In a 2 track main line say running north & south which track goes north the left or right line?

Generally, if the track is not signaled for bi-directional working, in the US and most of Europe trains run on the right track.
In Australia and the UK, the left.

This is a new term to this Newbie. "signaled for bi-directional working". How is this accomplished?

Like philskene said, but the Chicago & Northwestern ran left track on their double track.

basically both tracks had signals set up for trains running in both directions.

Thats why I ask this ? Here by me I allways see the LIRR trains running the left track.
