Eureka! At last I have managed to get a semblance of a route into TC using Roland.s aka geophil excellent Transdem. Actually The problem wasn't completely my own stupidity.The files were corrupted.so I reinstalled,followed Roland.s tutorial to the letter and imported into Trainz.
Not quite perfect Roland ,because I still have no tracks showing although I can see the "joins" going round and round.I shall delete the route and the files and work through your tutorials again.But at last I think my grey hair is reasonably safe now.Next objective is to try to get the tutorial on Google Earth to make some kind of impact on the grey matter.At least I have proved that Trandem can work with Trainz Classics.Well done Roland.
