hey all, I bought TRS2006 about 2 months ago after watching my brother-in-law, for many months, use TRS2004 on their computer. It's very additicing, I must say. I do have a few questions though. I'm trying to find some add-on's, and aren't having much luck. Mainly:

-a snowplow, either rotary or "V" (?) style..
-Roadrailer units, or
-Intermodal units..

I've noticed there is a two deck, open auto hauler unit, but I wouldn't mind a TTX unit either.

Help! Russ

jjslll54 has a rotary plow with spinning fan, klinger did a reskin for D&RGW, and narrowgauge has a 2ft 'V' plow on Trainzone.

First off welcome, for the TTX cars you are looking for there are some on the DLS(download station) and search uner autos or something similiar to that I will double check for you.
EDIT: In the DLS type autorack for the search and there you go.

There are some roadrailers here

http://www.virtual-motive-division.com/html/us_rs.html

and search for TTX Flatcars on the download station

well, I searched the download station better this time, and found a couple auto units, especially CN and TTX. Also, I love the roadrailer unit's in that link Larrymoecurly! Now I just need to find a plow and an intermodal unit (there was one in the DLS, but it was a semi trailer on flatcar, not the style I was looking for)

now, I've just got to figure out what folder to save them in...

oh, and will downloads from TRS2004 work in TRS 2006? stupid question, I know...

Hi Parkinglot -- not a stupid question -- there are a number of threads in this forum on using 2004 assets in 2006. In general, yes, 2004 content will work in 2006. However, quite a few 2004 assets are defined as faulty in 2006's CMP, and opening a 2004 route in 2006 often produces a black screen that says assets are missing. The faults are often due to syntactical differences between the two versions, and don't mean much. In my experience you can click on the line of the black screen that says you can load anyway, and it will work.

Folder to save them in? Not sure what you mean here. CMP downloads and installs new assets, like the rolling stock you are talking about, directly from the DLS and into TRS 2006. If you have a download from a 3rd party site, it will probably be in .cdp format or unzipped into several files of that format. Such content can be put in any file, even on another drive. Then it is installed using the CMP file menu - Import CDPs or Import Content File.

If you have not imported anything yet -- a full installation is made only after you have committed an asset. In CMP's menu, File|Settings|Miscellaneous tab shows a radio button for automatic commit. Dotting this button assures that DLS downloads fully install. But it does not work with Import CDPs or Import Content from 3rd parties.

3rd party imports produce a dialog box that lists the imported content. Click on the button at the lower left that says something like View in Main Window. Use a left click in the main window to get a local menu and select Select All - everything highlights. Then left click again to get the same menu and select Edit, then select Commit.

I've also observed that launching Trainz from the CMP will also commit any previously uncommitted assets that may be in your system.

Have fun!

When you click on download at the DLS "down load station" Trainz will open automatically and install to the correct folder. They should auto commit too. But to be sure just click the "open for edit" tab and if there are any asset's on the page click on them and push "ctrl+M" to commit them.
There are some neat intermodal's on third party sites but I can't remember where off the top, I'm sure someone will be along to tell you soon though.

edit: Oops It seems we were typing at the same time. You have to check the auto commit button in settings for that to happen.

If by "intermodal unit" you're referring to doublestack well-cars, there are many of them available at the Trainz Pro Routes "Download Depot" - as well as some flat cars, all of which carry containers.
http://www.trainzproroutes.com/downloads/
(you do have to register, but it's free)

I can't remember all of the road names, but they are about the highest quality stuff you'll find in Trainz, or very close to it:)

Wellllll - be careful. The first time I did this I was downloading a few individual assets and everything worked fine. The second time I was downloading a route, and CMP bombed out after it was opened from the DLS. But, if you did not know what you were looking at among various icons and windows, CMP did not tell you it had bombed. After recovery and asking some questions on a thread, learned I had to open CMP first, then search the DLS using CMP before downloading.

Maybe the start-in-DLS approach is one of these things that works some of the time.

Philskene has a route called Austral Bay in several versions (and several other routes) on the DLS (search on that author ID to see them all). He also has provided a large number of sessions for the route, some of which provide high-quality container well cars, trailers on flat cars, auto carriers, and so on. If you download them, you may have some of what you are looking for and have a nice map besides. The map is a very good one, but one of the dependencies has been removed from the DLS by its author (not Phil). In response to an email message direct to him, Phil will tell you where to find it (actually "them" - the coronas for the semaphore signals that he uses). It'll work without the coronas, but the signals are much enhanced if you have them.

In my earlier post, I forgot to mention that CMP stores all installed (committed) assets in the file TRS2006\Local. Its all coded and not directly readable, but this is the one file that you need to keep backed up if you are installing assets. Or if you are making any assets like routes and sessions because that is where they are stored when you save anything in Surveyor.

PS - maybe somebody can tell me how to get that quote in a window that the preceding posts contained. I used the Quote button, and got the above.

Welcome to Trainz parkinglot, if you want a nice snowplough to download, may I suggest you look for KUID 1094:60 on the DLS, it's a Danish Modern Snow Plough V - style, but I drive it on all of my layouts ( European and American ) and it suits just fine, especially the winter-themed routes.

Cheers. ex-railwayman.

There are a number of interesting animated freight cars in Trainz.

The JSA steel coil wagon is on the Download Station, kuid 92263:16102

The cover opens to load and unload:

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b392/nineercharlie/YSC%201/YSC_SA_05.jpg

The cover closes for transit.

The red out-of-gauge car is also animated.

Normally the load bearing arms are closed, but when loading the arms first move outwards:

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b392/nineercharlie/YSC%201/YSC_SA_11.jpg

The steel plate loads:

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b392/nineercharlie/YSC%201/YSC_SA_12.jpg

The bearers rotate:

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b392/nineercharlie/YSC%201/YSC_SA_13.jpg

And for transit the steel plate is now within gauge:

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b392/nineercharlie/YSC%201/YSC_SA_15.jpg

Again, on the Download Station, kuid 114867:1050

Both of these cars are used in a session of mine for YardSwitchingCo. Look for "YSC 1a SteelAnime", kuid 69871:12057, or this thumbnail:

Yes when you DL a route there are sometimes hundreds of assets on the route that CMP has to locate before it will start to down-load so it will appear that CMP is locked up where it is actually working on locating the assets and compiling them, you just have to walk away for awhile and let it work. DLS speed and your CPU speed all come into play here.

That usually happens when the closing quote is erased. That 'end quote' is required.

" ... do you need a special building to get the steel plates?"

Nope.

It's all done with interactive sections of track.

There are several LARS and ProtoLARS interactive track sections on the Download Station.

Before the "Great Forum Crash of '06" I posted a tutorial on how the whole kit and caboodle works. Fortunately the tutorial has been saved for posterior at:

http://www.worldoftrainz.com/Pages/Tutorials_TRS2004/LARS-ProtoLARS-TutTRS.htm

Good luck,

In case you don't know how to do that. Just click on the Switch Editor Mode Icon in the upper right hand corner of the quote box.

Edit Forget what I said I just tried that and it still put the pictures up, I had do delete the links to keep the pictures from showing.
Maybe Harry will be along soon to tell us how to do it.

Thanks Harry I'll try that next time

Edit: Maybe Harry's post should be made a sticky, since there are a lot of trainzers that double and triple quote pictures wasting a lot of band width and space on threads, because they don't know how to do this.

On the subject of "Roadrail Units" theres a nice Road/Rail engineering work truck called the CSX MOW Crane Truck which looks totally at home on a UK railway. You can drive it on the road by installing Invisible Track of course.Type CSX MOW into the DLS and you"ll find about five varieties but note that only one (the yellow one) is driveable.
