceneries. I know about HOG, etc which I tried years ago but couldn't use, and may have difficulty in downloading, and there other bought alternatives, but I don't use credit cards on line, etc.. so will to keep to the lower canal ground for now, with maybe a few of Ian's locks to get into the Shropshire Union Canal.:)

Thanks for details. (Stagecoach,Mike?)
Have tried Ian's but need to be visible in driver map. Also tried Cyberstorm;s as he made special ones for boats a while ago but they don't seem to load now for some reason in trs2004.
Downloaded the invisible speed signs which I have used in past. 10,15,20 and 25. will do me I think.
My best plan is just the thin single strand of Mike10's visible, as can see it underwater in driver map but non visible when driving, otherwise no idea which direction boats will go in.
Many Thanks

Has anybody exported as 3DS into Trainz asset creation studio from Blender.
I now only texture in Blender and same content I can get the textures back on with a few mouse click..however sometimes I can't.
I just put a sailing flat, deep barge c1800 used on river Weaver and Mersey etc with a sail into my own route.
Have added a post to content creation forum with image as interested in feedback on exporting 3DS from Blender.
http://forums.auran.com/trainz/showthread.php?t=14101&page=3
Export as 3ds- drag 3ds file into gmax asset.c.s.
open texture apply and click globe for mixed up garbled texture.
Open UV Map, click face, click back on UV Map and Blender textures on same as in Blender.
Do not use "Unwrap UVW".

Made a start and learnt how to use Hog and Microdem as couldn't face making routes manually again. Took 5 years (smile).
Hog made the complete Isle of Man, but just testing it, and will start on the river Mersey, rivers, canals and coastline. " c1800.
Need to keep the tga file smaller in Hog say 20 to 25 miles would do unless section is thin then maybe 30 plus.
Made an undersea texture, photo of waves at Liverpool, as don't want to use much default trainz content, and either will make it or will use suitable DS items. Never sure what will get carried forward to the next trainz version now with default content.
So back to the horse drawn canal boats and sailing ships c1800.
c1800 as have plans of liverpool docks for that era.;)
Doubt if I will upload routes again as before, as a non train specialised interest, but may upload occasional items to DS although that would be much later.

Hello Barry, motivation comes and goes, I know.
I have uploaded a few canal models, not sure if you are interested:
http://forums.auran.com/trainz/showthread.php?t=18997
I now use track at ground level (3 metres above water level), it is easy to place and consistent for a number of model types. My coloured track will show in the Minimap.

Hello Ian, nice to chat again.
Yes very interested now, and had a look at your page of canal work in progress.
I have been using Mike10 ordinary single strand of track (to see it in Driver map, not minimap in Surveyor). Using trs2004.
Will have a look at your invisible track again.
Just had a look at the screenshots in the thread link and your lock gates seem spot on to the old UK canal gates and similar to the ones at Ellesmere Port which is part of the area I am interested.
Many Thanks

So far I can now make satellite data based sceneries and can create sailing ships, preferably using Blender, exporting as 3DS with texture to finish in gmax (tutorial on my site).
What I can't do is set up some signalling to keep say 50 to 100 boats on the move.
Period early 19th Century, but will go further back to c1800. My last route on DS was based on dock plans c1830 for Liverpool and stretched up to Ellesmere Port.
The reason for detailing this is even in that period there were miles of docks in Liverpool.
I need to keep things as simple as posible as before I used dozens of Ys a for the sailing ships to berth and go in and out of docks, but manually operating the points and no signals.
I am using a visible single strand of track as invisible track unfortunately can't be seen in driver map (I don't mean Surveor Minimap). I am using an invisible signal but could just as well use a visible one underwater.
Anyway all I need is a loop with parking bays so to speak.
Just a bit of track leaving the main loop and joining back onto it. Tried it with 12 signals on the main loop and about dozen parking bays and 6 sailing ships...but all jambs up eventually. Kept the points on the loop open as only need the bays to manually change the points to berth any boats not running on the loop.
As I can now make quite extensive maps with hog covering many miles, I could have several seperate loops with numerous "parking bays....if the whole lot doesn't jamb up solid.
So any ideas where I need to place the signals to keep the whole system running on one loop. There could be many miles in a single loop, and several seperate loops all independant of each other. Just using one baseboard at present to test though.
I need to keek it as basic and simple as possible..for me to understand it, as a trainz mariner returning to the flatter than flat calm seas of trainz;)

Hello Dave.
I tried esc but that had no effect.
On dial up and on Vista.
Might try the suppress database.
But maybe then could not use Surveyor in it with commit, etc, as tried the 2 routes in it.
Taken TC off, and using Surveyor in trs2004. Too complicated trying to use my earlier content in TC, as used some default items from trs2004 etc in my routes.
Thanks

P.S Just reinstalled it and tried ticking suppress database and it then locked up.
Used Task Manager to close it with "Vista" analysing "problem".
Didn't fill in Planet Auran details as use ftp anyway.
That shouldn't have anything to do with it though as many people arn't online who use TC.
Will leave it off permanent.

Regarding signalling solved that and decided not to use any as tried experimenting and not the solution for a complex maritime route with numerous sailing ships.
Just been having a look at my last routes on download station, maritime early 19th Century, no trains and miles of docks in Liverpool, made a few years back for trs2004 I think.
Where I went wrong with that one, docks need to be a one way system using circles to get around them, straight track to get through the static locks, loops off the straights into other docks, but not out the same way...also no numerous Ys as before except into closed dry or wet docks for repair as boats would be hauled out on windlass so a few ys OK there.
Invisible track is no use as not visible in Driver maps and you can't see the direction boats are travelling so will use visible single strand as not visible through water in driver. I think enough of the river Mersey and coastline is visible with Hog and Microdem except the upper reaches. The river Ribble is a problem as surrounding land very flat. That is if I continue..

I have Trainz Classics also and invisible track is visible in Driver map (forget if visible in Driver map underwater), however don't need it for boats as use single thin strand of ordinary track, invisible in driver but visible in driver map under water.
On land is the problem for horse drawn vehicles unless I cover the the visible strand of track slightly with terrain.
CMP locks up when opened. Vista and on Dial up and know about install as administrator, etc.
Probably tr 2006 will be the same so trs2004 will do .
as unlikely to upload further routes to DS anyway.
I think the life away from the tracks is without trains, at least it was in my last route on DS including Liverpool docks and canals of about 1830, and probably if I make any more will be c1800, age before industrialization. ;)

some of the Ideas I have put forward on these forums hardly even get a post ....so getting feedback on Ideas worth developing is near non existant and Frustrating to say the least when you get people asking for things that are nothing more than a shell of a Idea.....that never went any further......Pencils great Dock is on the DLS..I put the Steam Clipper on the DLS so people could have a interactive ship to use the dock. Theres not much Intrest only 617 downloads or attempts to try the system.
I'm sure half the time people think Oh yeah :o whats dreddman making now nothing to do with Trainz as usual.....
Well how wrong are they .....(The narrow minded Homeviewer)
C1800's....Horse drawn transport canals ports and docks and Railways
now correct me if im wrong here...................Horse drawn transport..The Great Elvenors horses n wagons (updated interactive ones and Cavalry on the DLS)..English style wagons could be created ...Barrys coastal canal maps and boats Vulcan's Docks and Locks.......UK Broad Guage Railways and American Wood Burners?......Our Docks and My Ships to service the Docks for the Railways and wagons to remove.
C1900_1950....(Now I wont mention all the great WW's content out there)
But we have Whecsailors great ships which he is now geting them loadable
for use with the docks. I have driveable 1940's car (a Taxi could load people) and a truck that loads....Ships that load Planes that Load "HOW DO YOU WANT TO TRAVEL IN MY WORLD."
If you have seen the screens of the ships and subs and warships at a Aussie looking Dock with my QR trainz....
Well in WW2 Battle of the Coral Sea the US Fleet was in Queensland serviced by QR Short Sunderland Flying Boats operated out of Gladstone Harbour ......I could go on and on but I dont want to totaly hi jack your thread Barry
It's Annoying that No one has any Imagination these days.
Merry Christmas To ALL who read this..
Hi. I wrote a long reply but it didn't register when sent (maybe luckily).
For those that still know me, my previous posts over the years explained everything and pointless going over things again.
As a retired (in more ways than one) virtual trainz mariner, perhaps one day I will come across a simulator and a suitable environment to expand and portray virtually the wide canvas of life across the decades but mainly centuries.
Perhaps environment in the case of this forum as possibly much of the potential "could" be there. Nice and enigmatic post.

I think it takes some time before people realise that they can actualy mix boats, planes, trains and road transport in a single map and maybe think that the content done is for periods to early for their own routes. I my self use a lot of content created by all you creators for the world of water and a lot will fit very well into modern layouts. Creators of more realistic routes need to have all this wonderful content and i think the low downloads is more to do with the amount of uploaded routes that have this content in it as a lot of downloads come from those routes. In the past interactivity between boats and other transport was very limited and it is only in more recent times that a lot more interactivity has become available. i look foreward to all this new development and would greatly miss it if it was no longer created.
