I am a former Train Driver (Locomotive Engineer) and I began my career on British Railways in the late 1970's becoming a Driver (Engineer) some 5 years later. I was considered to be something of a late starter at that time, being in my early 20's, because most people on the footplate in those days joined in their mid teens and were the sons of established railway staff. I somehow just drifted into the job after leaving the army (Royal Engineers), although I've always had a soft spot for trains. I enjoyed my job for 30+ years (in spite of the privatisation of the industry in Britain) before a heart attack and subsequent related health problems made it impossible for me to continue and I took retirement on health grounds in 2008. I have since undergone a successful triple heart bypass and, thankfully, my health has improved sufficiently to allow me to spend many hours with Trainz.
